    Cjfl 2023

The season has been under way for a few weeks out in BC, and has just started in Ontario and the prairies.

This guy on twitter always makes nice graphics of results and standings:

    H
amilton trounced GTA 51-0. But the Grizzlies have a better shot this week when they play Quinte.

I'm curious to see this year if Ottawa can give the top 2-3 teams a run for their money this year. But they lost to London 18-0 to start the season.

Junior football in the GTA is difficult and has been for many years. I remember in ‘88 when I played for Oshawa, we were lucky to have 10 players out for practice. All were offensive guys so at least I was on the same page with my backs and receivers, but it was as hard. We had so much talent, but no commitment.
It's us vs the rest of the country

Yikes, only 10 came out eh. That sounds like it could actually be dangerous come game time.

Here are the OFC players of the week:

Players of the Week: Week 1

    Everett Hanmer

We are pleased to announce our players of the week for week 1 of the regular season!
    OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

LJ DYER - #3 - RB, London Beefeaters
In a hard-hitting game on a rain soaked field in the nation’s capital to kick off the 2023 season, the veteran London ball carrier pounded the ball 23 times for a hard fought 110 yards and a touchdown ruining the Sooners’ home opener. LJ’s longest carry for the day went for 13 yards.

    DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Zach Chaddock #22 LB , Hamilton Hurricanes
The 2022 Outstanding Defensive Rookie of the Year picked up where he left off last year. In limited action where he led a stout Hamilton defence that saw the Hurricanes shut out GTA in the Grizzlies' home opener, Chaddock racked up 2 sacks, 3 tackles, one of which was a tackle for loss and recovered 1 fumble.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Luke LeMessurier, #3 REC, Hamilton Hurricanes
The personal protector on the Hamilton punt team turned in the most electric and unusual play of the weekend in the OFC when he astutely picked up the partially blocked Hamilton punt and raced 32 yards to the GTA end zone for the touchdown.

    Week 4 Preview:

    Ontario Conference

    St. Clair Saints @ Ottawa Sooners – Saturday August 19, 2:00pm – Lee’s Stadium | WATCH HERE

The defending Ontario champion Saints will hit the field for the first time this season after their game last weekend was postponed. They will head to the nation’s capital to face the Sooners. They have recruited another terrific class of players and are ready to take another run at the championship as the favourite coming into the season.
The Sooners are at home for the second straight game to open the season but are still looking for their first points. They were shutout last weekend by the visiting London Beefeaters 18-0. They will need to score early against the Saints or it will be a long afternoon.

    Players to Watch:

Saints – DB Nate Norton is back after his All-Canadian performance last season. The local Windsor product will be asked to lead this defence and do even more this season.

    Sooners
    – WR Marcus Lynch helped move the ball in their loss last weekend with six receptions for 65 yards. If the Sooners can get him the ball, he’ll make an impact offensively.

GTA Grizzles @ Quinte Skyhawks – Sunday August 20, 2:00pm – Loyalist College | WATCH HERE

Sunday afternoon the Grizzlies will hit the road for the first time after getting shutout 51-0 in their home opener last weekend. In order to build some confidence on the offensive side, they will need to finish some drives and put points on the board.
The Skyhawks enter their third season in the CJFL and are eager to take another step in their program’s history. They have a new head coach in Sean Mellor who was able to put his stamp on this 2023 roster early on and start to grow the culture he wants to see.

    Players to Watch:

Grizzlies - WR/KR Cliff Jerry Karingoh is a dangerous player with the ball in his hands.

    Skyhawks
    – WR Josiah Bowman returns and is looking to have a greater impact this season. He is dangerous with the ball in his hands, so the Skyhawks will no doubt create some plays for him.

Hamilton Hurricanes @ London Beefeaters – Sunday August 20, 5:00pm – City Wide Field | WATCH HERE

The Beefeaters will host their home opener and face one of their bitter rivals the Hamilton Hurricanes. Last weekend the Beefeaters shutout the Ottawa Sooners on the road putting up 197 rushing yards using four backs. Their defence played well forcing three turnovers.

Meanwhile the Hurricanes also recorded a shutout, hammering the GTA Grizzlies 51-0 and are on the road for the second straight game to open the season.

Rough outing for Ottawa. I guess they're not ready to join London and St. Clair in the upper tier of OFC.

And the Skyhawks are climbing in the standings while the Grizzlies remain at the bottom.

And London walks over Hamilton. Looks like London and St. Clair in the upper tier again. How will the middle tier shake out?

    Players of the Week:

    Ontario Conference
QB/WR Josiah Bowman – Quinte Skyhawks

The GTA Grizzlies had no answer for this multi-dimensional force on Sunday. Bowman went 12 of 18 for 143 yards with four of his completions resulting in touchdowns. On the receiving end he caught a pass for a 34-yard touchdown and for good measure he carried the ball four times for 30 yards in leading the Quinte Skyhawks to a blowout win over the visiting GTA Grizzlies.

    Ontario Conference
DB Teagan Good – Quinte Skyhawks

On Sunday, Good proved to be GREAT! For a Skyhawks secondary that allowed very little on Sunday Teagan Good led the way with two interceptions one of which was returned for 10 yards along with five pass breakups while also contributing four solo tackles for a very impressive 26 defensive points.

    Ontario Conference
LB Alexander Dolles – GTA Grizzlies

Despite the loss, the Grizzlies athletic linebacker proved to be a special teams demon. Dolles blocked two kicks which prevented the Skyhawks from extending their lead and he also contributed two solo special teams tackles.
