LB (like Tackle) is going American around the league

    Key reasons are:
    - injury replacement (easy to replace with a "comparable" US Player)
    - teams are going 10-12 americans on defence now.
    - cap related: why spend $200-$250k on a starting cdn LB, when you can have a starting/rotational DT for 140k, 4th & 5th WR for 100k. BC is even looking at going with cdn field corners for 75-100k.

These are the same reasons for the death of the cdn tackle position.

Just FYI - Ottawa won the GC last year, starting a rookie Canadian at OT; and they also played 4, 5 or 6 Canadians on defence - (4 in the mix in D-line rotation, and Pruneau at safety).

The CFL is a very copy-cat league with a lot of shared "thinking" - especially a dim or limited view of Canadian talent at times (the 7 only need apply schtick), but it doesn't have to be that way, and individual teams are allowed to do their own roster thinking. Most trendy CFL thinkers might like OT jobs to be just for imports now, but the Als had one of the best O-lines in the league for years awhile back with 2 Canadian OTs (Bourke & Perrett) as league best calibre fixtures for quite some time. BTW - who are the easy to find, easily replaceable superstar import OTs the Argos will have this year ?

And Herdman and Mulumba-T are examples of IMO blue-chip MLB prospects available this draft - potential starters for teams in need there, and right away - like Singleton was for the Stamps last season. Henoc Muamba will likely start at MLB for the Riders; i'll bet Greenwood if he's healthy has a big impact on the Esks D, I'll bet we see Plesius play some LB on the Als D and the Bombers might give Miles a real shot to win the vacant MLB job there. Teams like the Bombers Argos or Ottawa have a big opening / need for upgrade at MLB, and they could draft one of those guys to compete and maybe start. Both those draftable MLBs are IMO first round CFL draft material.

I'm sure there will be something, but he really appears to have lost interest. He doesn't even tweet about prospects any more. And this from a guy who not too long ago created his own combine to promote Canadian college prospects? It's strange.

Does he still get to write regularly about football on that TSN (?) site (does it still exist)? IF he does and he no longer covers the CFL draft or Canadian prospects, I would find that strange indeeed.

OV is not the only one who thinks this way. Marshall Ferguson's Mock Draft had him going #3 overall. Of course many factors will go into when he is drafted, not least of which whether he is drafted or signed by the NFL. However, this ranking does suggest that some others believe that the death of the Canadian LB has been greatly exaggerated.

I hate to theoretically place a player in their university market. It just feels too damn convenient. With that said, Simon Fraser linebacker Jordan Herdman screams of a tackling machine with longevity. After his impressive week at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., I’m not sure how BC lets him slide past them at three to weak side linebacker needy teams Edmonton and – eventually – Toronto.
The BC Lions brought in now-former Blue Bombers weak side linebacker Tony Burnett in free agency but aside from special teams ace Jason Arakgi, there isn’t much depth in the Lions’ linebacking core after the departure of Adam Bighill.
Take Herdman. Watch him rack up tackle after tackle like Eskimos linebacker JC Sherritt, put him on posters, trot him out to community events and pat yourself on the back.

Five players were selected from the Eastern Combine today to the National Combine: receiver Malcolm Carter (Carleton); DL Mathieu Dupuis (Montreal); DB Harland Hastings (Acadia); LB Alexandre Chevrier; and RB Anthony Gosselin.

Carleton receiver Malcolm Carter, Montreal defensive lineman Mathieu Dupuis, Acadia DB Harland Hastings and Sherbrooke’s linebacker Alexandre Chevrier and running back Anthony Gosselin were all chosen to advance
At 6’6”, Ottawa Sooners receiver Malcom Carter led all participants at the combine with a 40” vertical and finished with the second-fastest 40-yard time (4.646). Carter also tested well in the three-cone drill with a time of 7.20 seconds and earned the second-fastest shuttle time of 4.17 seconds. ...

Montreal Carabins defensive lineman Mathieu Dupuis displayed his strength by completing the most bench reps at the Regional combine with 31. The Laval, Que native finished with a shuttle time of 4.59 seconds and a three-cone time of 7.60.
A native of Otterburn Park, Quebec, running back Anthony Gosselin also shined and received an invitation to the CFL Combine. The product from Sherbrooke finished second with 28 bench reps, and was timed at 4.33 seconds in the short shuttle and 7.31 seconds in the three-cone drill.
Sherbrooke linebacker Alexandre Chevrier finished tied for fourth in the 40-yard dash with a time of 4.71 seconds. Chevrier, from Pointe-Claire, Quebec, also finished with the fifth-best longest broad jump (9’11.25”).
Defensive back Harland Hastings from Acadia University showed off his leaping abilities by ending the day in the top five in vertical jump 36” – good enough for second – and also finished second in broad jump at 10’5”.

Hoover is a guy I'd love to see the Argos be able to get in the later rounds - a potential good safety project - 6-1 frame, nose for the ball (CIS INT leader in 2015) and some very good testing #s (35" vertical, 10'4" broad jump = shows explosiveness, and pretty good 40, shuttle and 3 Cone quickness numbers). McNair is already a very good safety prospect with CIS all-star recognition there, and Gillespie is a decent prospect too. I have hopes that Gabriel will progress to be a very good starting CFL safety for years with the Argos, but nice to see him pushed or backed-up by a good young prospect there.

