    Trump and Sports Protests

Colin Kaepernick's taking a knee last year in snowballing into protests against Trump and his comments on athletes who protest his policies and comments. On Friday Trump said to his followers at a rally "Get that son of a b____ off the field. He's fired! He's fired!". Trump called for NFL owners to fire players who take a knee during the national anthem. His tweet withdrawing an invitation to Stephen Curry of the NBA champion Golden State Warriors because Curry said he wouldn't go to the White House as a protest against Trump. NFL owners, seven of whom gave Trump's election campaign at least $1,000,000, now have a problem beyond denying Kaepernick the opportunity to play in the NFL, because 70% of NFL players are African American.
In the NBA, which has an even higher percentage of African Americans, LeBron James has called Trump a "bum" in response to Trump's comments about Curry.

Responding to Trump's attacks on football players who protested during the national anthem, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said on Saturday Trump's statements revealed "unfortunate lack of respect" for the NFL and its players.

Goodell's statement was released a day after Trump suggested any protesting football player was a "son of a bitch" and should lose his job.
"Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now ... He is fired'," Trump said on Friday at a rally for Alabama Senate Republican candidate Luther Strange.
Trump said in Twitter messages later on Saturday that, if NFL players wanted "the privilege" of high salaries, they "should stand for the National Anthem. If not, YOU'RE FIRED. Find something else to do!" ...

As commissioner, Goodell reports to NFL owners, some of whom have supported Trump in the past. New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, a major Trump presidential campaign donor, was confirmed by the Senate last month as Trump's pick to serve as U.S. ambassador to Britain.
The union representing professional football players also rejected Trump's comments, saying it would defend their right to freedom of expression. ...

NBA players also struck back against comments by the president on Saturday.
In an early morning Twitter message on Saturday, the president rescinded a White House invitation to basketball star Stephen Curry, who had said he would "vote" against the planned visit by the NBA champion Golden State Warriors.
"Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team. Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn!" Trump tweeted.
Curry told a news conference in Oakland, California: "It's beneath the leader of a country to go that route."
"It's not what leaders do," he said. ...
LeBron James came to Curry's defense, disputing Trump's assertion that visiting the White House was an honor.

"Going to White House was a great honor until you showed up!" James, a prominent supporter of Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential elections, said on Twitter. ...

Singer Stevie Wonder appeared to evoke protests by Kaepernick and other athletes when he put one knee to the stage during a concert at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City on Saturday.
"Tonight, I'm taking a knee for America," Wonder told the audience as his son, Kwame Morris, helped him down.

On Saturday the protests spread to Major League Baseball when the catcher of the Oakland Athletics, Bruce Maxwell, also took a knee during the national anthem.

Numerous other protests among NFL players against Trump's comments have occurred today, including in New England, Buffalo, Charlotte and Indianapolis. The owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Shad Khan who is the only non-white owner in the NFL, held arms with his players in support of the protests while the owner of the New England Patriots criticized the tone of Trump's comments on the protests.
The hypocrisy of the owners, who now start protesting when they realize their profits are in jeopardy as the protests mushroom, is that Colin Kaepernick is still without a job when he is better than at least one third of NFL QBs.

Trump's insulting comments about players in the NFL taking a knee while the American national anthem has now provoked a response in the CFL.

Though players from both the Calgary Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders stood for the Canadian anthem prior to their game in Regina, the Riders locked arms in a show of solidarity.
Many players voiced their support for their football brethren south of the border after Calgary’s 15-9 victory.
“It’s sad and it’s disheartening to me as an American to see our president getting in bickering matches with people on Twitter, calling out athletes saying they should be fired,” said Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell. “I’m glad we’re all uniting against that and I hope we take a stand against something that is unacceptable.” ...

Roughriders quarterback Kevin Glenn took to Twitter Saturday morning and voiced his opinion on the issue.
Glenn tweeted: “#trump is the disrecptful (sic) one, he should be fired #trumpisabean.”
Riders offensive lineman Derek Dennis was one of the players that locked arms.
“We wanted to show solidarity and show that we understand what’s going on back home,” he said. “We didn’t do this to disrespect the Canadian flag or its Armed Forces because this country has given us an opportunity to play football, the game we love. We just wanted to show our support for what is going on back home.
“Being a kid from New York City… I was attacked by a bunch of undercover detectives who just messed with me just because they could. I’ve been through it and I understand what’s going on.”

According to The Associated Press, approximately 130 NFL players either took to a knee or sat during the Star-Spangled Banner during the league’s first nine games on Sunday.
The Pittsburgh Steelers elected to remain in the tunnel while the anthem was sung.
“It’s more about unity than anything else,” said Calgary’s Charleston Hughes. “This is about being united as brothers to stand up for one another. It’s not just about the NFL or just about the CFL. It’s about standing up for what is right and showing support.”

The Riders have issued a statement in support of their players protests of Trump's comments.

President Donald Trump’s comments about owners firing players who kneel during the national anthem sparked a mass increase in such protests around the National Football League Sunday, as more than 130 players sat, knelt or raised their fists in defiance during early games.

