Saskatchewan Roughriders' great George Reed passes away

One of the best running backs in CFL history, and along with Ron Lancaster, perhaps the individual most identifiable with the Roughriders franchise.

    RIP.

On CBC News, George Reed in a taped past interview said that when he arrived in Regina, the HC said he was too small to be a fullback and that he would be a backup that was used sparingly. It sounded so strange to hear the guy I considered the very definition of a CFL fullback described that way. Reed then said that if it hadn't been for his stubbornness to prove the HC wrong, he would have packed his bags and headed to the NFL. Fortunately, the CFL, unlike many other times, did not screw up getting the greatest fullback in CFL history, at a time when fullback, unlike today, was central to the running game, and not primarily a blocking back.

The tributes written about George Reed over the last day are really touching - it's clear he was liked and admired both on and off the field.
