The Stampeders have resigned National four year veteran DL Ben Aguilar.

D’Aguilar appeared in all 18 regular-season games for the Stamps in 2016 and he recorded nine special-teams tackles, two defensive tackles including one tackle for loss and a fumble recovery. In 49 career games over four seasons for Calgary, D’Aguilar has amassed 35 special-teams tackles, four defensive tackles, one forced fumble and three fumble recoveries.
“Ben has been an important contributor to our special-teams units since joining the Stampeders and we are pleased to have him back,” said president and general manager John Hufnagel.
D’Aguilar was selected by Calgary in the second round of the 2013 CFL Draft and he joined the team that year. The former McMaster University standout was the 2012 winner of the J.P. Metras Trophy as the top lineman in Canadian university football.
“Calgary is my city,” said D’Aguilar. “I found my family here and I found myself. I just love coming into the locker room every day and seeing the guys. They’re more than just teammates, they’re friends.”

Deron Mayo is hoping to make a comeback with Calgary after tearing his patella last year and missing the last two regular season games and the playoffs.

Mayo’s ongoing recovery from the torn patella tendon that ended his 2016 season, however, means the sneakers will stay in storage this winter.
“Maybe I’ll coach instead,” he quips. “I can’t play, but maybe I can still contribute to the team that way.”
While he’s contemplating being the Stamps’ version of Gregg Popovich, Mayo’s knee is coming along quite nicely. He’s working out regularly at Canada Olympic Park and fully expects to be ready when training camp gets under way.
“It’s going well,” reports Mayo, who despite missing the final two regular-season games of the 2016 season led the Stamps with 77 tackles. “I’m in good hands with (athletic therapists) Josh (Termeer) and Stephen (Wady) and Dr. Ryan Martin. I’ve really noticed the progress and the rehab is right on schedule.”
Mayo is philosophical about the serious injury that left him writhing in pain on the McMahon Stadium turf during the Stamps’ Oct. 15 game against Montreal.
“I said this at the end of the season but in a sport like football, the injury rate is basically 100 per cent,” he reasons. “It happens to everyone at some point and you just have to deal with it.”

Former Stampeder Bill Britton has passed away at age 82.

In addition to being a former player – he played with the Red and White from 1962 to 1964 – Britton was later a Stampeders board member served a term as team president in 1983-84.
In 1985, he joined the board of directors for the National Football League’s Denver Broncos.
Britton joined the Stamps in 1962 as a result of a three-way trade involving Toronto and BC. The University of Western Ontario alum started his CFL career with four seasons with the BC Lions. He was a versatile player, seeing action as a fullback and linebacker and also occasionally serving as a kick returner.
Over his seven-year CFL career, he rushed for 505 yards and three touchdowns, caught 15 passes for 127 yards, returned 49 punts for 199 yards, nine kickoffs for 151 yards and recorded five interceptions.
Following his football career, Britton pursued a career in law and became a senior lawyer and chairman for the Calgary-based Bennett Jones firm. He also served as a director for a number of Alberta companies including ATCO.

Calgary could be losing a key cog in its OL to free agency.

It’s not often one of the CFL’s top players hits free agency in his prime. Yet Stamps offensive lineman Derek Dennis truly is one of the league’s best and, at age 28, the Stamps’ left tackle could be about to go on the market.
The mammoth 6-foot-3, 341-pound lineman helped Calgary surrender a league-low 20 sacks throughout 2016, also paving the way for CFL leading rusher Jerome Messam (1,198 yards).
And while Most Outstanding Player Bo Levi Mitchell had a season to remember and the Stamps’ defence also rose to the occasion throughout the year, much of the credit for Calgary’s historic 15-2-1 record belongs to the offensive line.
It was Dennis, the second-year Stampeder, protecting Mitchell’s blind side the entire way, allowing the Stamps’ pivot to stand mostly unscathed while throwing for 5,385 passing yards and a league-best 32 touchdowns.
Dennis is the sixth-ranked player pending free agency according to CFL.ca’s Top 30 Pending Free Agents:

The Stamps will have an early chance at revenge over their Grey Cup loss to Ottawa as they play them back-to-back in the first two weeks of the regular season.

