RIP Marv= an all-time Argo great for sure !
Back in the day, for this young sports fan - 2 of my fave players in my two fave sports - football & hockey - wore #27; Marv for the Argos, and the Big M for the Leafs.
Very sad to hear of his passing. A truly great player. Six years, he was an All-Canadian. I have fond memories of watching him patrol the Argo defensive backfield.
Sorry to hear about this. May he RIP.
It's us vs the rest of the country
Marv Luster was a great one. I believe if he was coming out of College now he would be a 1st round NFL pick.
I was thinking about back before the TSN and Sportsnet NCAA games for Canada were mostly what we would see on New Year's Day. The Orange Bowl, The Cotton Bowl and then the Rose Bowl. This is where the Canadian football fans would get familiar with the big names of those top teams playing in these Bowl games. Teams like USC, UCLA, Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma etc. The richer CFL teams at the time, namely Toronto, Montreal and BC would quite often sign a big name player who starred in one of those Bowl games. I wonder if after those teams could no longer sign high NFL draft picks coming out of the US College's, is when some of the interest started to wan in Toronto, Montreal and BC. But maybe it's just a coincidence.
I spoke with a couple of Marv's former teammates, as well exchanged emails with his son for the story.

I've got his football card somewhere. Great career, and quite the journey going from Louisiana to UCLA to the CFL. He also had one of the best sports names ever.
RIP
A lot of people don't realize that besides being an Eastern All-Star every year from 1966 to 1972, Luster had started his career in the CFL with two years as an Eastern All-Star receiver with the Als. He had a great knack for being knowing where the ball was going on defence, probably in part due to his time on offence.
I seem to remember that Marv Luster played as a "Naturalized" non-import player during his glory years with the Argonauts. To the best of my knowledge, players with this status were Americans who had obtained Canadian citizenship... which required them to live (and play) here for at least 5 years. That was a great rule... I wish that some form of it could be re-introduced. I should add... I believe that each team was limited to a fairly small number of players in this category.