More info on the Ontario Combine:

Queen’s defensive end Zac Sauer is among can’t-miss prospects this time around, as the 6-foot-3, 236-pound pass rusher comes in with nine sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss over the last two seasons. Last year, Sauer participated in the East-West Bowl, hitting 18 reps on the bench.
Scouts also got a glimpse of Toronto defensive back Richard Gillespie at last year’s East-West Bowl. Gillespie, a 5-foot-9, 190-pound defender, ran a 4.65 while putting up 16 reps on the bench. ...
Friday’s regional will also include one international free agent (Brandyn Bartlett, a linebacker out of Tusculum) and six national free agents. The remaining 35 prospects are eligible for the CFL Draft. ...
Testing starts at 9:30 a.m. ET with height and weight, hand and arm measurements, video shot, vertical and broad jumps and the bench press. At 12:50 p.m., prospects will take part in the highly-anticipated 40-yard dash as well as the short shuttle and 3-cone drill.
After positional drills and one-on-ones at 2:30 p.m., the final announcement of those invited to the national combine is expected at approximately 4:40 p.m. ...

    – Of the 42 players currently on the Ontario Regional Combine roster, 35 are draft eligible.
    – While the field is fairly split, nine receivers lead the way among most popular positions (Full breakdown: 9 WR, 7 OL, 6 LB, 6 DB, 6 DL, 5 RB, 1 FB, 1 P/K, 1 P).
    – 16 schools/programs will be represented, led by the six from Windsor. The full breakdown is as follows: Windsor (6), Wilfrid Laurier (5), Guelph (5), Queen’s (5), Toronto (4), McMaster (4), Hamilton Hurricanes (2), Western University (2), York (1), Laval (1), Tusculum (1), Windsor AKO (1), Norwich (1), Eastern New Mexico (1), UCLA (1), Waterloo (1) and the GTA Grizzlies (1)

Marshall Ferguson discusses Antony Auclair's Eastern Combine results and his CFL and NFL draft possibilities below. Seventeen NFL scouts and the Als Kavis Reed were at his Pro Day. If he is still available a potential game changer like Auclair could be worth drafting by the Argos.

At six feet, five inches tall, Auclair is the second-tallest receiver ever evaluated in a pro day or combine setting. Second only to Malcolm Carter, whose six-foot, six-inch frame and stunning 40 time earned him a national combine invitation after a stellar performance at the Eastern Regional Combine last Friday.
Auclair’s 40 time was equally special at 4.82 seconds while weighing 256 pounds – again, the largest receiver ever evaluated – and he believes a tweaked hamstring held him back from running faster.
I watched Auclair live in person at the 2016 Vanier Cup and left feeling his aggression on special teams and his physicality didn’t match his natural size and ability. However, after watching film, there is plenty to contradict that and confirm what most evaluators will see this spring — that Auclair is a tall, strong dominating force over the middle and a very capable special teamer. ...

It would be crazy to think any CFL team would not want a player of Auclair’s stature and ability put on display with the Laval Rouge et Or. He is your classic ‘best player available’ argument though due to the interest he has received from numerous NFL teams.
At what point will a CFL team look at Auclair and realize he is worth the risk and they would rather bet on seeing him at some point rather than take a developmental player of the same position?
That’s the great question surrounding Auclair in this draft and we likely won’t have an answer anytime soon as he tests the National Football League waters.
Due to Auclair’s unique size and playing style, fit is another question. We use fullbacks as tight ends, extra offensive lineman as tight ends, sometimes we even motion scrappy slotbacks and wide receivers down the line of scrimmage to act as a tight end. What the modern CFL rarely, if ever utilizes is a true in line tight end.
As a result Auclair might actually be better suited to the american game, but I would love to see him be a game changer and have an offence alter its scheme to fit his talents and skill set. ...
Auclair will continue to grab scouts eyes from both sides of the border throughout April. If we ever see him north of the border in June, get ready for a game-changer.

The five players who will advance from the Ontario Combine to the National Combine are: 6' 2", 190 DB Jordan Hoover (Waterloo), 5' 9", 170 WR Adam Adebobye (York), DL 6' 1", 255 Mark Mackie (McMaster), 6' 1", 213 RB Jonah Pataki (Queens), and 5' 9", 190 DB Richard Gillespie (Toronto).
Somewhat surprisingly Queen's DE Zac Sauer did not make the cut.

    Observations of combine:

    Three players stood out IMO.

. Hoover looks all the part of a free safety at the pro level. Tested very well. In the one on ones he was unbeatable except for one receiver. Plays very aggressively, though he will have to tone down the occasional grabbing and especially the hitting beyond 5 yards. Should do well at the National Combine, if today's performance is anything to go by.

. Adeboboye was by far the best receiver on the field. Both fast and quick he dominated the one on ones. They had him go against Hoover three time and each time Adeboboye beat him cleanly. He also showed great hands. Only 5' 9" but plays a lot taller.

. Mackie was a real surprise. He tested very well in all events. However, it was in the one on ones, where he really pulled away from the competition. He was unstoppable regardless of whom he faced. Several times there was unsolicited applause from the onlookers, when he beat his blocker cleanly. The guy has a real motor. Looking forward to seeing him going against the best OL players at the National.

Adeboboye is 5'9"/170 but somehow slower than 6.4"/233 Brian Jones? It's not all numbers, obviously, but... good luck to him!
