If they draw 500 prospects it pays for the costs.

I am hopeful that withh all our injuries last year some of the newer DB's will step up this year. And I will watch two bew LB's with interest. Barber and Plummer looked very good on their promo videos, hopefully they can stay healthy. One can hope,

Not that there is any requirement, but it got me thinking for the $100 the team should provide team shorts and shirts for each player attending.
Let them have it, great advertising for friends and family and showing the class of the organization.

Would love to see the roster of players who attend these camps. I am sure there would be some familiar names on it.

thats infact what it does. In fact, they usually get up and say "we don't want your $100, if your not a top college player, if you haven't ran a xyz in the 40, keep your money" before the first day. Basically they cut almost all the guys that still pay by 40 time, shuttle test, etc in day one. Then its one-on-one drills, handful of guys from each camps game get OTA invites, maybe 1 or 2 make it to TC.

it only pays a fraction of the cost of the camp.

I bet they take every dollar they could get and make money hosting these open tryouts. That's why they are always held down south. They'll be glad to take your dough, cut you after 1 day. If they find so little quality, you wonder why they keep wasting their time and expenses on this passive form of recruiting and scouting, if only to find fodder for training camp. Tier 2 junior hockey teams fundraise using this open tryout model throughout Ontario, but why is a pro team doing this unless they spend so little on scouting. OHL clubs do not even do this.

The meaning of insanity is doing the same thing that does not work over and over again. I'm really starting to get sour about this organization. I still care, because I periodically check this site, but I really have not been impressed with their off-season. They've provided nothing to get excited about for this upcoming season. Sorry, but that's the way I feel. I wonder if I'm alone in this.

I don't agree with you that this is a waste of time at all. With so many U.S. colleges, it would be impossible to fully scout all of them, and these try-outs provide an opportunity for the team to find that "diamond-in-the rough" who may have been overlooked but has talent and passion to play. For example, Cameron Wake was shopping himself around to all teams and could barely get a sniff of interest until the BC Lions took a chance on him. The rest is history. I am not positive, but I think several players the Argos eventually signed were discovered at these free-agent tryouts. Cory Boyd comes to mind, but like I said, I am not positive. Not sure if that info is kept anywhere or if anyone else can clarify. But in the end, what does it hurt?
