    Ricky Ray talks retirement

I talked to Ricky for about half an hour on Wednesday. He's feeling great physically, but is now mulling over his future.

Here's the story based on our discussion, enjoy.

Good read. The fan in me wants to see him play again. But for his health and family I'm ok with Ricky hanging them up.

Agreed. I couldn't bare to watch him take any more devastating hits.

Thanks Mike. To me the key sentences in the article that suggest Ricky is much more likely to retire than return are:

“My body was telling me something, between the shoulder injury and the neck. Mentally I can handle it, physically I don’t know if I’m up for it. Winning the Grey Cup, the season we had was one of the most enjoyable seasons of my career, that’s one of the reasons I came back, but this time has been tough with the injuries.”

Not sure if I want that either. I don't like fast tracking coaches based on sentiment. IMO, it is what set Calvillo back as a coach and something he may not be ever able to recover from.

Calvillo needs to go do color commentary for a decade and then go back into the coaching ranks.

I assume that's not meant seriously -- he has never given me the impression of being an interesting or engaging public speaker. Last thing the broadcasts needs is dullness.

Given the new constraints on #/$ for coaches, I doubt this would be an option for 2019.

The new system may block former players (who might otherwise make good coaches down the road) from pursuing a post playing career in the CFL, damn shame.
