2019 U Sports East West Bowl

The 17th annual East West Bowl will be hosted by Carleton University on Saturday May 11, marking its first appearance in Ottawa.

The game will feature a sideline rematch of the last two Vanier Cup games, as Glen Constantin of Laval and Greg Marshall of Western will be behind the two benches.
The West team is mostly made up of U SPORTS football players from Canada West and OUA schools, except Carleton, Ottawa and Queen’s, which play for the East squad. The rest of the East team features players from AUS and RSEQ schools. ...

The week-long event – including four days of practices, a combine for participating players, and a CFL free agent camp – serves as the first step to identifying future CFL talent. For the next year, players from both squads will vie for coveted spots on the CFL Scouting Bureau Top 20 Prospects List – published in August, December and April – before showcasing their skills at regional and national combines in advance of the draft next spring.

Last year, the West narrowly edged the East 15-14 for their third straight win, extending their lead in the all-time series to 10-6. The game featured all 15 U SPORTS prospects to appear on at least one Scouting Bureau list this season, headlined by Laval defensive end Mathieu Betts, who was named Friday as the top-ranked prospect heading into the 2019 Draft.
Team rosters for the game will be unveiled in early May following the Draft, while livestreaming information will also be confirmed and announced at a later date. ...

Wish they could have announced the rosters sooner.

A woefully under-appreciated and weakly promoted event/game - why couldn't TSN put it on National TV to promote the upcoming Canadian football season ?; but still good that it happens.

I'm hoping to be able to go.

Rosters announced for this game; I assume they are going to have their usual Combine testing and post the results.

Some very good prospects for the next CFL draft will be at this game - some top guys thus far:

    - receivers Tyler Ternowski (Waterloo - lit up U Sports in receiving last season) & Cordell Hastings (Acadia)

    - O-lineman Ketel Asse (Laval - all-Canadian last season)

    - DB - Marc-A Deqouy (Montreal - big 6-3 play-making DB))

    - LBs - Adam Auclair (Laval) & Bailey Feltmate (Acadia)

Testing results might have some guys climb in the rankings.

Quarterback Des Catellier has been selected to play in the East West Bowl.

Catellier will enter his second year as Manitoba’s starting pivot in 2019. He made huge strides in 2018, throwing for 2,012 yards and 16 touchdowns, the latter of which tied him for second in the Canada West conference. Over the Calgary native’s last two seasons, he’s thrown for 3,154 yards and 23 scores while also holding the best completion percentage in program history (minimum 500 yards passing per year), at 62.6 helping the Bisons to a 3-6 record with several of their losses coming within 10 points or less. He also finished the season with 21 rushing attempts for 137 yards.

The year prior, Catellier finished the season completing just under 60 per cent of his passes for 1,142 yards and five touchdowns. His best game came against the University of Saskatchewan where he completed 24 of his throws on 32 attempts for 277 yards and three touchdowns.

The url below includes team rosters as well as a look at Hec Crighton winner QB Adam Sinagra.

Lieutenant Governor Athletic Award finalist and reigning Hec Crighton Trophy winner Adam Sinagra of the Calgary Dinos is one of 88 players announced on Friday that will suit up for the 2019 U SPORTS East-West Bowl, which serves as the first step to identifying future CFL talent. ...

Sinagra is a favourite to crack that top 20 list. The Point Claire, Que., native led the Dinos to a perfect 8-0 season and the most potent offence in the nation, averaging 570.9 yards per game. Sinagra captured the 2018 Hec Crighton Trophy after setting a U SPORTS record with 3,233 passing yards and ranked second in the nation in passing touchdowns this season with 23. Sinagra will share quarterback duties with Manitoba’s Des Catellier for the West team, while Acadia’s Hunter Guenard and Toronto’s Clay Sequira will be under centre for the East squad. ...

Last year, the West narrowly edged the East 15-14 for their third straight win, extending their lead in the all-time series to 10-6. The game featured all 15 U SPORTS prospects to appear on at least one Scouting Bureau list this season, headlined by recently named U SPORTS Male Athlete of the Year and No.1-ranked Mathieu Betts from Laval, who was signed by the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent.

The game will feature a sideline rematch of the last two Vanier Cup games, as Glen Constantin of Laval and Greg Marshall of Western will be behind the two benches.

