Below Justin Phillips remembers how different CFL Draft Day was when he was drafted fifth overall in 2007 by the Stampeders, especially with regard to how modern technology has changed the experience today, as well as the memories generated in his nine year CFL career.

One of the major reasons for the Stampeders success has been the depth of their offensive line, which enabled them to win 16 games despite having to use 11 different OL in 2016.

Most CFL teams are in trouble if they lose one starting offensive lineman to injury. If two or three go down, the season is in jeopardy given the importance of the position.
In 2016, the Stampeders deployed 11 different players on their offensive line and proceeded to lead the league in points scored (586) and fewest sacks allowed (20.)
“Though we’ve been able to manage it for the most part, it has been a challenge,” Hufnagel said.
Injuries during the football season are just routine business for the hogs up front in Calgary. But Hufnagel could only shake his head last month upon learning starting guard Shane Bergman partially tore his meniscus while working out back home in Ontario.
Bergman, a six-foot-seven, 347-pound behemoth, underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in mid-April. He hopes to be in the starting lineup come June 23 when the Stampeders kick off the regular season on the road against the Grey Cup champion Ottawa RedBlacks.
“I would expect he’ll be able to do the second week of training camp,” Hufnagel said “He’ll just be slow getting out onto the field.”
Bergman has company when it comes to offensive lineman coming off injury. Centre Pierre Lavertu started eight games last year and finished the season on the injured list with a high ankle sprain.
Karl Lavoie, a first-round pick out of Laval, lost almost all of his rookie season in 2015 due to a knee injury and then all his entire sophomore season when a routine knee scope showed significant damage.
“I’m hoping he can get out there and get some practices in,” Hufnagel said of the hard-luck Lavoie.
Right tackle Dan Federkeil battled through shoulder and back trouble in 2016 before undergoing surgery in December to repair a torn labrum. He joked about his chronic injury issues in February before inking a new a deal with the Stamps.
“No one wants to sign a 33-year-old Canadian tackle with two or three more nine-game seasons left?” he wrote on Twitter at the time.
All jokes aside, injury troubles for Calgary’s lineman are a chronic issue, especially considering Dimitri Tsoumpas and Brander Craighead were both forced to retire due to post-concussion syndrome.
Craighead is only 26. Tsoumpas is 31. Both were expected to anchor the Calgary line for a decade or more.
“We’re big guys and the job we have to do is really hard on our bodies,” Bergman said. “Sometimes, injuries just happen.”
In Calgary, it’s not a matter of if injuries are going to happen on the offensive line. Until proven otherwise, it’s simply a given.
“For the last two years, it’s just been a plague,” Mitchell says. “It’s something you can’t foresee and you can’t plan for. It’s just unlucky. It’s not that these guys haven’t been preparing their bodies and what not.”
So how do the Stampeders keep protecting Mitchell and opening up lanes for running back Jerome Messam with so many guys going down?
To Mitchell, it comes down to the “no passengers” approach of offensive line coach Pat DelMonaco.
    Just plug and play.
“Pat prepares every single person in that room as if he is a starter,” Mitchell says. “He’s not going to talk to you as if you’re a rookie. When you walk in that room, you better know your playbook.”
Heading into the 2017 season, the Stamps know they’ll need depth. So don’t be surprised to see the club bring up to three rookie international linemen – along with the returning Ucambre Williams and Randy Richards – as they toy with the idea of starting two internationals alongside three Canadians.
After all, Hufnagel knows he can never have too many quality hogs given the likelihood of his starters going down throughout the 18-game regular season.
    Such is life in Calgary.

Despite being born in the US, his Canadian parent meant Randy Colling was able to qualify as a National because of his dual citizenship and to be drafted sixth overall after three years in the Arena League.

