Former Argo Swayze Waters Signs With Eskimos

Former Argo Swayze Waters has signed with the Eskimos. After leaving the Argos following the 2015 season, he was cut by the Panthers in 2016. After signing with BC this year, he was injured (sounds familiar). When his replacement, Ty Long, did well, Waters was cut by the Lions in July for salary and his tendency to be injured. Although he won the league's Most Outstanding Player Special Teams Player in 2014 as an Argo while leading the league in FGs, points and punting average and could be a big asset for the Eskimos if healthy, that's a big if considering his injury history.

Is Sean Whyte out for the season? If not, a bit surprising that Waters would take a job that he likely won't have in a couple of weeks. Waters had 1 really good year with the Argos. I found him to be very inconsistent the rest of his time here, especially on FG's. Might have been the injuries, or 2014 might have just been a year where everything went right for him.

Personally, I am very happy to hear that Swayze has caught on with another team. I always liked him as a player, and as a person he came across as a genuinely decent and unique individual. The injury bug has been his Achilles heel, but I wish him well in his latest comeback attempt. Have to admire his desire to play and compete.

While Waters FG kicking has varied considerably from season to season, his punting average has always been high. In fact after 269 punts, his career average (46.9 yards) is higher than anyone who has an 500 punts in CFL history. Damon Duval leads those punters with an average of 45.8 yards.

I'm not a fan. Yes he has a very strong leg, and punting average can be impressive, but to be honest, I think his punting was highly overrated. Every one of his punts went straight down the middle of the field, and as a result, the Argos were burned for huge returns regularly. In today's game of field position, a punter needs to get the ball between the numbers and the sidelines.

Good signing for them. He has a lot of potential and they have really struggled in the secondary this year.

A good sign when other teams are signing guys we don't have room for. Especially when it's direct competition. It alludes to the improved talent & depth at a position this team struggled with for a couple/three seasons.
