Here's a great detailed article on how Jim Popp, working with Marc Trestman, built the Argos up from a shambles to Eastern division finalist.

Win or lose Sunday, Popp, Trestman and the Argonaut staff have done a nice job in turning this program around.
A full offseason should only help.
First things first let’s take take of business this Sunday and get to the Grey Cup game.

Also wanted to put in a good word for the 2017 Asst. Coaches that were put together.
Chamblin has done a good job with the much-upgraded talent level delivered to him on D.
It's an essential thing to bring in more talented D-men, but the DC has got to mold them into a unit that
gets the system, cares for each other, and has each other's back.
I have seen that in 2017, but sure did not in 2016 (remember 568 points allowed?
Or put another way, over 30 pts.-per-game allowed...sorry to make you gag, Argo fans. bad memories).
C Greenwood and R Foley were great guys, but just were not doing the job in 2016, along with others.
Greenwood when healthy was playing well, Greenwood's problem is he doesn't stay healthy for long.
Full credit has to go to Popp and Trestman for what they've done in short order, and with them coming in late.
A special thank you to Kavis Reed as well.

Yep - dumb-@$$ Mavis gifting the Argos Green & Woods was huge; as was the return of ex-Argos Ball & Laing to the fold; lots of other good signings - like Murray, Vaughn; and finding new to the CFL top notch players like Butler, Wynn, Wilder. Plenty of stuff aligned nicely.
CFL teams can be re-built to play-off status in one year = easily do-able IMO - sign good FAs, draft smartly (though that was not a factor for this Argo team much). Not for clueless clowns like Mavis Reed though - the Als are in big trouble IMO. The Ticats with June Jones seem to be going in the right direction - they had some good talent, but added some good new players as well - and coaching smarts is not to be over-looked here and maybe the biggest factor. The Argos got proven CFL winner Trestman and the addition of a new O-line coach seemed to help lots; June Jones is a veteran pro coach (with some familiarity with the CFL).
