Women's Soccer Team Wins Olympic Gold

A great effort by the Canadian underdogs to defeat the favoured Americans and Swedes to take the gold medal in Japan in the shootout. I am particularly happy to see Christine Sinclair finally win gold since she has been the backbone of the team for two decades, the game's greatest scorer and an all-round class act. It was also nice to see the first transgender person to win a medal of any kind at the Olympics, Quinn, be a member of the Canadian team, considering all the prejudice they have faced on and off the field.

I am not a fan of soccer, but cannot deny the significance of this milestone.

Unexpected trivia: Canada is the only country to win both the men's (1904) and women's (2020) Olympic soccer gold.

The 1904 tournament included a whole three teams - one from Galt (Cambridge), and two from St. Louis.
