They used to sing the anthem at the movies? I've literally never heard of this. I'm only 27 so that definitely pre-dates my time by a long shot lol

I think they stopped in the late 60's or early 70's. Being born in '68, I don't remember it either, but I know it was a thing.

They used to play the national anthem when CFTO signed off for the night.

That I do remember. I think most channels are now showing some sort of programming all night long now, and no longer signing off.

Yeah, many stations would show Greg Joy making his silver-medal winning high jump at the 1976 Montreal Olympics in the video accompanying the anthem.

    Did Joy qualify as a non-import ?

Here's what he actually said: "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."
I call double shenanigans. I'm glad you stopped short of calling Kaepernick uppity, but you need to know there is tons of evidence of systemic racism in the U.S and in Canada too. This article for example summarizes the highlights of 18 different studies on the subject. Most thinking, feeling people know that systemic racism is real and are appalled by it.

I don't, but then again I don't suffer from white guilt so I guess that makes me unthinking and unfeeling towards those who choose to play the victim role.

So Kaepernick indicts a country (see the quote) and not some individuals and paints everybody with the brush of racism. Anybody who calls someone a racist without evidence is an ahole because that's one of the most heinous things you can do in today's identity politics fueled society. I'd love to see the 90 whatever percent of good cops just say enough is enough and go on strike and let these guys fend for themselves. I don't know why anyone would want that job today, with the little support they get.

Frankly I could care less what goes on down there, I'm more worried about what's going on here. The incident at WLU hopefully will expose some of the craziness that abounds at our universities. There was a time controversy and debate were welcomed on campuses, not anymore.

There's plenty of evidence of systemic racism, I guess we need to find a word for those who refuse to acknowledge it.

So when they rioted in Baltimore what system was racist? Was it the majority black police force, black city council, black mayor, black US attorney general, black President, just wonderin'. They got one f'ed up society down there and there's plenty of blame to go around on all sides.

I think it's about time this thread closed, as it's clearly gone off the rails.

    Yep.
You wanna discuss systemic racism in the United States. Use the lounge or PM and not a thread meant to celebrate the Grey Cup victory.
