3Down Article on the Athletic and Argo relationship

Interesting take on the Argos "relationship" with the Athletic in a 3downnation.com article by Drew Edwards.
If the insinuation is the Argonauts are buying favourable press with the Athletic by offering trial subscriptions to season ticket holders it doesn't seem to be working.
Argonaut coverage by the Athletic is very modest (at best).
Not really sure what the difference when a team such as the Hamilton Tiger Cats advertise with the local newspaper, could that not buy them favourable coverage in exchange for the teams advertising $$.
    Sometimes the Argonauts can't win.

So what does Drew think about the CBC?

If no one is willing to cover the Argos then who cares if the Argos buy subscriptions. I think it's a good idea in the long term if Argo fans buy into the Athletic in order for them to keep writing stories or even try hiring a full time beat writer. Edwards is making this a bigger story than it is IMO.

Also, NHL teams are starting to hire their own writers like Lawless going to Vegas, rather than relying on local media. So what's the big deal?

Agreed. The number of Argonaut articles has certainly dwindled lately. I see stories on every other Toronto team almost daily. Really disappointing after a good start. As far as the suggestion that Argos are somehow buying favourable press, I think every team does that just from buying ads in papers, etc. I'm sure if Argos had a controversy big enough to report on, The Athletic and every other outlet would report on it.

This doesn't seem much different than 3DownNation / the Hamilton Spectator and their relationships with the Ticats.

Until the Athletic puts up a series of GIF's claiming the Argos were screwed by officiating as Drew Edwards did when the Argos beat the Ti-Cats, he really should shut the hell up.

LOL, so true! As a Niagara resident, it's easy to keep up to date on the Cats and Edwards is one of the biggest homers around. I'm actually cool with that, I like my Argos biased reporters too, but kettle/pot going on here.

Lol! You should make that comment on the article on 3downnation and see if he responds.

And to be honest, they have wrote articles about attendance issues, ways to turn it around, practice facility challenges. While criticism may not be as prevalent, it's not like the Athletic are homers and overly positive like Jays reporters.

I was very excited about adding the Athletic to my desktop favourites. It has long since been replaced.

I thought it was pretty cool that the Argos got two paragraphs in the "failing" New York Times. Probably more than we've had in either the Star or the Globe in a while. ;-)
