Happy Kerwin Bell spikes himself in the nuts day!

On October 27, 2000 the Argos were in a fight for their playoff lives. They would beat the Blue Bombers 32-31 on what I recall was a single by Prefontaine and Brad Elberg tackled the WPG returner in the endzone.

However, more importantly it is the anniversary of the Twitter GIF that keeps on giving: Kerwin Bell spiking himself in the nuts after scoring a TD.

He probably wasn't as bad a QB as everyone remembers, but he certainly wasn't going to win any awards. He almost threw for 5,000 yards in 1998 and had a 2,000-yard receiver which has to count for something I suppose. The Achilles heel of that Argos team was a lack of running game because Robert Drummond left for BC via free agency after the 1997 season.

He did well considering he was in the unenviable role of replacing Flutie. He can throw the ball as well as any QB I have seen, but his lack of mobility meant he needed a great o-line.

Also "Happy 40,116 At The Skydome Day." Oct 27, 2007 - Argos 16, Winnipeg 8, in front of over 40,000 fans.

Yeah, I know, the house was being papered, I know there were a lot of things wrong with Skydome, and I know BMO was supposed to fix everything, but still: 40,000 people in the building, not that long ago.

I was there that Friday night. Albert Johnson III was the great Winnipeg return man that Elberg “Helecoptered” just before he could return the ball out of the endzone, which resulted in the winning single. IIRC Johnson was injured on the play and was never quite the same.

To my knowledge, I've never seen anyone be able to breakdown how many people were paid vs. comped in the C & S era.

It's always struck me as relatively easy to get people to come once. F'rinstance back in the day the team would sometimes do a mid-weekday exhibition game and bring in thousands of public or high school students. (We had three entire high school bands join Argonotes one day.)

Or one time the team connected with U of T, York, Ryerson, and colleges during orientation week and brought in thousands of university students, all roaring away (many, no doubt, overly refreshed.)

It looked great, but all those university students left at half-time, as I recall. And those high schoolers didn't exactly come back with their parents either. We'd like to think that if you let kids in free, their parents will turn into ticket buyers, but .... The challenge is always to get people to come to their 2nd game. I don't think anybody's cracked that nut yet.

It almost has to be love at first sight. That was my experience watching BC play the Argos in '04 and I knew nothing about football in general. I wanted to go back. Can't imagine someone who wasn't interested in following the game want to be back. So the question is out of 10,000 people, what % of people enjoyed their time?

He was underrated following Flutie. He had next to no mobility and would stand in the pocket and gun the ball down field. And back then the D got the 3 step follow through on the QB, so he took some hellacious hits! I'd say he had balls of steel LOL!!

I keep thinking there just aren't enough people purely interested in football Xs-and-Os to fill the building, and how important it is to sell the overall game day experience as a fun outing, NOT just how great the football action actually is.

This seems to be part of the reason Ott and Sask and Ham have attracted younger crowds. They are not there to watch the game at all, in some cases. It grinds on us "real" fans, but if it's the only way to ensure the team/league stay in business, I guess we need to accept it and move forward.

while we're at it, baseball fanatics who object to people doing The Wave need to accept that too . it's something that's fun, and there aren't enough baseball purists to fill Skydome either. Gotta appeal to families and sports-unsophisticated types.