Kansas City Chiefs Caucasian QB Alex Smith said he wasn't happy talking about "this kind of stuff", but then went on to comment:

“I’m talking about the comments that were made by the president, targeting the NFL, targeting the quality and character of guys in this league for that very protest. I found that very alarming.
“It’s the same guy who couldn’t condemn violent neo-Nazis. And he’s condemning guys taking a knee during the anthem.
“There are bigger issues out there that he probably should be worried about. But for some reason the NFL is on his mind.”

CNN is reporting that from Friday to Monday, Trump tweeted about the NFL and the national anthem sixteen times, health care twice, taxes once, while making zero tweets on the North Korean crisis and the Puerto Rican hurricane catastrophe involving 3.5 million American citizens. Its good to know that he's got people focused on the most important global issues, not on these insignificant problems on which he has accomplished nothing. But maybe that's the strategy.
While Sidney Crosby has said it is a great honour to be invited to the White House as Stanley Cup Champions of the NHL, and the also predominantly Caucasian NASCAR received an invitation as well, others in the NHL and other leagues took a different view. Despite demands by Trump that players who do not stand for the National Anthem be fired, Raptors president Masai Ujiri proclaimed no one on the Toronto team is getting fired for such protests.

“Our country is an embarrassment to the world,” said San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, never one for holding his tongue. Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal suggested that Trump was acting like “a clown.” LeBron James said that one person did not run the United States, “and damn sure not him.” ...
DeMar DeRozan of the Raptors said Trump brought much of this on himself. “You’ve got your president on Twitter more than a 12-year-old saying the most outrageous things,” he said.
DeRozan, who grew up in a rough part of Los Angeles, said the issues that started this whole controversy — Colin Kaepernick taking a knee during the national anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality — are important to address. He remembers being afraid to look police officers in the eye “because you didn’t want to be questioned.” He said he had friends who were at his home one day, and killed by police later that week.“Even now, I drive a nice car and I’m still being questioned: ‘How you get this car?’” ...
Hockey players were speaking out on Monday, too, with Blake Wheeler saying in Winnipeg that he had enough of Trump’s rhetoric and teammate Matt Hendricks saying while he wouldn’t kneel during the anthem, he would respect those who did. “It’s not just the flag,” he said. “For the others that choose to take a knee, it’s a different reason.”There was a lot of that, too, including Toronto’s Auston Matthews, who said he felt kneeling was disrespectful to the military but he understood free speech was protected by “one of those amendments.”

Last night, African American JT Brown of the Tampa Bay Lightning became the first player during the regular season of the NHL to protest police brutality during the American national anthem when he raised his fist during the anthem to show also his solidarity with others protesting Trump's demands that these players be fired. Brown, the son of former NFL RB Ted Brown, had already raised his fist over these issues during preseason games. Teammates have said they support his protest. Two Canadian Blacks, Wayne Simmonds of the Flyers and Joel Ward of the Sharks have spoken out on these issues but have not taken any action.

With Trump's poll approval of his job numbers dropping from 42% in March to 35% in June to 32% this month according to an Associated Press poll (http://thehill.com/homenews/administ...its-32-percent), he is ginning up the national anthem sports protests issue as a diversion and an attempt to keep at least his core base on side.

Yesterday, VP Mike Pence walked out of the SF 49ers Indianapolis Colts game in an effort to further divide the two sides of the issue and keep his core supporters angry. Pence had advised reporters in advance to remain in their van as he did not expect to be staying long at the game. As safety Eric Reid of the 49 ers said, this was a PR stunt. Trump himself confirmed this when he said the walkout was planned.

President Trump said Vice President Pence is getting “great praise” for walking out of an NFL game after some San Francisco 49ers’ players kneeled during the national anthem and acknowledged the trip was “long planned.”
“The trip by @VP Pence was long planned. He is receiving great praise for leaving game after the players showed such disrespect for country!,” Trump wrote on Twitter on Monday.
    http://nypost.com/2017/10/09/trump-a...football-game/

Count San Francisco 49ers safety Eric Reid among those unhappy with Vice President Mike Pence's actions on Sunday..
After Pence left the Indianapolis Colts' game against the 49ers minutes after 23 San Francisco players kneeled for the national anthem, Reid said he believed the series of events was an orchestrated effort.
"This looks like a PR stunt to me," Reid said of Pence's exit. "He knew we had the most players protest. He knew that we were probably going to do it again. And so, this is what systemic oppression looks like. A man with power comes to the game, tweets a couple things out and leaves the game, with an attempt to thwart our efforts."

The protests have now spread to Europe and soccer, with an entire Berlin soccer team taking the knee.

A Berlin-based soccer team knelt before a game on Saturday. Both players and officials of Hertha Berlin got down on one knee prior to the game "For a tolerant Berlin and an open-minded world, now and forevermore!" according to a tweet by the team.
"We are living in the 21st century, not the 18th century, but there are some people who haven't developed their ideologies accordingly," one of the the teams players, Sebastian Langkamp, told Sky Sports in an interview, according to the BBC. "If we can give them a bit of help in doing so, then that's good."
The gesture, which NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick started in 2016 when he knelt during the playing of the national anthem prior to a game, was originally a protest over how the US, and particularly the police, treats black people and people of color.
The protest's spread to Europe is just another symptom of the spotlight placed on the gesture after President Donald Trump made it a signature issue, telling a crowd in Arizona in September that any player that kneels in the NFL should be fired.
