Kohlert is a five-year CFL veteran who played 85 career regular-season games, including 71 starts, for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 2012-16. The 29-year-old Regina native has 160 career catches for 1,630 yards and nine touchdowns. In 2016, Kohlert had 29 catches for 283 yards and one major and was two-for-two in passing including his first career touchdown pass in an Oct. 8 win over the BC Lions.
“Rory is an all-around receiver with good pass-catching ability and he’s a reliable blocker in the run game,” said Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson.
Kohlert attended training camp with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2011 after signing as an undrafted free agent. His rights briefly belonged to the Ottawa RedBlacks when he was selected in the Dec. 16, 2013, expansion draft before his contract expired and he re-signed with the Blue Bombers in February of 2014.

Former Argo Mitchell Gale and HC Dave Dickenson comment on his move to Calgary.

“I like Mitchell’s competitiveness and he has the arm to make all the throws,” said Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson. “I think he’s a good fit for our system and I’m excited about the opportunity to work with him.”
Gale, a native of Alva, Okla., entered the CFL in 2013 as a member of the Argos. He dressed for 32 games with Toronto from 2013-15 and for three games – including two post-season contests — with Hamilton in 2015 before joining the Roughriders. In 48 career regular-season games, Gale has completed 88 of 158 passes for 1,050 yards and four touchdowns with three interceptions. He has also rushed for 153 yards and two scores.
He played college football at Abilene Christian and was a four-year starter for the Wildcats, throwing for more 12,000 yards with 97 touchdown passes. Both marks are school records.
“Coming to Calgary was just the right decision for me at this time,” said Gale. “The Stampeders are a well-established organization and I’m looking forward to working with everyone there and contributing in any way that I can.”

The player the Argos traded to Calgary (under duress) for the immortal Akwasi Antwi has resigned with the Stampeders.

The Calgary Stampeders have signed national offensive lineman Dan Federkeil.
The 33-year-old Medicine Hat native has spent the past four seasons with the Stamps, making a total of 42 starts at right tackle. He has also played in three playoff games and two Grey Cups with the Red and White and was a member of the Stamps’ 2014 championship team.
“Once we were comfortable with Dan’s health situation, we were happy to welcome him back,” said Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson. “He’s a very good football player who will continue to help us win lots of football games.”
Federkeil is medically cleared to play after undergoing shoulder surgery at the conclusion of the 2016 season.
Federkeil previously played four seasons with the National Football League’s Indianapolis Colts and is part of a select group of players with both Grey Cup and Super Bowl rings. He played five seasons with the Dinos and in 2005 was a finalist for the J.P. Metras Trophy as the top lineman in Canadian university football. Federkeil was a second-team Canadian university all-star in both 2003 and 2005.
“I wanted to take a step back and evaluate things after my shoulder surgery at the end of last season but now that I’m healthy and ready to go, I’m looking forward to starting the season,” said Federkeil.

The longest serving Stampeder has resigned with Calgary.

The 30-year-old Cochrane product is the longest-serving Stamp on the current roster, having joined the club in 2007. He has played 164 career regular-season games for the Red and White and also appeared in 11 playoff contests and three Grey Cups.
“Rob is one of the true leaders of our team,” said Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson. “He had another strong season in 2016 and we’re counting on him to continue being an important contributor to our success.”
Cote is a mainstay of the Stamps’ special-teams units and has recorded 77 special-teams tackles during his career. On offence, his blocking has helped three Stampeders running backs win a combined total of six rushing titles during the past 10 seasons including Jerome Messam in 2016.
Cote has also contributed 106 career catches for 1,108 yards and 12 touchdowns as well as 98 rushing yards. In Week 9 of the 2016 season, Cote made his 100th career catch when he hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Bo Levi Mitchell in a win over the BC Lions.
Cote has served as a team captain for five years and is a two-time winner of the Presidents’ Ring award as voted by his teammates for combining excellence on the football field with leadership, inspiration and motivational skills. Cote has also won the Herm Harrison Memorial Award for his work in the community.
“I’m happy to be back,” said Cote. “I’m proud to be a Stampeder and I wanted to be a part of the organization again this season.”

Calgary has traded QB Drew Tate to Ottawa for a 2018 fifth round draft choice. The Stampeders return is pretty for an experienced QB.

The 32-year-old pivot is entering his ninth season in the CFL with a handful of starts and years in Calgary’s system under his belt. The Iowa product has a 4,670 yards and 32 touchdowns on 380 of 572 career passing.
Although he has spent the majority of his career as a backup, Tate had an opportunity to take over the starting spot in Calgary back in 2012 when Henry Burris and the Stampeders parted ways. A shoulder injury early in the season sidelined the pivot for the majority of the year. In 2013, he battled Bo Levi Mitchell for the starting job out of training camp which ultimately went to Mitchell.
In 2014, Tate helped the Stampeders capture the 102nd Grey Cup with a win over Hamilton where he had two rushing touchdowns in short yardage situations.

