Will the Argos get the first overall draft pick?

With the second loss in a row to Hamilton, the Argos are tied with the Als in points and are ranked behind Montreal since the Als have beaten them in the only game that they have played so far. Looking at the glass half-full under the worst case scenario, will the Argos get the first overall draft pick?

Popp's draft record his last few years in Montreal and his first two here haven't been good. Not even going to get into how first picks supposedly only have a 30% success rate.

The worst team in the league is working hard for "first place".

I am well aware of the success rate of CFL first picks, the fifty year year plus history of the many Argo poor picks, and Popp's draft record. Like I said, I was taking the glass half full approach with a mischievous smile.

Montreal forfeited their first round pick in 2019, so the odds are pretty high that we'll pick first over all.

I don't think the Argos have a demonstrably worse record than other teams when it comes to drafting. Without looking up every team's record, I'd argue that no team has consistently, over a long period of time, hit on most of their picks. I'd be willing to bet that the number of picks who became starters after Round 3 is probably in the ballpark of the number of first-rounders who became starters. CFL drafting seems to be a much bigger crapshoot than any sport other than baseball (where first-rounders often fail to get out of the minors, and 20th-rounders sometimes become stars).

I said over fifty plus years because I remember the many wretched Argo teams in the 50s, 60s, and 70s with many American stars but poor Canadian talent that were perennial losers, in part due to a lack of depth in Canadian talent.

And I said that not drafting well is not just an Argo phenomenon. Although I would dispute the notion that when the Argos were bad in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, it was all (or even mostly) because of bad Canadians. There were plenty of bad Americans on those teams as well.

How serious was the Canadian Draft in those days?

Out of all the legends you hear, never is their draft selection ever mentioned. I’m guessing no one cared as much about the draft as they do these days.

General Question: How many legends have come out of the draft in the last 25 years ?

    Why just 25 years? OP mentioned 50’s, 60’s, 70’s.

But to make this more “current”, Paul Masotti was a great Argo. Anyone recall when he was drafted? I just feel that the draft has only become a real interest from fans and media within the last 10 years. Probably more so withis last 5 years.

Well, you almost got to take 5-10 years off your question to make a 'legend.' If we want to call a legend a HOF then:

    1993 -- Mike O'Shea (HOF)
    1994 -- None
    1995 -- Gene Makowsky (HOF)
    1996 -- Bryan Chiu (HOF)
    1997 -- Doug Brown
    1998 -- Ben Cahoon

    Those are some

I've only been a fan for 23 lol. While I have seen some games from the 50's, 60's, and 70's - not enough to really know what's what IMO. If that makes sense.

Still this this day I'm not a fan of Cahoon being considered a Canadian. Don't know if I'd call Brown a legend or even Chiu and Makowsky for that matter. O'Shea yeah, but I may be a bit biased lol.

I wonder if Cornish will be considered one in 20 years ?

I'm going to just think of some prominent Canadian Argos over the years and figure out how they joined the team:

Paul Masotti -- drafted in the 2nd round (15th overall) by the Argos in 1988
Dan Ferrone -- Territorial Exemption (1981)
Chris Schultz -- drafted in the 1st round (7th overall) by the Argos in 1982
Kevin Eiben -- drafted in the 4th round (26th overall) by the Argos in 2001
Don Moen -- acquired in trade(?)
    Paul Pearson -- no idea

I sorta counted HOF induction as being a legend.

I understand. I'm just trying to figure out what constitutes "legend" myself. For me it's Pinball, O'Shea and obviously Flutie the last 25 years. Ray 20 years from now. And Durie as well maybe ?

I guess you're trying to say it's guys w/ an aura around them (for lack of a better term). That definitely narrows the list down. That's guys like Krol, Copeland, Dick Shatto, Holloway, Greer, Pinball, Flutie.
