    Corey Mace extended!

This is gigantic, and completely unexpected. Wow! Well done, Pinball et al!

DOUBLE BLUE EXTEND CONTRACT OF DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR COREY MACE

TORONTO - The Toronto Argonauts Football Club announced today they have extended the contract of Defensive Coordinator Corey Mace.

Mace, in his second season coaching the Argos defence, has led a unit that leads the CFL in sacks (54), interceptions (22), turnovers (42), opponent big plays (20, seven better than second place), opponent rush yards (79.6), is second in offensive points allowed (20.2) and opponents yards/play (5.98) while ranking third in offensive touchdowns allowed (31). The British Columbia native joined the Boatmen at the start of 2022, saw three of his players become Division All-Stars, and was integral in helping the Argonauts capture their 18th Grey Cup championship in November. The three-time Grey Cup champion joined Toronto from Calgary where he coached the defensive line from 2016-2021, winning a championship in 2018. Before turning to coaching Mace played defensive line for the Stampeders from 2010-2015 where he would win his first Grey Cup in 2014. The University of Wyoming product was originally drafted in the second round of the 2007 CFL Draft by Winnipeg before signing with the Buffalo Bills where he played from 2007-2009.

"Corey is a leader, first and foremost," said Argonauts Head Coach Ryan Dinwiddie. "He preaches accountability and is able to get the best out of his guys each and every day. He's a great coach, a better person and we are thrilled to keep him in Toronto."

What great news to get the day before your last regular home game of the season. It really is becoming evident that on the football ops side of things the Argos are building a culture of cohesion and solidarity that is making people want to stay. This bodes well for the future and will make having consistently strong teams every year more of a reality. Kudos to them.

I was for sure thinking he would be the next Head Coach of Hamilton or Edmonton or the next job available. Awesome Surprise!

I imagine that there is an "out" in this contract for a head coaching position or some kind of promotion elsewhere but this also puts Mace in a good situation where he doesn't necessarily have to jump at a HC job in a situation that isn't optimal.

I also note - from looking at the Argos' website - that they don't currently have an "assistant head coach" so it's possible for them to slide Mace into that spot and give him a promotion that way.

Agree this is great news. The Argos have been terrific this season, locking in talented people with longer contracts. Think it bodes well for the future!!!

Not all assistants or coordinators want to be HC. I hope he enjoys being here working with Pinball, Dinwiddie and doesn’t want to leave a good situation for a dumpster fire.

He definitely should wait until he's offered a really good situation to become a head coach. I don't think Ott or Sask constitute one of those at the moment, with uncertainty about the GM position in both markets. I could see him someday going back to Calgary if and when Dickenson kicks himself upstairs. Or maybe he replaces Dinwiddie down the road if RD gets a good opportunity in the NFL (which is possible in a year or two if he continues to have the sort of success he has had so far). But for now, at least, it seems Pinball et al have set us up even better for sustained success on the field.

    Congrats to Corey Mace

A well deserved extension, and the Argos are fortunate to have him.

I think coaches other than head coaches can make the CFL Hall of Fame. Barron Miles a few years ago comes to mind. So you can have a great career and be recognized for your accomplishments without the pressures of being a head coach. Good luck to Mr. Mace.

Riderstronson over on riderfans is cutely suggesting Mace might still wind up in Sask. I'd love to know what that is based on. Sask is a sh*t show at the moment, with a president the fanbase hates, a GM who's a lame duck, and a No. 1 QB who's 38 and recovering from a very serious injury. Sounds like just the kind of place a guy like Mace would love to hang his hat.

On a more serious note, does anyone think he -- or anyone -- would accept a combined GM-HC job? Based on how well things have gone for Dave Dickenson, Chris Jones and Orlondo Steinauer of late, is there any way anyone can successfully do two such all-encompassing jobs?

A combined HC/GM job may be too much for someone who has lots of experience as a HC but it definitely would be too much for a first-time head coach.

This interview with Mace by Mike Hogan is quite revealing IMO: https://www.argonauts.ca/2023/10/13/...tays-in-place/

Mace is definitely very happy with his current situation in Toronto.

Such excellent news and a credit to the organization for being so proactive with the extensions this season!