That's all they had to give up to get Tate? I'd rather have Tate than Willy!

Ian Busby discusses why he thinks Drew Tate was traded below.

There are the obvious reasons why the Calgary Stampeders have made a move with their quarterback depth chart this off-season. Drew Tate will turn 33 this season and on the downside of his career, plus he was due a roster bonus and his contribution to the salary cap was too high for what he contributed. It was time, with Bo Levi Mitchell proving to be durable and worthy of every snap all season long, that the Stamps should be moving on to a different name as their designated No. 2.
Yet after eight seasons with the Stamps, and how comfortable Tate had grown into working behind Mitchell, one thing became apparent, at least from an outsider’s point of view. You probably won’t get anyone from the organization to admit it, but the question is there: Does Tate have the extreme desire to compete anymore? Clearly, the Stamps felt they needed to move Tate out desperately, which is why they took a fifth-round draft pick from the Ottawa RedBlacks for what is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the CFL. With a pending release likely imminent because they were shopping him around, teams around the CFL obviously felt if they were interested in Tate, they would simply wait it out and not use an asset to get him.
Then the Stamps signed Mitchell Gale last week, signalling they intended to part ways with Tate. It seems fitting that Tate moves into the RedBlacks depth chart to replace the retired Henry Burris, the same player he edged out of Calgary in 2011. Back then, Tate played with a fire in his belly and ‘I-will-stop-at-nothing attitude’ about winning. For two seasons when he was designated the Stampeders’ starter (2012-13), he played all-out early in the season and went out with injury as a result.
In the past three seasons, something changed. Constantly people asked why Tate hadn’t tried going anywhere else to become a No. 1 quarterback seeing as how Mitchell wasn’t going to be unseated. There was no easy answer to that. How could someone with all the skills to be a starting QB not try desperately to make it happen? In Calgary, he made good money and was part of a winning team, and both of those things make life enjoyable. But the final sign that maybe Tate wasn’t the same came in his lone start of 2016. The 15-1-1 Stamps could have set the best record for an 18-game season with a win over the playoff-less Montreal Alouettes.
While Tate said he was excited about the start, his comments about the record raised an eyebrow or two. “Honestly, and this may be weird to you, 16 doesn’t mean anything,” Tate said at the time. “Because to me, it’s all about the ring and the cup. This isn’t baseball. We don’t pop champagne when we clinch a division. There’s still games to be played. We’ll pop champagne when we win the cup but right now, we’ve got our hands full with Montreal.”
Of course, it’s all about the Grey Cup, but winning out and carrying momentum into the playoffs was also a goal. And this wasn’t a division clinching game. It was a noteworthy TEAM record.

However, Tate is there as a veteran back because he should be able to operate the offence when given the chance, and this was a chance for him to prove he could still step in without the team missing a beat. In that 17-8 loss to the Alouettes, Tate went 22-of-37 passing for 218 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.
Tate should fit in well with the RedBlacks as caddy for Trevor Harris. If he still has that competitive fire, then he should provide the defending champs with a reliable backup.

Jim Mitchener, a member of the Stampeders’ undefeated 1948 team, passed away on Jan. 31 at the age of 87.
Mitchener, a Donavon, Sask., native, turned in a key play in the Stamps’ 12-7 win over the Ottawa Rough Riders in the 1948 Grey Cup. After a Rough Riders turnover in the fourth quarter, Mitchener took a lateral from Woody Strode and carried the ball to the Ottawa 10-yard line. On the next play, Pete Thodos scored the game-winning touchdown for the Red and White.

Calgary has signed two Internationals: QB Nick Arbuckle and DB Joel Ross.

Arbuckle attended the 2016 mini-camp of the National Football League’s Pittsburgh Steelers. He played two seasons at Georgia State and as a senior in 2015 was first-team all-Sun Belt Conference and was also the conference’s student-athlete of the year. He set a Sun Belt record with 4,368 passing yards in 2015 and set school records with 307 completions and 28 touchdowns. ...
Ross was added to the practice roster of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015 and attended training camp with the Chicago Bears in 2016. He played four seasons (2011-14) at Appalachian State and was a three-year starter. He played 41 career games for the Mountaineers and during his senior season in 2014 he had 39 total tackles, one sack and three interceptions.

One of the first Black players to play in the CFL, Ezzrett (Sugarfoot) Anderson, has died at age 97.

The six-foot-four Anderson played with Calgary from 1949 until 1955. After his playing days, Anderson remained with the organization as a ticket-account representative and ambassador.
Anderson registered 142 receptions for 2,020 yards and 10 TDs with Calgary. He was added to the Stampeders’ Wall of Fame in 1990 and inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
“Sugarfoot is an iconic figure in Stampeders history,” president and general manager John Hufnagel said in a statement. “He was a link to the early days of the franchise and he was a frequent and welcome presence at McMahon Stadium and Stampeders functions for many years.
