I agree, but teams were tampering anyway and will continue to do so. Thankfully, there haven't been all that many agreements announced during the week. I think there were way more last year.

I have to assume the length of the negotiating window was bargained collectively with the players, so it wouldn't be changed without the PA's consent. I don't see any reason why players would want to shorten the period, and I doubt the league would, either. There has been CFL news -- and fan interest/engagement -- every day for the past week. Sure, the biggest signings were leaked in the first few days, but there are still deals being made, and still some big names on the board. What's the downside of the current schedule?

Then simply announce the free agency start date and have at it.
Much more interesting when the deals started being announced on the day of free agency.

I'm frustrated by this tampering window myself, but it's simply because the Argos have lost guys.

The theoretical benefit of the current system is that it allows the player's previous team three days to consider whether or not it wants to try to outbid opponents for the player. Any offers made last week are legally binding and cannot be rescinded, but the player can shop those offers to his previous team and potentially use them as leverage. Chances are that every player we have heard about so far has not only agreed to a deal but also made a commitment to the new team that he won't back out over the weekend by re-signing with his old club. But the players we have not heard about (Oakman, White, etc.) might have some nice offers in hand, but no commitment to accept any of them until they hear what their old club is offering. So here might still be some surprises forthcoming.

I don't think any of us were complaining two years ago when we signed Davis, McManis, Amos and Lawrence. I'm pretty sure at least some of those deals were leaked in advance of the signing date.

TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts Football Club announced today they have extended Canadian OL Ryan Hunter.
Hunter, 28, suited up for 18 games in 2023 for an offensive line that allowed a league low 19 sacks, 14 clear of the next best team in the CFL and the second-best mark in Argo history. For his efforts, the 6’3, 315lb offensive lineman was nominated as a CFL All-Star for the first time in his two-year CFL career. The North Bay native joined the Boatmen in 2022 and played five games down the stretch for the team including the Eastern Final and the Grey Cup becoming one of just a handful of players to win both a Grey Cup and Super Bowl. Hunter was a first round draft choice of the Argos in 2018 but opted to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs where he would spend the next two seasons, including being on the active roster for Super Bowl LIV. The Bowling Green product would sign with the Los Angeles Chargers in October of 2020 and spend two seasons on the practice squad before his move to the Argos.

Interesting (and good, obviously) move. Hunter was not listed as a FA, and the release does not state for how long he's been extended. So we don't know if this was just a reworked existing deal or a move to lock him up beyond this year. At least we know he will manning the left guard spot this year.

Despite a number of key departures, I really like what the front office has been able to do this offseason. Excited to see the next Peters, Hendrix and Barlow emerge.

It's a two-year extension through 2025 and '26.

If 3DN is correct, it is indeed a 2-yr extension and he will make close to $300k in the third year.

Argos are investing heavily on their line. Keep Kelly healthy and on his feet = success. Scouting must feel its easier
to recruit other positions like DB, LB

It will also help Kelly with a good run game. Whoever replaces AJ will have success in this offence.

Another nice piece of business: Argos have extended Adeboboye. He is heading into his third season and would have become a free agent a year from now.

One thing Argos have done very well this off-season is prep for the future. They have taken several key pieces out of next year's free-agent class by signing them to deals that run through 2025 and in some cases 2026. We are not going to be raided next year the way we were this year. Well done, Messrs. Magri, Murphy and Clemons.