Sunday, the long-ago, growing-up Tiger-Cat supporter’s football-playing son Randy, now a 26-year-old, 6-foot-2, 315-pound D-lineman with the Arena league’s Cleveland Gladiators, was selected sixth overall by the Calgary Stampeders in the annual CFL draft.
Colling graduated from Gannon University five years ago and has spent the last three seasons in the Arena league.
Like middle linebacker Alex Singleton, such a find as a starter during his freshman season last year, Colling is a U.S.-born talent with a Canadian family connection that resulted in dual citizenship.
“I know he has the ability,’’ says his dad. “And I think this is essential for his career at this point. Unfortunately, Randy came through a Division II school. The NFL just doesn’t have the time to teach you anything that you don’t know.
“If you don’t come from a big Division I school and they say ‘Do this drill’ or ‘Show me this technique’ and you don’t know, it’s ‘See ya.’
“From the quick homework I’ve been able to do, the Stampeders seem like a great club and the city seems to be a great destination for him. ...
In May of 2014, the CFL collective bargaining agreement changed to allow Canadian citizens to qualify as nationals. Which swung the door of opportunity wide open for both Singleton and, now, Colling.
“I wish I knew sooner he could’ve done this,’’ admits his dad, who still reportedly wears a Ticats winter coat and has a Darren Flutie jersey somewhere in the house. “We’d have initiated something a couple years ago. It was a long process. But I didn’t – and he didn’t – realize it was option he could actually pursue.”
At Quicken Loans Arena, known locally as The Q, Randy Colling shared digs with athletic royalty, King (LeBron) James, and last year earned all-star status with the Gladiators. ...
Stampeders GM John Hufnagel swung a deal with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to move up from the eighth slot to No. 6 in order to choose Colling. “He got into the draft a little later than everyone else did,’’ critiqued Hufnagel. “He graduated a few years ago, had a very productive college career and then went and played Arena football, an all-star in that league. Big man, powerful man. He can push the pocket, get penetration and give us great depth.”
The whole Colling family can’t wait. “Randy’s been to Hamilton a couple times, but never for a football game,’’ says Kirby. “So this is, in a way, kind of like going home again, to Canada. I’m just very, very excited he has this opportunity. And my dad … I’m sure he’s thrilled. He’s been gone 14 years now but I know he’s so happy. The only thing better is if he’d gone to Hamilton. But I’m sure that noise you’re hearing is him up in heaven, dancing.”.

Calgary has signed Internationals QB Ricky Stanzi, as well as RBs Jacobi Green and Terry Williams. All have NFL experience.

Stanzi, 29, spent time with six different NFL teams after he was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2011, but didn’t see any game action.
The six-foot-four, 220-pound pivot threw for a 7,377 career yards and 56 touchdowns with 31 interceptions at the University of Iowa.
He led the Hawkeyes to an Orange Bowl victory over Georgia Tech in 2010.
Stanzi was 26-9 as Iowa’s starter and passed for 3,004 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions in his senior year.
The Stampeders gained and shed a quarterback Tuesday when they released Nick Arbuckle.
Calgary has also brought international running backs Jacobi Green and Terry Williams on board.
Green, 24, tried out for the NFL’s Green Bay Packers and Carolina Panthers last year.
The five-foot-nine, 204-pound back racked up a career 28 touchdowns on 2,969 rushing yards, and 704 catching yards for six touchdowns for the University of Richmond Spiders.
Williams, 25, spent time in the New York Jets organization last year and attended the Carolina Panthers mini-camp earlier this month.
The five-foot-nine, 203-pound alumnus of Kutztown University rushed for 817 yards and 13 touchdowns, with five catches for 68 yards and a major for the Golden Bears in 2015.

In their typical efficient pattern, the Stampeders have already signed seven of their draft picks. In order of their selection they are: DL Randy Colling; OL Feliz Gacusana; DL Alexandre Gagnon; DB Adam Laurensee; WR Julan Lynch; RB Ante Milanovic-Litre; and WR Richard Sandani. Clicking on the url in the tweet will give you more information on each pick.

Calgary continues to follow an American National strategy. Last year it drafted Alex Singleton, an American with Canadian parents, who enabled him to gain Canadian citizenship and National ranking quickly. After Singleton had a stand-out rookie season, they repeated this approach this year, drafting Randy Colling, whose Canadian father enabled him to quickly obtain National status. Calling provides the added bonus of having three years of Arena League experience, raising the question whether the draft rules should be changed for players who have played professionally, not be able to be drafted years after what would have been their normal draft year.

QB Andrew Buckley is trying to be known as just Canadian QB.

