Game Thread: Calgary Stampeders @ Toronto Argonauts

CNE Game on Friday, August 25, 2023

Calgary seems to be the only team with Dinwiddie's number (though Kelly's injury played a significant factor), let's get a win over them with Montreal suddenly nipping at our heels.

My genuine concern moving forward is the involvement of Gittens in the passing game. Although Daniels, Coxie and Philipps have carried the load in the pass game it seems that Kurleigh has tailed off his game compared to last year.

I would think just by the eye test that Ungerer has better numbers in the recieving game that Gittens. (No way to know for sure, with the non-existent CFL stats).

Does it hurt us today, no. But we need Kurleigh to answer the call sometime in the next 10 Games.

Wait, are you implying there is a “Statistical Issue” in the CFL this season?

The site Stats Crew seems to have up to date, detailed CFL stats.

Gittens has more catches but Ungerer more yardage so far. I expect Gittens to start getting more targets, but who knows ?

Gittens ranks #3 in receptions among Argo players, but his YPC is only 10.5. I think he's been getting a lot of the screen stuff, which hasn't always been successful.

Gittens had a real connection with MBT. The Argos are really spreading it out this year which overall makes them harder to defend. I’m sure he will have a couple of big games down the stretch, but I don’t really care as long as the production continues to be spread out.

This! Love the idea of spreading the ball around to all weapons on offence; same with Harris able to come in to supplement Ouellette (like to see Adeboboye get a bit of work there too); Gittens could have some big games down the stretch, but as long as the offence keeps rolling. Pull Together !!!

Agree 100% OV, much harder to defend an offence that spreads the ball around which Kelly has excelled at so far this season.

Coming off a bye, in front of their largest home crowd of the year, against the only team they have lost to. My expectation is nothing short of a beat down. They will be locked in.

CFL writers unanimous in picking the Argos:

It’s been a season of more downs than ups for the Stampeders, but the highlight of their 2023 campaign to this point was their Week 9 win over the Argonauts. Three weeks later, the two reunite at BMO Field. The Argos are the favourites in this one (9.5 point favourites, FanDuel says) but it’s difficult to count the Stamps out of Friday’s game. These are two teams that know each other well, with flecks of the Stamps’ past successes entrenched in this Argos’ organization. While the Stamps have been inconsistent, when Jake Maier and his offensive teammates are in sync, they’re a tough opponent. The writers and fans lean to the East on this one, but the Stamps are capable of surprise.

    Writers: 100% Toronto
    Fans:89% Toronto

I just think that this is one of those games that the Argos refuse to lose; I suspect that they are still very ticked off about losing that game in Calgary and are extra motivated to win this one.
Chad Kelly + Dan Adeboboye + David Ungerer + Damonte Coxie + DaVaris Daniels + Dejon Brissett = Unstoppable Force

Gittens doesn’t get in behind the DB’s like Daniels and Coxie do. Kelly loves that perfectly timed long ball and MBT was not very accurate with those throws hence he loved the Gittens slants and outs.

Disagree. Kelly has been great on seam and out routes. Gittens is great on those. Prior to last game Daniels had 1 catch on a deep ball, late in Hamilton and that was on a double move. To say he regularly gets behind DB’s just isn’t true. He’s a seams and dig route guy mostly.

The fact is, Kelly is throwing to where the D dictates him to throw. It’s all about his reads and his confidence in those reads and not his receivers.

Brissett might be the fastest receiver in this Argo corps - they might try deep shots to him a bit more; but Coxie was doing great getting deep and has the big catch radius.

    PFF game preview:

    CALGARY STAMPEDERS VS. TORONTO ARGONAUTS

Three weeks ago, Calgary handed Toronto its first loss of the season. Since then, Toronto has bounced back with a big win while Calgary has lost two straight. As good as Calgary QB Jake Maier looked in that Toronto win (80.2 passing grade), that’s how much he’s struggled since (56.1 pass grade). Meanwhile, Toronto QB Chad Kelly bounced back big-time in Week 10, posting an 89.4 overall grade in that game. Toronto is also led by league-best do-it-all running back A.J. Ouellette, whose 88.2 overall grade is the third-highest grade among all qualified offensive players in the league. This game will likely come down to Maier. In Calgary wins, he has an 81.9 grade while, in losses, that drops to 55.5. If he plays well, Calgary wins. If not, they don’t.

MATCHUP TO WATCH: WR DAVARIS DANIELS, TORONTO VS. HB KOBE WILLIAMS, CALGARY

Daniels broke out for Toronto two weeks ago when he caught six passes for 180 yards, three TDs and a 90.7 receiving grade. Nonetheless, he had been having a solid season before that too. Daniels is currently the fourth-highest-graded slot WR in the league. His 14 explosive plays rank seventh. He’ll have a tough matchup this week against Williams, whose 78.1 coverage grade ranks ninth among CFL defenders. He’s allowing just 0.69 yards per coverage snap, a far cry from Daniels’ 2.30 yards per route run. Something will have to give in this matchup. Depending on which way it goes, that could decide the game.

PLAYER TO WATCH: RT DEJON ALLEN, TORONTO

It isn’t always easy to watch offensive linemen. If you’re not noticing them, that generally means they are doing a good job. When it comes to pass-blocking, no offensive lineman is noticed less than Allen, as his 80.2 pass-blocking grade leads the entire CFL this year. He’s allowed just one sack and a mere seven total pressures over 234 pass-blocking snaps. The last time he played Calgary was actually his worst game of the year, and he allowed just two quarterback hurries. That’s how well he’s played this season. Allen deserves to be watched this week as he matches up with Stampeders’ edge rushers Julian Howsare and Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund just to see if he can shut them down as he’s done all season long.

It looks as though Carey will be out for this game. At this point, I might prefer to face Carey than Mills.

I think Carey is the better back, and Argos benefit from not having him in the line-up. I like Mills too, but from an Argos perspective, nice to not have to face a fresh back all game. Hopefully the Argos will challenge them to try and throw more downfield and not allow them to nickel and dime all game. Even if that doesn't result in TD's, it would be nice for the D to get off the field more frequently.

Great to see Coxie get a 17 yard reception on the first play from scrimmage. He adds another dimension to the Argo offence with his long catches. Too bad the drive ended with an interception of a Kelly pass to Gittens.
