    Tweak the Rouge?

    Screen Shot 2019-07-07 at 6.43.02 AM.jpg

No sour grapes on the way the Argos lost last night, but winning on a failed field goal attempt really is anticlimactic--not to mention missing out on a potentially entertaining overtime. I love the rouge and its deep-rooted history in the rules of the game, but Milt has a point. What if the defending team on the kick could elect to either concede the rouge and take the ball on the 35 or decline the rouge and take the ball on the 5? Given the importance of field position, there are few situations a team would take the ball on the 5, but late in a tied game would definitely be one of them.

[Sorry the screen grab is so small--couldn't get the embed tweet thing to work.]

I don't know why Milt, who has played in this league for so long think that the game was won by a missed field goal.

The only way I would tweak the rule is if the ball sails through the endzone and not playable.

This is not the case of what happened last night. I wouldn't change the rules because of a laspe of judgement and/or bad execution.

I agree. If the kick is in play, force the receiving team to either make a play or concede a point. If the ball cannot be fielded, don't award a point.

I agree, the point on a missed FG has always been a thing I hated. Why reward a team for missing? it doesn't make sense. Just another one of these rules that makes the CFL different and we won't get rid of it even though it's a stupid rule IMO

This works for me too. Would a bounce in the end zone and out through the back be considered as "cannot be fielded" in this scenario or is the point awarded?

I've been saying the same thing for years Paul. Reward good kick coverage with the point, not the missed FG. If it can't be returned, no point.

    Bingo!
Can you imagine a Grey Cup game being decided this way?

If it bounces in the end zone first, I would still say it's playable. If the goal in this scenario is not to concede the single, then the onus in on the special teams to cover the incoming kick correctly so they can get to it.

This would have still left Rainey in a bind last night. It was almost impossible to field the miss without stepping out yesterday, yet if he let it go it might have bounced just inside the boundary. Still feels like a reward for failure.

Yes, if it lands in the end zone even for a second, it is playable and rouge-able.

I know I'm in the minority, but I prefer to apply the kickoff rule to punts and missed FGs. If it sails through or bounces through, no point. Makes the rule uniform (same coloured socks!) for all kicks.
