Bo Levi Mitchell says there was no structural damage to his knee as a result of injury last night according to a medical examination.

Although Mitchell was moving around relatively easily on the sidelines and did not appear to be in a lot of pain during the Ottawa game after his injury and he says there is no structural damage to his knee, he was wearing a sleeve on his right knee on the practice field the next day, so it remains to be seen if he will miss any time.

Nik Lewis will retire officially this weekend as a Stampeder after signing a one-day contract with Calgary, where he spent eleven seasons.

Larry Robinson, a Canadian Stampeder who played from 1961 to 1974 as a kicker, WR and DB, has died at age 76. For Argo fans, he will forever be remembered as the Stampeder who forced the McQuay fumble that more than likely decided the outcome of the 1971 Grey Cup, one of the most famous plays in Argo history. He also kicked the FG against the Saskatchewan Roughriders that put Calgary in the 1970 Grey Cup. Robinson was the first CFL player to score 1,000 points and is in the CFL Hall of Fame.

There are no shortage of fans who still marvel at the way he kicked the ball through the Taylor Field posts in unfathomably brutal conditions to secure their team a spot in the Grey Cup. ...

“He’s famous for kicking the field goal, but the only play I ever remember him talking about was when they played Toronto and he caused the fumble at the end of the game that Reggie Holmes recovered and they won the Grey Cup,” said Bob Viccars, another all-time great Stampeder who became one of Robinson’s best friends. “That was the only play I can ever remember him talking about.” ...

“There’s arguments about (the ’71 Grey Cup),” said teammate and longtime friend Basil Bark. “Everybody, including the Toronto Argonauts, said the ground caused the fumble . . . but it didn’t. Larry caused the fumble.
“So not only did he get us in the Grey Cup in ’70 in that game in Regina, he also helped us win that Grey Cup game in Vancouver against the Argonauts.”
Looking at Robinson’s numbers throughout his career, his accomplishments are almost staggering.
He was the first player in CFL history to score 1,000 points, was a three-time West all-star at defensive back and was named the top Canadian in the West Division in both 1964 and ’65. ...

For his efforts, Robinson was added to the Stampeders Wall of Fame in 1986, was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1998 and was added to the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. ...

Bark was the man who snapped the ball that Robinson kicked through the uprights back in ’70, and he can still hardly believe what his teammate and friend managed to do.
“However you want to exaggerate it, it was a 30-mile wind in his face or 30-below, but it was actually brutal,” Bark said. “When we got out on the field we thought the game was going to be cancelled. We were almost at the exact same spot in practice and he couldn’t get it to the goalline. To this day, I don’t know how he got it through.

Good to see Nik Lewis recognized by Calgary and allowed to retire as a Stampeder following a career that will put him in the CFL Hall of Fame eventually.

The Canadian Football League’s all-time leader in receptions with 1,051, Lewis played 11 seasons with the Stampeders (2004-14) before concluding his career with three seasons with the Montreal Alouettes. He accumulated 13,778 receiving yards and 71 touchdowns during his 14 seasons in the CFL.
Lewis holds the Stampeders record with 165 consecutive games played with at least one catch and surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in receiving in each of his first nine seasons. He was a CFL all-star three times as a member of the Stampeders and a West Division all-star on five occasions.

The Mineral Wells, Tex., native was a Grey Cup winner in 2008 and 2014 with Calgary.
“Nik was an important player for this organization for many years and it’s fitting that he retires as a member of the Stampeders,” said Hufnagel. “In particular, I recall Nik’s outstanding performance in the 2008 Grey Cup – 11 catches for 122 yards – to help us win a championship. His accomplishments on the field speak for themselves as Nik was certainly one of most popular players in Stampeders history with our fans. We celebrate his career on this day and wish him all the best for the future.”

Despite a large number of changes in personnel, Calgary is off to its best start at 5-0 since 1995, thanks to a very good offence and ST, but especially because of a defence that is giving up less than 10 points a game.

Calgary's 46 points against in five games works out to 9.2 points/per game. At this pace, they would end up with 166 points against, smashing the old record of 302 points set in 1989 by Edmonton by 136 points. You're right, the odds are very much against breaking the record by that much, but they do have a good chance of breaking the record for an 18 game season.They could average 19.6 points against in their remaining 13 games and still break the record.

Bo Levi Mitchell's 292 passing yards against the Als enabled him to pass Doug Flutie on the Stampeder's all-time passing yardage list. His 20,679 yards is now second to Henry Burris's 32,190 yards for Calgary QBs.

Mostly good news for the Stampeders: while Mitchell has pain in his injured knee he says it is getting better; National Tunde Adeleke is back at practice and may be able to play this week; however, Cordarro Law who was limping after the game against the Argos is less likely to be available against the Riders.

Besides being on a record-setting pace for fewest points allowed at 9.2 games, the Stampeders are leading the league in many other defensive stats.

Thus far, the Stampeder D has, it’s no secret, been pretty much impregnable, leading the league in sacks (16), fewest touchdowns allowed (4), fewest net yards in offence (243 per game), opposition first downs (75), turnover ratio (+13), fewest rush yards allowed, fewest pass yards allowed, etc.,

One of the reasons Calgary Stampeders has such a great winning record (at least in the regular season) is they are never satisfied and always looking for ways to improve, not even with a 6-0 start, their best since 1995.

We had the big punt return, then we started making a lot of mistakes,” Dickenson said after the 34-22 victory. “Some of it was communication. It’s just very difficult assignment-wise to make sure everyone is on the same page in this building.” ...

Calgary has released International DL Brandon Peguese after he completed his time on the six game injured list.

Bad news for WR Eric Rogers and the Stampeders: Rogers has had to undergo knee surgery and has been placed on the six game injured list. After leaving Calgary to go to the SF 49ers in 2016, he tore his ACL in TC and never got to play down south in 2016 and 2017.

The Stampeders will have International OL Randy Richards back for the Lions game after he missed all previous games this year. Richards further adds to Calgary's depth along the OL, having become a starter last year in the last nine regular season games, as well as in the playoffs.

Calgary dominates the league in nearly all defensive statistics, and at its current rate of 11.3 points it will smash the record of fewest points surrendered for an 18 game schedule by 98 points.

The Stamps (6-0) lead practically every defensive category: Net offence (242.5 yards per game); yards per play (4.7), first downs (89); first down average (4.8), plays per game (51.5) and turnovers (22). ...

Calgary is tied for first in sacks with Edmonton (17) and also tied for first in interceptions (7) with Winnipeg.
Calgary is currently under the club record of 13.1 average points against per game set in 1970. The CFL record of 10.5 was set by the Lions in 1964 ahead of Hamilton’s 10.9 in 1965.
