    2017 World Hockey Championships

Mitch Marner played a major role in helping Canada win its final game of the group stage of the 2017 World Hockey Championships.
Mitch Marner’s hockey sense has won him a few admirers early in his hockey career. You can add Canada head coach Jon Cooper to that list.
Marner scored twice on Tuesday and Canada’s power play continued to roll as it finished its preliminary round at the world hockey championship with a 5-2 win over Finland.
The Canadians scored early and often, with Marner notching his third and fourth goals of the tournament in an opening period where Canada outshot the Finns 15-6.
"He oozes with confidence and hockey sense and skill," Cooper of the 20-year-old, who was named Canada’s player of the game. "You give him the puck in the open ice and you sit there and think he’s got one of three options, then he invents option four, five and six. It’s impressive to watch him play." ...
With the win, Canada finishes the preliminary round with a tournament-best 19 points and a 6-0-0-1 record. The Canadians will play co-host Germany in the quarter-finals in Cologne on Thursday. Germany claimed the last playoff spot in the group with a 4-3 shootout win over Latvia.

Below is summary of the group stage results.

As the group stage wrapped up yesterday at the 2017 IIHF World Hockey Championships, the tournament shrank from sixteen teams to eight.

Quarterfinal action gets underway on March 18. First, let’s look back at each group and how the round robin went.
    Group A:

    1 United States 6 0 0 1 18
    2 Russia 5 1 0 1 17
    3 Sweden 5 0 1 1 16
    4 Germany 2 2 1 2 11
    5 Latvia 3 0 1 3 10
    6 Denmark 1 2 0 4 7
    7 Slovakia 0 1 2 4 4
    8 Italy 0 0 1 6 1

This group went pretty much the way it was expected to and the host Germans even got into the playoff round by finishing fourth. Latvia (coached by Bob Hartley) started hot with three straight wins but lost their final four games to just miss qualifying for the playoff round.
Germany and Latvia actually played each other on the final day of the round robin in a game that went to a shootout with Germany winning 1-0 to take the final point.

The biggest upset of the group was Germany’s 2-1 win over the United States on the tournament’s opening day.

    Group B:

    1 Canada 6 0 1 0 19
    2 Switzerland 3 2 2 0 15
    3 Czech Republic 3 2 0 2 13
    4 Finland 2 2 1 2 11
    5 France 2 2 0 3 10
    6 Norway 2 0 2 3 8
    7 Belarus 2 0 1 4 7
    8 Slovenia 0 0 1 6 1

Canada finished first in Group B as was expected entering the tournament although they did suffer an OT Loss at the hands of Switzerland. The Swiss made a big jump up to finish second in the group ahead of the Czechs and Finns.
The host France just missed out on making the playoff round by finishing one point behind Finland.

The biggest upset in the group was the already mentioned with the Swiss victory over Canada but an honourable mention should go to France’s 5-1 thumping of Finland.

Surprisingly, the US, who led the Group A division of the World Hockey Championships, has been eliminated by Finland in a 2-0 loss in the quarter-finals. This loss significantly increases Canada chances of winning the Championship.

However, Canada had a surprisingly difficult time in the quarter-final against Germany, narrowly beating them 2-1. It now meets Russia in the semi-finals.

Canada lost the gold medal game in overtime to Sweden. A short-handed Swedish goal with 20 seconds left in the second period helped Sweden achieve a tie in regulation time, enabling them to win in overtime.

For Canadian hockey players, it has never been easy to deal with a shootout loss.
And for the second time in four-and-a-half months at a major international tournament, there was Canada, once again, on the losing end of a gold-medal final shootout.
This time it was Sweden skating away with a 2-1 shootout victory to claim gold in Cologne, Germany over Ryan O'Reilly, Matt Duchene and Canada to end a bid for a third World championship in a row.
Just like the World junior final on Jan. 6, a game the United States won 5-4 thanks to a shootout, this was no way to end a championship tilt. But the International Ice Hockey Federation has settled its tournaments like this for decades and Canadians have felt the pain for decades.
