Late Season Argo Signings and Releases

The Argos have released three American players from their expanded roster on October 14th: DB Lorenzo White Jr.; WR Dominique Heath; and DL Ricky Haley.

Heath, 5’9 and 166-pounds, played his final college season at Appalachian State (2018) where he hauled in 23 passes for 304 yards and five touchdowns in 13 games for the Mountaineers. The North Carolina native played three seasons at Kansas State (2015-2017) before his time at App State, catching 95 balls for 947 yards and seven touchdowns for the Wildcats. Heath also added 39 punt returns for 401 yards and a touchdown.

Haley, 6’3 and 270-pounds, played four seasons at Alabama State, recording 68 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one interception in 28 total games for the Hornets.

White Jr., 6’1 and 190-pounds, most recently spent time in the Arena Football League last season with Sioux Falls after stints in Tri-City (2015) and Spokane (2016). Before his Arena Football experience, the Florida native worked out for the Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers as well as a spending training camp with the Montreal Alouettes in 2013. The Central Michigan product played four seasons for the Chippewas recording 95 tackles, one interception and 15 pass break-ups in 44 career games. White Jr.’s father is eight-year NFL veteran and one time Pro Bowler (1992) Lorenzo White.

The Argos have added two DBs to their PR: Shaquille Richardson and Jalin Burrell.

Richardson, 27, most recently spent time with the Arizona Hotshots of the Alliance of American Football in 2019 after spending the 2018 offseason with the Oakland Raiders. The Compton, California native is a two-year CFL veteran after playing 27 games over two seasons (2016-2017) for the Calgary Stampeders tallying 60 tackles, 14 special teams tackles, one sack, four interceptions and one touchdown. The defensive back was a fifth-round draft choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2014 and spent the next two years with Kansas City, Arizona, Tennessee and Carolina of the NFL.

Burrell, 23, was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs in May of this year but waived a month later. The product of New Mexico State played two seasons for the Lobos (2017-2018) where he racked up 105 total tackles, one interception and 16 passes defended. Prior to his two years with NMSU, the California native played two seasons at Moorpark College.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a roster move. Burrell was waived with the non-football illness designation. What that means is that something not related to football kept him from seeing the field, in this case an illness.

It’s a real shame that Burrell is dealing with an illness at this juncture. He was one of the standout players with the Chiefs during their rookie minicamp. He earned some high praise from the defensive coaching staff and seemed to be coming along nicely.

Good to see Murphy isn't satisfied with standing pat even with 3 games left he can bring some of his guys in and maybe they'll be back next year then if they're good.

I read an article from Kansas City that the Coaches were really high on Burrell in training camp and the pre-season games. However, he developed a sickness (which wasn't disclosed) so the team was releasing him with maybe an injury settlement. The thinking was he would be re-signed to a futures contract for next year.
John Murphy must have convinced him to try the CFL instead.
Where is KCArgo with the local news?

Richardson is more of a known commodity having played a couple of years with Calgary.

It doesn't seem worth starting a new thread for this, but an article by Steve Milton in the Hamilton Spectator (behind a paywall -- support journalism) makes a point I hadn't considered. Unlike in past years when teams with nothing to play for made wholesale lineup changes (e.g. Argos' final RS games in 2004 and 2012), it may not be possible this time because of the salary cap. If you put a vet on the IL to replace him with a PR player you want to see in action, you are paying salaries to two guys instead of one. Teams up against the cap (or trying to conserve cap room to use as post-season signing bonuses) may not be able to do much of that. We are definitely OK at QB since all four are already on the 46-man roster and being paid, but it may not be possible to, say, sit a veteran DB so we can try one of these new guys out. Worth watching this in the next couple of weeks.

Interesting conundrum. I can see teams dressing their starters, but only playing them as needed and letting the backups take most of the snaps. Basically reverse the depth charts. They will still be able to get a few PR players in there by swapping out the depth guys lower contracts.
