Anthony Calvillo to be new Argos QB coach
Posted on March 2, 2018 by Justin Dunk // 4 Comments

Anthony Calvillo will become the new quarterbacks’ coach of the Toronto Argonauts, per sources.

Calvillo played for head coach Marc Trestman in Montreal and coached with general manager Jim Popp. The club just lost offensive coordinator Marcus Brady to the Indianapolis Colts and Tommy Condell is expected to take over as OC.

After a Hall of Fame playing career, Calvillo spent the last three seasons on staff in Montreal in various roles: receivers coach, offensive coordinator and overseeing quarterbacks. When new head coach Mike Sherman announced his staff in January, however, Calvillo wasn’t included.

The 45-year-old played 16 seasons for the Alouettes, winning three Grey Cups and three Most Outstanding Player awards. Calvillo’s final numbers were impressive: 79,816 yards and 455 touchdowns.

I think Calvillo is a good replacement for the recently departed QB coach Steve Walsh.

Perfect situation (and role) for Calvillo, he is very familiar with Popp, Trestman and the offence the Argos run.

I'm not sure how I feel about this, since I think Calvillo was a disaster of a coach in Montreal, but being a position coaching and staying there (not always moving up and down as with the Als) and learning under Trestman should be a good thing. Calvillo has never struck me as a coach though, we shall see.

He's in a much better position to succeed in Toronto.

I think having Calvillo and Ray will help in the development of Franklin as he can learn from both of them. Both of them are very team-oriented and lack the big egos that could otherwise create problems among two Hall of Fame QBs on the same team.

So what will Ray coach then? Or are the links to Edmonton real.

Agreed, what better mentors for Franklin that Calvillo and Ricky Ray?

Anthony is a class act... will be cool to see him at BMO... hope this works out for all ... But I think MTL should have found a way to keep him around.

I was thinking the same thing as I assumed that this was to be Ricky's transition year into coaching. Calvillo will be fine as the QB coach but personally I'd rather hear that the OC and DC situations have been solidified.

I don't know where everyone is getting the Ray coaching thing. He has been deemed the starter, so there is no way he will transition to coaching while he is the starting QB.

I'm thinking next year. I would hope that the Argos would want to keep Ray within the organization once he's done. Would they shuffle Calvillo if Ray became available? And I sure won't want Calvillo higher than the QB coach.

I never used the word coach. As an experienced QB Ray can give Franklin advice on the sidelines or whenever Franklin wants to pick his brain as he has done in the past with other QBs and act as a role model in terms of remaining calm no matter how much adversity he faces. Fajardo himself said he learned a great deal from Ray.

I imagine Ricky is thinking he might want to play again in 2019. Why wouldn't he? Great system, great head coach, way better money than any first-year assistant coach would ever make (even if he has to sign a backup salary for 2019).

I would love for Ray to become involved in this role once he retires and so I agree in that the only downside with Calvillo on board is that there may be no space for Ray once his playing days are done. But, that is not this year and having AC involved will definitely be a good thing, especially for the tutelage of Franklin.
