As the following article emphasizes, the history of high profile US college QBs coming to the CFL does not bode well for Manziel. That includes the Argos' Michael Bishop, who was drafted ahead of Tom Brady by the New England Patriots.

I believe many casual sports fans are under the impression that the transition from being a star quarterback in America to being a legitimate starter in the CFL is an easy one. They often draw a fairly straight and clear line from both sides of the border; I mean, if you can dominate in the football factory that is the United States, then why not in this nine-team league in a nation with one tenth the population?
The truth is that reality does not exist. Hell, even in his first year, Flutie struggled on a 6-11-1 fourth-place BC Lions team. Doug would complete a career low 53 per cent of his passes as 1990 would also represent the only year in which he would throw more interceptions than touchdowns.

A year later, we all witnessed the rise of one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play in this league as Flutie threw for a ridiculous 6,619 yards, ran for 610 more yards and accounted for 52 total touchdowns in leading the Lions to a 11-7 record and a playoff berth as he earned All-CFL honours at quarterback. The point is that even the great Doug Flutie, who won a Heisman with Boston College and started 13 games in the NFL, took a year to adjust to this game.
What makes Doug Flutie’s storied career so remarkable is just how incredibly unique it was. ...

There have been other Heisman winners to make a go of it in Canada and none of them made much of an impact in the CFL. In 1995, Andre Ware, who set a boatload of NCAA records with the University of Houston, signed with the Ottawa Rough Riders. Ware played for three different teams in three years and was out of the league after 1997.
Next up was in 2006 with Eric Crouch, who dominated at the University of Nebraska and, upon graduating, was one of just three quarterbacks in Division 1-A history to amass more than 3,000 yards rushing and 4,000 yards passing. Clearly, Crouch was designed for the wide open CFL, right? Nope. Crouch spent his brief time battling as a fourth-string quarterback for the Argonauts before succumbing to injuries and being released by the team in September of 2007.
Finally there was Ohio State star Troy Smith, who in 2006 won just about every award a collegiate player could win, including the Heisman. Smith dominated at one of the highest-profile schools in America. Oh sure he was a little under-sized, which hurt his NFL career, but a guy who had produced and played in so many big games would of course have no problem transitioning to the CFL. He would last only two years with the Montreal Alouettes who, in 2014, deemed that Alex Brink gave the team a better chance to win than Smith. ...
But the story of prominent quarterbacks failing north of the border is not limited to Heisman winners. Cleo Lemon had three years of NFL experience but lasted just two seasons with Toronto. Way back in 1990, Timm Rosenbach was the only quarterback in the NFL to take every offensive snap that year. Do you remember his time in this league? Yeah, neither do I. Duron Carter attempted one more pass (one) than Vince Young did with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. ...

Finally, the big-time NCAA quarterback who most recently (2002-09) has experienced the greatest “success” was Michael Bishop. Bishop had a spectacular career at Kansas State and did appear in 125 games in the CFL, the majority of which were spent with the Argonauts. But even Bishop was a below average passer, barely completing half of his passes and finishing with 11 more interceptions than touchdowns. ...

So what does the profile of a successful CFL quarterback look like? I looked back at the origin stories of some of the biggest current stars (Bo Levi Mitchell, Mike Reilly and Ricky Ray) and two future Hall of Famers (Henry Burris and Anthony Calvillo) and their backgrounds are all eerily similar. All played in small Division I or more prominent lower Division NCAA schools where they all were given a chance to flourish as passers. Many of these quarterbacks still hold passing records at their respective schools.
Of course, most people have no idea of these past accomplishments as most fans do not closely follow such prominent football programs as Eastern Washington, Central Washington, Sacramento State University, Temple or Utah State University. I don’t recall seeing any of them in the College Football Playoffs. None of these CFL All-Stars were drafted; most bounced around a couple of NFL camps and only Burris ever attempted a pass in the NFL. ...
As for immediate impact, Ricky Ray is the only one who had a dramatic impact right away. Ray would lead the Edmonton Eskimos to the Grey Cup in his rookie year in 2002, eventually losing 26-16 to Montreal. But even then Ray entered training camp as the third stringer and needed an injury to Jason Maas to propel his early success.

The old Johnny is back as the following article with video shows. Can the league afford Johnny (and I'm not talking money)?

The latest instalment of the Johnny Manziel Comeback SZN™ social media campaign – otherwise known as Tone Deaf 2018 – features the controversial quarterback rapping the lyrics from repeat domestic abuser Chris Brown while rocking his soon-to-be released Comeback SZN™ hoodies.
Manziel also appears to be back to his late-night ways. The two short videos were posted to his Instagram story early Thursday morning and feature Manziel singing along with two Brown songs in what appears to be a limo. ...

It then cuts to Manziel rapping “No Exit” from the same Heartbreak on a Full Moon album.
“There really ain’t no exit for me. So don’t be worried by my ex-chick, I know that you heard them stories…”
The optics of this are awful. Brown has a long history of domestic violence and the line from “No Exit” feels like a reference to Manziel’s former girlfriend Colleen Crowley, with whom he was charged with hitting and threatening in January 2016. He reached a dismissal agreement that required him to complete an anger management class, attend a domestic violence impact panel and participate in a substance-abuse program.
Add the hawking of the hoodies, the late-night posts, the limo ride and the outrageous contract demands… it hardly inspires confidence that Manziel sees the Comeback SZN™ as some kind of redemption effort – more like the same old story.
Oh, and Manziel told a fan on Twitter that “Money Manziel” is making a return as well and added a #MoneySZN hashtag.

