    Duron Carter Arrested for Marijuana

WR Duron Carter has been arrested for marijuana possession on February 1st.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have issued a statement after receiver Duron Carter was arrested at the Saskatoon airport.
“We can confirm there was an incident early (Friday) morning where Duron Carter was charged with marijuana possession,” the statement read.
“We are working to gather more information and continue to monitor the situation.”
Court records show Carter was arrested Feb. 1.
He has since been released from custody and is scheduled to make his first appearance March 27 in Saskatoon Provincial Court.
Carter, 26, was named the Riders’ most outstanding player for the 2016-17 CFL season, amassing 73 catches for 1,043 yards and eight touchdowns in 17 starts at wide receiver.
He also started one game as a defensive back, in which he picked up nine tackles and an interception which he ran back 43 yards for a touchdown.
By the end of the season he was named both a CFL all-star and a West Division all-star.
Carter signed a one-year extension with the Riders on Jan. 22.

Fortunately, for Carter marijuana is not a banned substance in the CFL, according to the CFL-CFLPA drug policy

While the new deal respects NFL, CIS and World Anti-Doping Agency suspensions, the list of banned substances is entirely of the CFL’s and CFLPA’s choosing. Mary Jane didn’t make the cut and that’s undoubtedly a good thing: attitudes and laws about marijuana in this country are changing fast and it’s an open secret that a significant number players in the CFL like to sample the electric lettuce from time-to-time.

The arrest also raises the issue of arresting people for marijuana possession when the it will be legalized on July 1st, as well as the issue of inconsistent drug law enforcement in the interval. BC has almost arrests no-one for possession while Saskatchewan is known to a leader in such arrests. Furthermore, the Liberal government has been hinting it will review old convictions sometime after the new law comes into place. Any decent lawyer should be able to delay going to trial until after July 1st and probably until such a review is carried out.
In fact I would not be surprised to see Carter's arrest increase the profile for such a review.

Yeah, this is definitely no big deal in 2018. That is a far cry from the early 1970s when Blue Bomber stars Mini Mack Herron and Jim Thorpe were drummed out of the league for marijuana possession and Bernie Ruoff was sent packing from Winnipeg to Hamilton in 1980 when he was found with some of that same substance.

Carter had an earlier marijuana charge in November in Winnipeg in addition to the most recent one, with court dates coming later this month and in March. However, many Saskatchewan fans in the comment section of the Regina Leader-Post are asking why are the police are doing this with marijuana possession becoming legal in July.

It's obvious that Jones is irritated with Carter from his comments.

“I was really disappointed because I had just come off the heels of going down to Florida and spending good quality time with him and his mom,’’ Jones said Wednesday from his home in South Pittsburg, Tenn.
“It’s like when a family member or a close friend gets into a situation like that. I’m really disappointed because I thought we were a bit beyond that thing. It’s something that we’ll wait and see what the legal process goes through and what the authorities say. Then we’ll have more of a comment on exactly what happens with Duron.’’ ...

“He and I are going to sit down in the next little bit and discuss what’s going on and hopefully put these things behind him and grow up a little bit.’’
Jones added that the Riders have looked into Carter’s legal situation.
“It appears it will just be fine, but we’ll have to wait and see,’’ Jones said.