“I’m a quarterback,’’ protests Andrew Buckley. “Not a Canadian quarterback, so much.
“I mean, my passport is Canadian, obviously . . .
“But the tag – Canadian QB – doesn’t matter anymore. I have a season under my belt. I’m more comfortable. Confident. I’m no different from anybody else.
    “I want to play.
“The first year, I’ll admit, there’s a bit of novelty to it. It’s a tag that follows you around. But at some point, you’ve got to shed it and just be another quarterback. ...
With the offloading of Drew Tate to the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Feb. 21 for a fifth-round pick in the 2018 CFL draft, the door at McMahon Stadium swung open for the right man to stride in and lay claim to second banana.
That Next Great Canadian Quarterback Search has — yes, sigh — been ongoing for awhile now.
Buckley could at least make a strong step in that direction by winning the backup job here. The Calgary-born double Hec Crighton Trophy winner out of the U of C was a lovely story out of camp a year ago.
Nailing down the No. 2 would move the yarn along; take it to an altogether different level.
Quarterbacking options on the roster at present: Buckley; Alva, Okla.’s Mitchell Gale, who has 48 regular-season appearances and two playoff tilts on his CFL resume; Camarillo, Calif.’s Nick Arbuckle, who spent a month on the Stamps’ practice roster last season. ...

Knowing that whoever does slot in behind incumbent star Bo Levi Mitchell isn’t apt to take an abundance of game-snaps is irrelevant. Moving up the pecking order is the aim.
“CFL MOP, for a reason,’’ says Buckley of his immediate role model. “All off-season, I’ve literally been watching (film of) him and studying the offence, all the decisions he made, why he made them.
“Basically just trying to emulate what he does. You can learn so much from him, good leader who just gets it done.”
The ideal example to aspire to is certainly there, in front of him.
“I enjoyed the step Andrew made last year,’’ says GM John Hufnagel. “Now I’m expecting him to better control not only his own presence on the field but also the huddle, and for him to be more consistent in his practice play.
“You have to find out whether or not a player hits a certain point and stops or whether he continues to grow.

Former Stampeder Stan Kaluznick has died at 85. He was also a good enough hockey player to attend the Red Wing's TC.

Kaluznick played with the Stamps from 1950-54 and was the club’s leading rusher in 1951. For his Stamps career, he played 73 regular-season games and accumulated 605 rushing yards and three touchdowns as well as 238 kick-return yards. The St. Boniface, Man., native made his professional debut with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1948 at the age of 17.
In addition to his football career, Kaluznick attended training camp with the National Hockey League’s Detroit Red Wings in 1949. ...
In 1966, Kaluznick bought the Western Canada Hockey League’s Calgary Buffaloes, renamed the team the Calgary Centennials and became the club’s first general manager. He also served as president of the World Professional Chuckwagon Association.

Entering his tenth year with the Stampeders, Charleston Hughes hopes he will be able to finish his career with Calgary.

Although, for one of the CFL’s premiere pass rushers, one of the best at shedding offensive linemen, the thought of shedding the galloping horse from his shoulder had never really occurred.
“I don’t know if I could imagine myself with a different coloured jersey on,” said Hughes. “It might have been weird, considering Calgary is the only team I’ve ever played for.” ...

Despite his age, the 33-year-old would have fetched top dollar on the open market had he waited until February. His 16 sacks in 2016 were the second-highest of his career, while the defensive end position was a glaring weak spot in the league heading into an otherwise stout free agent crop.
But Hughes saw more value in a good situation in Calgary. The CFL sack leader in 2016 was quick to point out that John Hufnagel and Dave Dickenson and co. have built a program that consistently wins.
With the Stamps, Hughes has earned five division all-star nods, three CFL All-Star honours and two Grey Cup Championships.
“When you’re a player that’s a part of a winning program like that, where I feel like I’m part of the reason why we’re winning like that — obviously I’m doing something right for the team to want me to come back and for me to play my whole entire career there,” he said.
Hughes, who has 88 sacks over 133 games next to his name, is not only talented but remarkably consistent, reaching double-digit sacks in four of the last five years (in 2014 he recorded eight sacks in 11 games).
He’s 15th on the all-time sack list and second among active players (Alouettes defensive end John Bowman is eighth all-time with 112 sacks).
