Is the CFL Screwing Canadian QBs #2

I started a new thread on this topic as the last page of the #1 thread was sccrewed up when I posted there.
Chris Merchant is the #2 Fantasy ranked player in the Hungarian League. His team, the Fehervar Enthroners, are 2-0, outscoring the opposition 89-31. The Fehervar Enthroners have been announced as an expansion team for the European League of Football, the new professional league as opposed to the many semi-pro leagues in Europe, in 2023. So Merchant could well have a chance to play at an even higher level next year.

I'm very interested to see if Merchant sticks with the Enthroners next season. It seems like life in the European leagues is quite nomadic. For the record, I think he's won a few more games this year, though those games were interleague and part of the CEFL Cup tournament.

Bret Hunchak and Caleb Scott are both having solid seasons in the French D1 league.

Tre Ford got to play some QB in the Esks 1st ex. game; 1 for 3 passing and some decent rushing yardage.

Merchant could set all of European football's passing records and win very game there, and it wouldn't matter to GOBs - they have already written him off (or they would have signed him this off-season), while they continue to bring every American QB they can drag up here for TC shots.

Have you read at all if Tre Ford was taking snaps while is brother was on the field for the Bombers? I wonder how much of a sibling rivalry could develop there.

Hard to make the case anymore that Canadian QBs are "getting screwed". As Duane Forde pointed out tonight, we see Canadian QBs getting more chances every year now. Three made appearances in the Edmonton/BC opener with Nathan Rourke putting in an outstanding performance. Chris Jones seems to love Tre Ford more than any of his other QBs and I get the sense that he wants Ford to be his starter but I really hope that Jones gives Ford the proper amount of time to develop before throwing him to the wolves.
Chad Kelly + Dan Adeboboye + David Ungerer + Damonte Coxie + DaVaris Daniels + Dejon Brissett = Unstoppable Force

That would be nice if he could be the guy to get the breaks as no other Canadian QB has since Russ Jackson (save very recently). He's a phenomenal athlete but he needs time to grow, he's not ready.

FYI - Gerry Datillio was East MOP back around 1980; and Greg Vavra won the Stamps starting QB job as a rookie early 80s. Luc Tousignault also got to play some QB for the Als after being an NFL draft pick. 80s = a long CFL time ago.

And it's nice now for the recognition that Rourke, O'Connor or Ford may be getting (Rourke was a star US college ball QB = he would have been CFL sought after if he was American; and Ford runs a 4.4 range 40 = "athlete" to be looked at) ; but not enough IMO; until some CFL media types start asking wayyyyyyyy more questions on the file - like why Adam Sinagra got totally snubbed in the CFL draft or why Chris Merchant is not being brought home for a real CFL try-out ... whilst GOBs continue to drag dozens of American QBs up here for TC try-outs every year. We'll see by next draft if any top Canadian QBs draw any real CFL interest; not sure there has been much real change on this file.

If you recall after that award winning season he was benched so all time great CFL QB Vince Ferragamo could take the starter's job.

Yep; and 40 some years later ... (and Datillio, like Rourke, was a star US college ball QB) ... maybe Ford will get a real shot eventually, at least he made the roster out of the gate, and actually got to play a few reps in his first real CFL game.

I'll wait to see if Canadians continue to get decent shots to play QB. As noted after Gerry Datillo's East MOP season was replaced by American bust Vince Ferragamo who had played in a Super Bowl. It took decades after the first Black QBs appeared in the NFL to be regularly accepted by the NFL and even today Black head coaches are still complaining about how they are treated with tokenism. For me the ongoing development of Canadian QBs in the CFL will be the test, not just the occasional Canadian exception at QB, as systemic patterns of prejudice are hard to break.

Great to see Nathan Rourke do so well in the season opener going 26/29 for 282 passing yards and rushing for another 78 yards, helping to overcome suggestions that his outstanding performance in the last game of the 2021 season was questionable because it was a meaningless game against a weak opponent.

Do we need to also say that it was the best QB performance of the week.

    Bang-on Jerry !

Let's wait and see what GOBs do down the road. The problem IMO is a disgusting lack of respect, disregard or ignorance of Canadian college ball trained QBs. Ford may be the rare exception based on his 4.4 speed and "athlete" status; or, maybe the GOBs are going to change their ways (but the recent examples of Merchant & Sinagra suggest otherwise IMO); there is usually one or two at least very good U Sports all-star or leading passer QBs who would be up every draft and worth some sort of CFL look IMO. And the recent U Sports play-off quarter finals featured 3 rookie QBs leading their teams. We shall see.

Signing Nathan Rourke relatively cheap compared to the usual starter salary for American QBs is paying off in not only getting a good QB, but also having more money to sign other very good players.

In leading the Fehervar Enthroners of the Hungarian Football League to another lopsided victory, 47-18, Chris Merchant has led the team to a 4-0 record while outscoring opponents 150-51. With Fehervar Enthroners joining the top ranked European League of Football next year, Merchant looks like he could well be their starting QB.

Canadian QB Tre Ford will be starting for the Elks in Hamilton on Canada Day. Chris Jones really seems to like Ford a lot and also doesn't seem high on Nick Arbuckle who has been demoted to backup status.

Rourke showed his typical response to personal adversity in a game as he did so often at Ohio by immediately responding with a long TD pass after two quick interceptions and taking control of the game following a fumble. His stats were impressive going 23/31 for 359 yards with 2TD passes and 87 yards including a 50 yard TD run.

Even though IMO Ford is nowhere near ready, I hope he can ride his arm and legs into showing enough to keep getting the opportunity. The Elks likely aren't going anywhere this season and if a proven winner like Jones sees something in him that's great. It's great to see the shoe on the other foot for a change, I hope it isn't a one off.

Much as I can't stand ego-Jones and think his recycle / re-hire by the EE was desperate, pathetic CFL GOB stuff ... gotta give him some credit for having some faith or confidence in Tre Ford as a QB talent; all sorts of naysayers thinking he would bomb if he got to play in the CFL right away, and he mostly proved them wrong last night. Showed off his QB running ability/speed but also a strong arm. Nice to see; I hope he becomes a full-time CFL starting QB; along with Rourke.

In the second half, not only did Ego Jones use a Canadian QB but a Canadian RB too!
