Facing a choice of one year contracts from the Riders and Bombers, Adarius Bowman picked Winnipeg after being earlier released by the Eskimos, who thereby avoided paying him a $140,000 bonus.

After going more than three weeks without signing a potential free agent, Montreal has finally announced the resigning of National left tackle Phil Blake for $190,000, as the free agency deadline rapidly approaches. While Blake is a valuable Canadian starter who spent three years in the NFL before signing with the Als in 2015 who drafted him in 2011, he played in only 9 games last year due to injury after not missing a game in his first two years with the Als. So far Tyrell Sutton is the only "name" potential free agent signed by the Als, reflecting the fact that many management, coaches and players have been glad to get out of the mess in Montreal over the last year. The Als are likely also going to have trouble adding quality players once free agency hits.

With so many free agents available across the league, teams, including the Argos, may be able to pick up some talented players at reasonable salaries if they wait past the original signing flurry.

If last year was any indication, it becomes a buyer's market no later than the third day past free agency.

The limited talent available on 3downnation's QB list as free agency nears is a reflection of the trades and signings that have already occurred. Furthermore, the most talented QB by far on the list, Ricky Ray, has now signed. In addition, Dan LeFevour has retired, although that is likely in part due to little interest in him by other teams after the Bombers told him to explore free agency. The most talented remaining QB, Travis Lulay, has major questions about his health and whether he can long sustain the punishment a QB gets. Drew Willy ranks ahead of Cody Fajardo simply because of his experience, although Fajardo could turn out to be a good QB if he can find a team that gives him sustained playing time.

Jerome Messam and Brandon Whitaker are the two big name players on the list but both are old for a RB at 32. However, even a Messam whose career is winding down would still be difficult to mess with and the best available but at what price? Whitaker's 357 yards in limited action show he can still be a respectable RB who can also block and catch passes. Roy Finch is on the list and is the best player but with his league leading talent as a returner, no one is likely going to use him primarily as a RB. While Shakir Bell and Kienan Lafrance were released by the Riders on the same day, only Bell is on the list, a big error, as after Messam, Lafrance is the best Canadian RB available. Bell, White and Van are all 25-26 and displayed talent but have had trouble staying healthy.

The lists of National and International receivers by 3downnation is also substantially out of date with four of their top six receivers (Green, Spencer, Posey and Hazelton) already signed as well as Canadian receiver Devon Bailey. In addition there are rumours that the top ranked Canadian Demski will sign with the Bombers, while Tasker and Hamilton are close to a deal. Of those still available I'd rank Tasker as the best, followed by Daniels among the Americans. However, even at 32 and 31, I'd rank Denmark and Moore ahead of Criner, Fuller and Collins. Among the Canadians available, Anthony Parker dropped 200 yards in receptions and still led all the others on the list and he's still only 28 so I'd rank him first. Nic Demski next who is only 24 and has lots of promise comes next IMO. I'd put Jake Harty (27) followed by Feoli Gudino (30), who had the best year of his career in 2017, ahead of the aging Cory Watson (33).

Hamilton has taken one of the top potential free agents off the market by extending Luke Tasker through 2019, which I suggested was likely yesterday. With Brandon Banks, Jalen Saunders, and Terrance Tolliver who is returning from injury, as well as Shamawd Chambers, who gained almost 300 yards in 7 games after being traded by Edmonton to the Ticats, the Ticats will have a formidable receiving corps.

After focusing on resigning nearly all of their offensive potential free agents, the RedBlacks have resigned only their second defensive possible free agent in DB Jonathan Rose (previously they had signed DB Jean-Philippe Bolduc). Unless they extend more quickly the Ottawa defence is likely to feature a lot of new faces.

The QB who has displayed the most talent among the remaining free agent QBs is now gone as an option for teams seeking to improve their QB depth with the extension of Travis Lulay by BC for the 2018 season.
