A 1,000+ yard receiving 2015 CIS season for a 6'5" 200 lb WR, a 2016 academically ineligible season, part of a season in the Arena League, attendance at Cincinnati Bengal TC, a positive drug test earning one a four game NFL suspension and having one's CFL draft moved back one year, two years in the Canadian Junior Football League, impressive Combine scores but questions about his fitness make Rashaun Simonise's draft position an intriguing question mark.

    Brown and Cherry

There are several CIS all-star O-linemen who could be rated as high as any of those NCAA Canuck O-linemen: Shepley; Ciraco & Sceviour from the Dinos - both CIS all-stars); Pickett (Guelph), plus David Brown (CIS 1st team all-star at OT for the powerhouse Western offence last season), Mark Korte (Alberta - drew some good reviews at the US Shrine game) or Keiler Cherry (2 time AUS all-star at OT for Acadia); both Brown & Cherry are not going to the CFL Combine this weekend despite the fact both have made this year's CFL's Scouting Bureau's Top 20 lists ??? - like to know why? - maybe they are injured or else have told the CFL they have no interest in pro ball ? And 3 time (!) AUS all-star OG Jacob Czaja - with pro size and a petty decent bench # did not advance to the main Combine from the East regional ? ; neither did AUS all-star OT Mathew Ouellet-Decarlo (Bishops) who has 6-4, 315 size ?- only 2 AUS players going to the main Combine ? = CFL types might have little respect for top players from that weaker CIS Conference ?

Article by Dunk gives you all you need to know about why Brown has seemingly disappeared from the draft discussion. Even though he has fallen off the list and Ferguson doesn't have him on any mocks, don't be surprised to see Brown drafted this year.

As for Cherry, I have heard that he suffered an injury as well.

Actually, Junk's article hardly gives me all the info i need - other than he suffered an injury in the Vanier (which i had already heard on another fan forum) - but what took Junk or another draft "guru" like Ferguson all this time to mention him, and what is his injury status (expected to recover? devastating injury where he might not be able to play football again?); and why have neither of these supposed "experts" mentioned Brown (arguably would have been top 5 rated in this deep O-line crop) or Cherry (was #17 on the initial CFL Scouting Bureau) in any of their lots of chances draft talk ?

CFL draft reporting has IMO took a step backwards with these 2 lightweights in charge of much of the info & opinion. Duane Forde was 10x better when he cared or was given the space; and Rids (who has posted on various CFL fan forums including here I believe) used to have a site about young Canadian football talent that had draft features - not sure if he still reports somehow ?

Marshall Ferguson looks at players selected in the last two drafts who have had a major impact and discusses several players he feels could be starters right away this year: RB David Mackie, OL Ryan Hunter, and WR Marc Chapman.

Two years ago we saw seven of eight first round picks start games for their respective teams, entering unprecedented territory for draft selections providing sudden return on investment. That 2016 draft class saw rising new stars like Alex Singleton and Taylor Loffler — along with regular starters such as Brandon Revenberg and Jason Lauzon-Seguin — all within a few months of being selected.
While the CFL Draft may be about the long game, the 2017 class, so far, has been a little less rewarding for general managers in the first 12 months. We’re still a few years away from drawing any real conclusions, but as of now not one of last year’s nine first round picks has emerged as a regular starter. ...

First overall pick Faith Ekakitie was a rotational player on the Bombers’ D-line and Ticats fourth overall pick Connor McGough made an impact on special teams and did play some defence. Meanwhile, Nate Behar and Danny Vandervoort, the two receivers chosen in the first round, combined for one reception.
Last year’s draft did, however, produce some hidden gems, as Kwaku Boateng, Tunde Adeleke and Dondre Wright already look like future stars.

Moving the CFL draft to prime time ( TSN 8 PM ET, May 3rd) has significantly increased viewership since it first began in 2014, as has prime time broadcast of the NFL Draft to a strong 8.3 overnight rating in the US, eight years after the NFL first did this.

Ryan Hunter has signed with KC. He will probably drop out of the first round. Could be a good guy in the pipeline for Hamilton with all their picks.

Dakota Shepley signed with the NY Jets. I would say they are both out of the CFL picture for the foreseeable future.

BOWLING GREEN — The Bowling Green State University football team’s roster includes one of the top-ranked players in next year’s draft.
That is Ryan Hunter, a senior offensive lineman who is a native of Thunder Bay, Ont. That makes him eligible for the Canadian Football League draft next spring, and CFL teams have noticed.
Marshall Ferguson, a former CFL quarterback who is considered the “Mel Kiper” of that league’s draft, ranked Hunter as the No. 3 prospect heading into this year’s draft.

