The Stampeders jumped out to a 22 -3 lead over BC, before the Lions scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to make the pre-season game close, 23-18. National QB Andrew Buckley went 6/8 for 59 yards but was not able to score as he battled former Argo Mitchell Gale and rookie Rick Stanzi for the backup QB spot. First string QB Bo Levi Mitchell sat out the game Jonathon Jennings looked rusty, going 3/8 for 28 yards while Lulay went 4/5 and Keith Price and Alex Ross each led their team to a TD.

Here are the video highlights of Calgary's 36-35 win over the Eskimos, including Finch's 81 yard return, Andrew Buckley's fine performance, and D'haquille Williams 90 yard TD reception for the Eskimos.

It looks like eighth round draft choice (70th overall), Richard Sandani, has got a good chance of making the team at least the PR when final cuts are announced Saturday. He caught a 24 yard TD pass in the last game and guest coach and former Stampeder Jabari Arthur has noted that Sandani has a frame as good as any National receiver in the league and consequently a very high ceiling, although he needs some polishing.

Was a nice TD grab on a beauty throw; but Sadani is maybe in tough to make the Stamps receiving corps - with Lamar Durant, Anthony Parker and Juwan Brescacin there as NIs; Brescacin really impressed me with some nice grabs that game and he made a couple of outstanding grabs last year in limited action; another big target receiver - and was once rated highly in the receiver class for the NFL draft. Durant & Brescacin could both probably start for the Stumps and IMO both are capable of big CFL seasons - not if they only pencil in one NI receiver as starters there though ?

Calgary has annouced its cuts with DL Ben Aguilar and former Argo QB Mitchell Gale being the most notable. The Stampeders have also announced that three players are going back to school (something no other team has done at the time of their final cuts): Nationals WR Richard Sandani,DL Alexandre Gagnon, and DB Adam Laurensee.

Despite being signed after four practices had already been completed, LB Jameer Thurman has made the most talent laden team in the CFL.

The former Indiana State linebacker left quite an impression in his first game playing three-down football, racking up two sacks and causing havoc whenever he was on the field when the Stamps defeated the BC Lions 23-18 in the pre-season kickoff.
Making plays is nothing new for Thurman – he finished his college career with the Sycamores with 340 tackles, 11th all-time in the school’s record books. ...

Head coach Dave Dickenson took notice of his strong performances throughout camp and sees the potential for a long CFL run for the 22-year-old.
“He makes things look easy and he’s growing,” Dickenson said. “He’s a very fluid and smooth athlete and could be a real good answer at linebacker for a long time.”

Charleston Hughes 3 sacks against the Roughriders put him back in the race for the league lead in sacks now that the Argos Victor Butler, who has seven sacks, is injured. Hughes is now tied for second with four. It also shows how outstanding Butler has been.

Deron Mayo, who was Calgary's nominee for Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2015 but suffered a severe leg injury in 2016 that has kept him out of the lineup, is on the verge of coming back.

The strong just keep getting stronger.
LB Devon Mayo and National DT Junior Turner are set to play their first game for Calgary against BC this week after knee injuries in 2016 meant they were not available until now.
The Stampeders have also added a DB with NFL experience that they have been after for some time to their practice roster - Mario Butler.

Bo Levi Mitchell hurt his shoulder in the game against the Lions last week, while Messam injured his knee and Charleston Hughes, who has missed several games already, also had an undisclosed injury. Dickenson thinks they will all be back for the Argo game but having watched the Lions' game at the stadium Mitchell's throwing was far from his usually accurate self, and the injuries to Messam and Hughes hardly seemed mild. They may play but could well be gimpy against the Argos.

Rookie third round draft choice Tunde Adeleke has been another find for the Stampeders. He has played in seven games including three starts at safety, making 7 DT tackles and 6 ST tackles, as well as returning five punts for 102 yards, including one for a TD. The numerous talented Canadians in their lineup year-after-year demonstrates that Calgary has the best scouting in the league.

Former Stampeder CFL All Star and NFL Pro Bowler Brandon Browner, who won a Grey Cup with Calgary in 2008, is facing felony charges for making threats against a woman. He has also had repeated NFL drug suspensions and commented after being released by the Saints that he "took that few millions (and) ran with it".

There is a strong reaction to BC's Micah Awe's brutal hit on Messam with even Derek Dennis of the Riders commenting on it in terms of CTE.

But let’s be real, there was no excuse for Saturday night’s officiating crew at McMahon Stadium missing B.C. Lions linebacker Micah Awe’s head-butt to the back of Jerome Messam’s head.
The Calgary Stampeders running back was already dropping to the ground after a third-quarter run at midfield when Awe launched himself helmet-first into the back of Messam’s head.
It was visible from the McMahon Stadium pressbox, which is a good 300 feet from where the play took place. How the field-level officiating crew missed it is baffling.

They don’t get much more obvious than this.
Messam stayed on the field for several minutes after the play and then went to the Stampeders dressing room. The team announced he was doubtful to return. IMO he should be suspended. The second url below includes a video of the hit.
The hit was exactly the sort of thing the CFL has been trying to remove from the game.
At the very least, it should have been a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty, and there’s an argument to be made that it should have received an excessive objectionable-conduct or rough-play penalty, which would have resulted in a disqualification for Awe.
    Instead, the Lions weren’t penalized.

Roy Finch will receive serious consideration for the John Agro Special Teams award, especially after his performance against BC last week. He leads in punt return yardage and return TDs.

The diminutive dynamo didn’t find the end zone in the victory, but his deft touch with returns gave the Stamps great field position all night.
He ran back six punts for 174 yards – his longest a 66-yard scamper – and returned two kickoffs for 56 yards.
Those 174 punt yards vaulted him to 1,009 on the season, breaking his own Stamps record in that category

Jerome Messam and HC Dave Dickenson claim that Messam does not have a concussion but a neck injury from Micah Awe's savage hit. Whether Messam plays will Sunday will be a game time decision. I wonder if the Stampeders are rushing Messam back and risking shortening his career as appeared to happen with Jon Cornish and his repeated concussions. Messam sure looked woozy after the hit.

Calgary Stampeders running back Jerome Messam says he'll be a game-time decision Sunday against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
The Canadian Football League's leading rusher took a hard hit to the back of his helmet in the third quarter of in Saturday's 27-13 win over the B.C. Lions. Messam left the game and did not return.
Lions linebacker Micah Awe, who registered the hit, received the league's maximum fine for leading with the crown of his helmet.
"I feel the league took a stance to try and protect players," Messam told reporters Thursday.

    http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/...787/story.html

Even BC HC Wally Buono is not defending Micah Awe, who has been involved in repeated high hits, despite Awe claiming they were cases of high speed split-second decisions on the collisions.

When Buono played linebacker for the Montreal Alouettes between 1972-1983, players were taught to stick their mask in the opposition player’s numbers, wrap him up and tackle him to the ground. Now, anything involving the head — especially in teaching fundamentals — is avoided because of the possibility of injury and legal implications. It’s now chest to chest and then wrap up the opposing player.“I played at the professional level and when I drop my head, I know I’m dropping my head,” said Buono. “I have an intent.“It’s why the league is so black and white on it. It’s not that you don’t know what you’re doing — you know exactly what you’re doing. You drop your head and target somebody, you have the ability to do that or not do that.”

Former NFL DB Mario Butler who was added to Calgary's PR in August has been replaced on the PR by Joel Ross, who also played in the NFL, and was on the team's PR last year and in TC this year before being cut.
