    Hughes an Argo

    https://forums.cfl.ca/t/heading-east...rgonauts/69600

Hope he still has some gas in the tank. I'll say this -- he seems to play best when he has a chip on his shoulder, so even as a senior citizen he might be a force.

Argos have made this official on their site.

I have a feeling they will no longer be in the Corderro Law business after this move. Not sure how I feel about this. I wouldn't have done it, but I've been wrong before.

Said this in the other thread....

The year off can be a blessing or a curse. He's either refreshed or rusty. I do like the signing. I don't think Argos pass rush has ever been great since Butler-Lemon so it's worth the risk. I want some excitement and Hughes can bring it. Also very marketable but I doubt Toronto radio is lining up in having him. What are the odds Marshall Ferguson is the first to have him on.

In his case, he already led the league in sacks the last time the league played, so there is no way it can be a blessing. He can't get any better than that. Only way to go is down hill, and for the Argos sake, let's hope it's not a steep hill.

Hughes at D-Line + Shaq Richardson & Robertson Daniel in the secondary (too bad Tommie Campbell left town ;o) )

Arbuckle at QB + Daniels, Rogers & Brescacin in the receiving corps.

The horsemen of the Argopocalypse ;o)

    **** edit - add C Law to the D-line.

SO, that is potentially 8 former Stump starters for this new Argo team (1/3 of the starting roster) ... interesting

Led the league in Sacks in each of the past 4 seasons. This is definitely something that we needed help with.

In addition to his strong defensive play, what was also needed was his swagger!

I understand the concern regarding age, but with him being here for two years, they can bring some guys along; Eli Harold, Robbie Smith and maybe even another high NFL Pick like Shane Ray.

For whatever reason, the best pass rushers in the game have usually played to their mid 30's, or later.

Grover Covington, Elfrid Payton, Bobby Jurasin and James Quick Parker all had 11, 12, and 13 year careers.

Always loved him as a player. Age is a concern, but we should be able to squeeze at least one more year out of him as long as he doesn't get fat and lazy like Nik Lewis did in his embarrassing final year.

I wonder if the Argos are going to still spend to the top of the cap (or beyond) while the rest of the league spends to the floor. I'd be ok with that. Bad boys of the league. Bring it on!!!

I'll put it this way -- age is a concern -- the Argos project to start three defensive linemen (Hughes, Nevis & Law) who are all over the age of 30. Obviously as an Argo fan, I would love for them to make any concerns about age to be a moot point.

I'll also say this -- the Argos, on paper, haven't had as good a projected d-line since 2017, and I know I've been clamoring for them to address the d-line for several years and they've finally done so.

    Just like the '71 Argos.

I am not sure, however, if any of them played to age 37 so there isn't much of a precedent to look back upon.

Nik Lewis hauled in 73 catches for 650 yds in 14 games and was amazing for Montreal in 2017 to become the CFL all time reception leader. 5 receptions per game average is far from embarrassing with an 8 yd average that helped convert many second downs.

Not fast and more rumbling than running with his trademark high hurdle move that made him a fan favorite it's hard to see how he doesn't make the Hall of Fame.

Nothing against Nik Lewis, but if he goes in before D.K. Smith, it will be a(nother) travesty.

OMG...he was not amazing in 2017. 8 yards a reception in the CFL is embarrassing for a SB. Most running backs have at least that as their average. He really overstayed his welcome in the league. I watched him closely. He would walk 3 yards down field, turn around and if nobody covered him, he would get the ball. If you can't run down field as a receiver, you shouldn't be on the field. There is more to being a receiver than number of catches. The fact that he couldn't clear out routes for other receivers made him a huge detriment to their offence.

I don't want to take away from the majority of his career, but the way I see it, a pro athlete that isn't willing to put in the work to stay in shape should never get on the field. He shouldn't have made a roster his last 2 years in the league.