I thought this was hilarious. An article from a Bowling Green paper talking about Ryan Hunter quotes Marshall Ferguson " a former CFL QB considered the Mel Kiper of the League's draft". Marshall is becoming famous.

Who the hell is Mel Kiper, didn't he used to play third base for the Indians? Oh wait that was Duane Kuiper and he played second base. Upon further investigation he holds the major league record for most at bats with only one home run. I did not know that.

Another National with Canadian parents has been added to the 2018 CFL Draft at almost the last minute. However, his father, Tim Berryman, has a strong connection to the CFL, having played for the University of Ottawa Gee Gees, been a #1 overall CFL draft choice and played six years in the league, including the Argos in 1982. Tim was also GM of the XFL Birmingham Thunderbolts.

The son of former CFL linebacker Tim Berryman was named scout team player of the year in 2016, his first season. Then made the roster in 2017. ...

Tim played linebacker at the University of Ottawa and won the Vanier Cup in 1975. He was the first overall pick in the 1976 CFL draft by the Eskimos going on to play six seasons with Edmonton, Hamilton, Ottawa and Toronto. Cynthia played volleyball at Queen’s University.

Berryman checks in at six-foot-four, 220 pounds running the 40-yard dash in 4.60, short shuttle 4.30, broad jumping nine-feet, seven inches and vertical leaping 35 inches. Tigers offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey said Berryman is highly intelligent, fast for his size, catches the ball naturally away from his body with great hands and brings high character to the locker room.

WR Mark Chapman, a National because of Canadian parentage who was ranked second in the final CFL Scouting Bureau rankings, has accepted an invitation to the New York Giants' mini-camp.

Curious; maybe Walters & co. think Wally and Mr, Ed will bomb so bad that the Bummers end up with the 1st overall pick for next season? Laval DE Matt Betts will be up next draft and he may be arguably the best Canadian DE prospect since Brent Johnson came out of Ohio State to be a CFL all-star DE with a HOF career ? Betts rumoured to draw some NFL interest though.

The list of Nationals with dual citizenship added to the CFL Draft keeps getting longer. The latest is Zack Mahoney, a QB ranked 65th out of 101 QBs by draft scout.com. It's time to redefine National.

Syracuse University pivot Zack Mahoney has been included on the list of eligible players for Thursday night’s pick-fest. The 6-foot-2, 192 pounder is originally from LaGrange Park, Illinois but has dual citizenship. 20 NFL teams were at the Syracuse pro day and one CFL franchise.
Mahoney played one season of junior college ball before transferring to Syracuse and making the team as a walk-on. He began as the fifth-stringer but started four games, then served as the back up his last two seasons. Overall, Mahoney played in 25 career games, starting nine, and threw for 1,949 yards and 18 touchdowns against 10 interceptions with a 53 percent completion percentage. He added 100 carries for 242 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

OL Tyler Johstone will be eligible for the 2018 CFL Supplemental Draft because of his dual citizenship. After going unselected in the 2016 NFL Draft, the University of Oregon second team All-American was signed by the Chargers but spent the season on the injury reserve list before being released in April 2017.

No contract offers for Canadian players invited to NFL rookie mini-camps
    Justin Dunk 3downnation.com May 15, 2018

While a number of CFL Draft picks attended NFL rookie mini-camps this year, no player garnered a contract offer.

The list includes Central Michigan University receiver Mark Chapman (Giants), University of Alberta offensive lineman Mark Korte (Jets and Giants), University of Ottawa defensive back Jackson Bennett (Giants), Western University fullback David Mackie (Giants), University of Montreal receiver Regis Cibasu (Bears), University of Nebraska offensive lineman David Knevel (Raiders and Saints) and University of British Columbia receiver Will Watson (Giants). Rice University offensive lineman Peter Godber turned down invites from NFL teams, including the Houston Texans to focus on the CFL.

With those NFL camps complete, the focus shifts towards getting deals done with the respective CFL teams that drafted the athletes north of the border. The exception is Cibasu, chosen in the third round, 20th overall, who will not attend Toronto Argonauts training camp and instead focus on his studies and return to university.

Offensive lineman Dakoda Shepley, taken fifth overall by the Saskatchewan Roughriders, signed a priority undrafted contract with the New York Jets and is set attend training camp with the NFL club while and Toronto Argonauts ninth overall selection, offensive lineman Ryan Hunter will do the same with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Chapman was taken first overall by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Godber third overall, first round by the B.C. Lions, Korte fourth overall, first round by the Ottawa Redblacks, Bennett 11th overall, second round by the Ticats, Mackie 16h overall, second round by the Lions, Knevel 21st overall, third round by the Lions and Watson 54th overall, seventh round by the Leos.
