    Most Outstanding Defensive Player 2017

I won't repeat my comments on the defensive players (Elimimiam, Singleton and Gainey) I mentioned in the Most Outstanding Player thread. Bear Woods also deserves some consideration. Although his 65 defensive tackles don't match the stats put up by Elimimian and Singleton, he, along with Marcus Ball, has anchored the Argo defence that was extremely weak last year. However, with Elimimian and Singleton coming close to a record pace in DTs, I think it will be between them. Other things being equal, I think Singleton is the more likely winner since Calgary has given up 97 points fewer than BC and 72 points less than the second lowest scored upon defence (Saskatchewan's which has played one game less than Calgary). His three most recent games have all involved double digit tackles, thereby increasing his recognition and building momentum as the season wears on. Also being the new kid in town may work to his advantage as some might want to recognize someone who hasn't won the award, unlike Elimimian.

After Week 18, Elimimian who has 128 total tackles has put some distance between himself and second place Alex Singleton, who has 115. At this rate, Elimimian would break his total tackles record of 143 by one tackle. Since his current record helped Solomon win the MOP in 2014, barring injury, it seems he will be the odds-on-favourite to win the Most Outstanding Defensive Player award. Ed Gainey has added another interception for a total of nine, but I don't think this will be enough to overtake Elimimian. Despite missing a game in week 16 against the Riders, Bear Woods still ranks fifth in total tackles with 86, a highly commendable performance but not likely to win him an award in light of Elimimian's and Singleton's performance. If Singleton wins, it will be in recognition of being the leader of the least scored upon defence in the league.

The tackles stat can be misleading IMO. Having a high number of tackles may also mean that your defence is on the field a lot, which may be the case with the Lions.

IMO the top defensive player in the West this year is not Elimimian. Singleton, Leggett and Gainey are probably all more deserving. I think Singleton will win it.

If Singleton wins Most Outstanding Canadian, should he give the trophy to his mom?

He shouldn't be eligible to win it IMO. Or they should rename it Most Outstanding National. Unless an actual Canadian always wins the award, what's the point of having it?

Yes, really takes away the true meaning of the award.

More like a consolation award at time anyways; seems to me their were times in the past that a Canadian player could have been MOP (of the season or a GC game) but they gave it to an import and the Canadian guy could/should be happy/grateful he got the Most Outstanding Canadian award.

I'd rather see a separate MOP awards for offence, defence (so rare they get recognized as MOP over offensive players) and special teams (plus still a best O-lineman award since they never get considered for MOP), plus rookie of the year. No need for an outstanding Canadian award really IMO - but I would like to see a CFL player award for a Canadian player who has played his entire career in Canadian football (so Singleton or Ben Cahoon types don\'t qualify).

These are all good ideas. (What is happening? We are agreeing with each other!)