This might be might a stretch. Limos and rapping isn't the worst thing he's done.

Its not the rapping. It's the connotations associated with singing with domestic abuser Chris Brown and singing a song that about an ex-girlfriend when you yourself have been charged with domestic abuse, while looking possibly a little blotto when you have had alcohol and drug problems. All this, soon after the Commissioner gave him another chance to play football because he had appeared to be following the conduct guidelines set out for him in order to play in the CFL. Does it mean he will automatically get into serious trouble subsequently if he does sign a CFL contract? No. But it does raise major concerns and if he does blow this opportunity, there will be a lot of people questioning the CFL's judgement on this.
In addition, with women becoming increasingly vocal on abuse issues, this hardly helps the league expand its base in that direction.

Any CFL team (Hamilton) would be best to simply walk away from this guy, total train wreck from both a team chemistry and PR standpoint.

Hamilton, in particular, should be extremely wary of signing Manziel after going through the coach Art Briles fiasco. He had been fired because of his alleged coverup of sex scandals by his players at Baylor University the year before. To counter the resulting bad PR, the Tiger Cats joined the "Be more than a Bystander" campaign on violence against women and even had Nancy Smith, who is the executive director of Interval House (for battered women), introduced to the crowd at half-time in a September home game last year. She thanked the club and said the Hamilton "Be more than a Bystander" would be modelled on the one started by the BC Lions in 2011 that now has six CFL teams participating in. Wally Buono has said he fully supports the campaign because he saw his own mother attacked in their own home. Therefore, in addition to negative fan reaction, I strongly suspect that many players would not be keen to be playing with Manziel because they had to deal with similar situations in their lives.

After a "disappointing" period where they hired a coach accused of covering up sexual assault, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have joined a program designed to discourage violence against women. The Ticats announced Thursday that they've joined "Be More Than a Bystander" program. It's a joint effort with Interval House of Hamilton, which offers shelter and support for abused women. ...
Through the program, the team will record a series of public service announcements that will air at 2018 Ticats games, among other venues. They'll also go to high schools in February 2018, and host thousands of high school students next spring. ...
Briles was fired as head coach at Baylor University last year in the wake of a sexual assault scandal. In a recently settled lawsuit, a woman alleged knowledge of at least 52 acts of rape by more than 30 football players while Briles was head coach. The Ticats hired Briles, only to rescind the offer less than 24 hours later after community and fan backlash. Ticats CEO Scott Mitchell acknowledged the Briles controversy Thursday. Mitchell said it was a misstep. ...
It took a while to work out the program with Interval House, Mitchell said, because the team wanted to make sure it could adequately commit to it.
Nancy Smith, Interval House executive director, said Thursday's announcement is "not really about Art Briles." "This is about a societal shift, about how we all need to be aware and mindful of our behaviour and the influence it can have, particularly on women and girls."
The team also pledged to include Be More Than a Bystander in its current community programs. That includes incorporating it into an annual Coaches Clinic, which hosted 80 coaches this year.

he Hamilton nominee for the Jake Gaudaur Trophy, which is given in part for contributions to one's community, was Courtney Stephen, who was the Hamilton nominee in part because he was "the face of the Ticats' 'Be More Than a Bystander' campaign with Interval House and trained to speak at schools" about the issue.

Courtney Stephen, Justin Vaughn and Terrell Davis along with Ticats Alumni, Mike Morreale. There are four main components of the team’s ‘Be More Than a Bystander’ (BMTAB) campaign set to launch in 2018, which will be co-ordinated in ongoing consultation with Interval House of Hamilton’s MentorAction:
Community awareness campaign: A series of public service announcements and customized content from BMTAB-trained Ticats representatives to be shared across team-controlled distribution channels throughout the 2018 season,
‘Be More Than a Bystander’ month — February 2018: This extensive, month-long awareness campaign will incorporate a number of initiatives, including school visits
‘Be More Than a Bystander’ Day at Tim Hortons Field — spring 2018: In conjunction with the Hamilton District School Board, the Tiger-Cats will organize an outdoor field trip to Tim Hortons Field to engage thousands of high school students
Amplify current Tiger-Cats community programs with BMTAB elements

Do the Tiger Cats and the league want to squander this positive PR by risking the signing of Manziel?

I am not seeing much evidence on social media, at least, that Manziel has matured at all. Anyway, he is Hamilton's problem for now and may become Montreal's. I certainly have no interest in seeing him in Toronto and can't see Trestman being the least bit interested.

James Franklin vs Johnny Manziel. Talk about polar opposites. I’m sure Trestman has his QB that displays humility, politeness, and is teachable. All qualities that I question if Manziel has even one. This has “Crash and “Burn” written all over it. Unfortunate really, because he had/has some great skill. He certainly fits his MO.

Whether or not there's football in Johnny Football's future is entirely up to him. Thankfully, P&T signed, sealed and delivered James Franklin, and Mr. Football is the high-wire reclamation project of some other potential employer.

Good luck. The fact that Mr. Football is already financially secure (if that condition lasts) does not help the odds.

Mr. Football maybe financially secure now, but the sports world is full of former players who dwindled their earnings and are now enduring tough times. I hope Manziel does not join this list. He could, if he gets his head on straight and changes agents, have a very, very nice career in Canada.