Marshall Ferguson assesses the QBs practicing for the game on Saturday very favourably below:

Calgary’s Adam Sinagra's ... ability to slide around the pocket with ease is special and while battling a cool whipping wind at Thursday morning’s on-field session, he found a way to make some really impressive throws. One of which came in 12-on-12 where Sinagra got through three reads while avoiding the rush and found an open crosser before pumping the ball perfectly on target to his receiver. ...

In 2018, Sinagra had 27 touchdown passes to just 10 interceptions while amassing a whopping 3,872 yards through the air. He’s the heir apparent to the newly Micheal O’Connor-created title of ‘U SPORTS QB with the best chance to get drafted.’

Elsewhere on Team West, Manitoba’s Des Catellier more than held his own with some great movement and accuracy Thursday while on the other side of the field Acadia QB Hunter Guenard – the AUS leading passer who was intercepted just three times in 2018 – showed off his arm strength.

The fourth, and perhaps most intriguing QB at the 2019 East-West Bowl, is Toronto’s Clay Sequeira. Clay dressed and started in just four games last season for Toronto and went 72/127 for 875 yards and two touchdowns. He had a career-high 367 yards vs Waterloo on Sept 1 but has limited experience against U SPORTS competition and will be taking on the best of the 2020 CFL Draft class this Saturday. For him this week is a tremendous opportunity to develop and grow his game for the Varsity Blues to take advantage of come August.

All in all, the QBs at this year’s East-West Bowl put together 57 touchdowns, 24 interceptions and 8,817 yards in 2018. It’s a great group that should create some excitement Saturday should they play to their practice shown potential.

    Game report:

Nice day for football in the Nation's Capital - partly cloudy with some bursts of sun; not to windy.

I'd peg attendance around 1000 range - a lot of gear sported from various U Sports programs - probably mostly family & friends of players from around the country; this game is sadly unknown, under-appreciated and under-marketed = typical of what Canadian football faces in it's own country (see Argonauts / Toronto).

Lots of offence on display for such a game where offences usually aren't smooth units; big advantage to the West team with superior passing QBs - Sinagra showed poise and a strong & accurate arm (= look for him to be totally over-looked by the GOBs next draft a la Chris Merchant this recent CFL draft); Catelier from the Bisons showed a good arm too - and this allowed some of the West receiver talent to really shine: Macho Bockru (Manitoba - superb TD grab), Kian Schaffer-Baker (Guelph) and Colton Klassen (kid who really impressed me when the Huskies gave Western a game in the Semi last season) in particular, A few RBs impressed too with some nice runs - small 5-7 back Dale Wright (Acadia) broke a 60 plus yarder and showed quickness to get the edge on some other runs; another smallish back - Nathan Carter (Carleton) broke some nice runs; and big back Jake Puskas (Queens) ran hard up the gut. Maybe superior O-line talent on both sides vs. the front 7s was a factor ?

Not that much D play-making talent on display but some: Manitoba DE Brock Gowanlock looked strong and had a couple of sacks; Laurier all-star DB Will Amoah had a real nice pick and a bunch of tackles; Marc Deqouy (Montreal all-star DB) and Rory Kelly (Acadia) each had a good play INT.

Not much kicking game, but Sherby punter P-A D'Astous showed some tremendous hang-time. A few decent returns as well.

Nice to see some top players in the country on display in a preview of the next CFL draft. They hold a Combine with measurements & testing #s at this event, but I can't find the numbers listed/posted anywhere. ? Might be another deep crop for both O-line and receivers - from U Sports ball anyways - for the next CFL draft. Not sure there is even close to a Matt Betts type talent on the D side - but that level talent does not come around often. Some of these players might really step-up with a strong 4th season of college ball - they are still young and learning & developing.

Sinagra really stood out in throwing for 320 yards and 2TDs.

I've been to a few Carleton games and I believe the stadium only holds about 3,000 so a 1,000 would be about 1/3 full. But all star games seem to be a hard sell anymore. The big east/west shrine game down south doesn't seem to be that well attended anymore. The game was live streamed as most of the CIS games are now. Hopefully that can help get more people watching CIS games. We now have some names to follow this fall and will look forward to the first top 20 prospect list.
