I had high hopes for McDiarmid a few years ago, but his time in Edmonton and now Toronto have opened my eyes to how bad he is and/or become. Yeah, the Head Coach has final say on key plays, but it's been a long time since McDiarmid ran a good special teams unit.
He’s not wrong - if the fans in my section are pointing it out - how were we that unaware as a tram? That first kick misses we had no one back there at all! I haven’t seen replay of the actual miss so I’ll reserve comment there but wow re: no returner. Would have been embarrassing
The first FG with no returner didn’t bother me. They put in the vertical unit and tried for the block. Considering that the kick was going through the 17 yard end zones anyway and if it hits the post it’s dead, a return is unlikely. They correctly put a returner back when he kick got moved back, and even that almost went through the end zone.
It's us vs the rest of the country

Blocking a short to mid-range FG in the CFL is extremely rare.
I like the strategy of putting two returners in the end zone when the game is on the line. It's a shorter run to the ball for the returner if he only has to worry about a miss to one side.
Yes it’s rare, especially in the CFL where your short another player as a returner. Next to impossible if there’s two returners. I would argue the extra pressure might have caused the procedure call on B.C. The fact that we know it did go through the uprights, going for the block was the right call. Can’t play the alternate future, what if scenarios.
