Exclamation For those who still Tailgate

The Ontario government is asking for feedback about the rules and consumption of alcohol in Ontario. Currently Ontario has the strictist and most antiquated alcohol laws in Canada, this is your chance to provide feedback about updating and relaxing the laws to allow for things that most of the world already has, like drinking your own alcohol at a Tailgate:

Done a while back and explicity mentioned tailgaiting as the background context for some of my answers.

I helped the cause. Was short and easy. The other questions asked in the survey were actually more important to me.

I did the survey. I don't tailgate, and don't even live in Toronto anymore, but I think the liquor laws are too strict surrounding that. I let them know that in the comment section. Basically I said let people bring their own booze, and let a cop by near by. If things get out of hand, let the cop deal with it. Its really so easy to deal with. If for some reason Argo tailgates are so booze fueled and get out of hand, you just send more cops there, and then people will get the idea. Make sure minors aren't drinking. Its not rocket science.

Yes we have some of the most antiquated alcohol laws anywhere. Why does the LCBO have this huge monopoly? across the border in the US and in most other western countries you can go to a private run liquor store and buy liquor at all hours. Same with beer, it's not right that the Beer Store which is owned by two foreign breweries are allowed to have a monopoly and the government sets the prices.
At least there has been some progress with large grocery chains allowed to sell beer, but they are only allowed to sell 6 packs. The small local grocery stores or corner stores simply can not afford the huge beer license that Walmart and Loblaws pay.

As for tailgating, we bring our own beer to the parking lot, same at the private lots around Tim Hortons field, never been stopped by police. I prefer the unofficial fan tail gates.
Of course the Shipyard parties are different and with beer at $5 you can't beat that.

It's not just across the boarder in the USA. It's other provinces too:

And the grocery stores have to buy their alcohol from the LCBO and they have a Cap on how much they're allowed to sell per day. Once they hit that Cap they have to stop selling for the rest of the day.

True but New York state for some of us is a lot closer than another province. I can buy a 30 pack of Blue or Canadian beer at a gas station in NY for US$19, even cheaper for Bud Light or Milwaukee. The government doesn't realize that if every gas station, corner store could apply for a yearly license to sell beer they could make a fortune on the yearly license.
When we lived in Ottawa it was cheaper to go across to Quebec to buy a 24 at the local dapanneur, the owner said that he was still making a profit at $25 for a 24, he was not allowed to sell it cheaper than $25 because of a ridiculous federal law

It certainly is in regards to Tailgating, which is what this Thread is about.

I just want to point out I predicted this a year ago on these forums and I was laughed at.

This will be helpful for events, especially events that struggle. It's easy to see why events are often so much more fun to attend in the USA, or places like Quebec. They are can't miss EVENTS. Socializing, spending time, not feeling pressured by outdated rules and regs and frankly it is about time that the province updated some of these antiquated liquor regulations. This has been a long time coming.

Some of those laws were instituted in the Victorian era.

Good call on this. It was long overdue.

Curious how the Argos will Implement it. Will they still use Ontario Place or actually use the parking lot next to BMO? Glad it's in place for those who enjoyed it.

I don’t think the Argos need to implement anything. Their shot at Tailgating was so horribly over regulated and expensive that it imploded over the hundreds of thousands of dollars of costs. I understand that now, with the price of parking, you can pull out the BBQ and cooler and enjoy your own/collective a pre-game event. Very sensible.

I recall a time in Ontario on Sundays when you couldn’t enjoy a beverage without ordering food. For us teenagers that meant an order of fries with the beer. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to figure this country out?

Because the anti-Ford media treats it special, doesn’t mean that Ford focuses any time on it. I find your hypocrisy amazing. Something clearly beneficial to the Argos and you trash it. What gives?
