And the Bombers want it back. Rots of Ruck. In a sport where players are often cut just before they are due a bonus, one could say what goes around, comes around, whether fair or not.

Not that I am defending the owners, but in a way they are right. ?When they cut a player in March before a bonus, technically that player hasn't played yet. If a player gets a bonus in March of 2018, that is part of his 2018 salary. So basically no pay, but also no services rendered. When a player takes the bonus and retires, he's taking pay for no services rendered. I think legally, the owners have a case here.

Not surprised, Durant wants to be the guy and paid like one, so him being the back up wouldn't have lasted long IMO. Not surprised about him taking the money and running either, from what been said over the years about Durant, no one should be surprised.

Rod Pedersen interviews Darian Durant below about his decision to retire. Durant says he deserves the $70,000 bonus but refused to comment further on this issue.

He might deserve it from someone, but not from a team in which he never represented. Had he played for them last year, I would say sure, no problem. But to take a signing bonus from a team you have never worked for, and then just quit, and expect to keep that money is wrong.

I guess Darius looks on the bonus as kind of a golden handshake. There are probably more than a few players cheering for him thinking of all the guys that are cut just before their bonus is due. Teams call that "just part of the business". But it's different when the shoe's on the other foot.

Isn't the first time and won't be the last time someone does this!

Well, someone on Twitter did point out that this is likely to be something dealt with in CBA negotiations.

Teams do it to players all the time, so forgive me if I don't feel bad for the GM's and Owners when the tables have turned.

Durant did nothing he's not entitled to do under the CBA, just as teams are entitled to release guys rather than pay their bonuses. This might very well be discussed in the next round of bargaining but I'll be surprised if either side surrenders the rights they currently have. Teams still have the hammer -- they can make bonuses contingent on making the roster rather than on signing. Or stop offering bonuses that aren't tied in some way to performance.

Problem withDurant is that the team found out when the fans did, on social media. Poor move there.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

    This.

But IMO this also makes Walters look like a fool - desperate enough to sign an "experienced" QB, even after Durant looked like a useless scrub most of last season with the Als - he was just brutal a lot of the time - so why give him a non-refundable bonus just for signing? = because you are a clueless putz of a GM; bonus could have been for games dressed or played = make the guy earn it.