    The annual Grey Cup rematch.
These teams could look quite different when they square off on June 23 but the intensity will be high.
It was only a handful of months ago that the REDBLACKS pulled off the largest upset in Grey Cup history, taking down the 15-2-1 Calgary Stampeders in overtime.
Revenge is a pretty fitting theme for Week 1.

One of the reasons the Stampeders are so successful over many years.

More discussion of why the Stamps needs will be mostly met internally.

There is an official start date to CFL free agency, but that has never mattered much to the Calgary Stampeders. When looking at the pending free agents, the Stamps are generally enamoured with the players they know best, which is basically how this off-season has gone. No other CFL team has retained its own talent more than the Stamps have in the months leading up to the time the market opens, and don’t be surprised if they announce a couple more signings before the frenzy starts.
What the Stampeders could use however, probably won’t be found on the free-agent market anyway. If there is one area that has been lacking over the past two seasons, it’s depth on the offensive line, although that’s not really the fault of the players who man that position. Injuries have hit the Stampeders depth hard among the protectors, so what this team really needs is more capable hands, especially players holding a Canadian passport. What team doesn’t need another Canadian offensive lineman? Right.
That’s why they are so precious. This free-agent crop doesn’t have much in the way of Canadian hoggies, so expect Ottawa RedBlacks guard Nolan MacMillan to be a hot commodity. The problem with the Stamps is when they are healthy, they don’t have a spot for a free-agent to start, so it’s more likely they replenish this area in the draft and hope the likes of Karl Lavoie, Cam Thorn and Roman Grozman keep progressing and can contribute more when called upon.
Already this off-season, the Stamps took one of the most attractive pending free agents off the market when they re-signed Pierre Lavertu, locking up their starting centre. They still have some work to do though. Some players on the ‘must-sign’ list are offensive tackles Dan Federkeil and Derek Dennis, the former a local product who isn’t likely to go anywhere else and the latter looking to land in the NFL. Both are extremely valuable though and would be tough to replace.
The other area the Stamps could use more depth is at the Canadian receiver position, thanks to the pending loss of Simon Charbonneau-Campeau, who is going back to university to finish his degree and won’t play this season, instead focusing on coaching the receivers at Sherbrooke. Again, this isn’t an area with a lot of names to be had in free-agency, although B.C. Lions veteran Marco Iannuzzi would look great in Stampeders colours. It doesn’t hurt that he’s a product of the local St. Francis Browns system. Instead, expect the Stamps to turn their attentions to players from their own program, with the top names on the priority list being receiver Marquay McDaniel and defensive tackle Micah Johnson.
McDaniel’s value to the Stamps was front and centre during the Grey Cup because after he went out with an injury, the offence didn’t quite have the same oomph to it. Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell certainly has a comfort level with McDaniel that can’t be overstated, and the passer has told the receiver to get that deal done over social media in the past couple of weeks. As important as McDaniel is to the offence, the same could be said on the other side for Johnson, who has anchored the defence from the middle the past few seasons. When healthy, and he’s already gone through two knee reconstructions, Johnson is as strong a tackle as there is in this league. His return seems to depend on whether he finds an NFL deal, and his time seems to be running out on that idea.
There is also a trio of receivers — Bakari Grant, Joe West and Greg Wilson — set to become free agents, but the market for internationals is much more stocked. There is a good chance the Stamps get a couple of those players back.
As for players the Stamps might pursue, how about Canadian linebacker Sam Hurl? The former University of Calgary Dino could work as a backup to Alex Singleton and provide some special-teams depth. Don’t expect the Stamps to make a huge splash in free agency though. They almost never do when GM John Hufnagel has called the shots. The system has worked well though. The Stamps build in other ways, and when they keep their players around, they are generally successful.

International DT Micah Johnson has resigned with the Stampeders.

That keeps yet another one of the Stamps key pieces from hitting the free agent market.
The 28-year-old had 36 tackles, seven sacks and two forced fumbles in 17 games which earned him 2016 CFL all-star honours. Johnson has played four seasons in Calgary and in 46 games with the Stamps he has 96 defensive tackles, 18 sacks and one interception.
The University of Kentucky product joins offensive lineman Pierre Lavertu, defensive ends Charleston Hughes and Cordarro Law as well as kicker Rene Paredes and punter Rob Maver among others in extending with the club.
