I feel similarly, AV. I hope that Bell or Fields get the first crack although Eiben may be okay at this point too, after gaining some additional experience.

Coach Mace would have been my first choice if I were the Riders but it sounds like it was his by default behind Milanovich and Pierce. Too bad for our sake the others dropped out but I wish him all the best!

    Coach Bell, you're up!

Negative; Mace was the first choice, over Buck P, per a Riderfans source I trust. Also talk there he will bring Bell with him as a D coach.

I think Corey Mace had easily the best defensive personnel in the league to work with — they could have had 5 all-stars on D — but Mace clearly didn’t deliver the league’s very best defence, so it could be argued he underachieved a bit.

We were 8th in passing yards allowed and last in pass TDs coughed up, so there’s room for improvement. But I’ll bet RD will want a guy who shares the Mace philosophy on some things, like the full platoon on the DLine.

I'm sure there is not a coach, GM or QB in the league who would rate the Argos as having the eighth or ninth-best pass defence in the league. Many of the yards and TDs they surrendered were in second halves with big leads. Using the eyeball test rather than stats, I would rate the 2023 Argos no worse than second or third overall defence. In their one playoff game, they surrendered less than 200 yards passing and held Stanback to 15.

Did Buck pull out of the running because he knew he wasn't getting the job?

The Argos also lost 2 very good veteran D-halfs during the season and kept on rolling pretty strong on D. Points and yards given up in the 2nd half of games when the team has a decent lead or in the 2nd half of the season in a bunch of meaningless games, are not strong indicators of much IMO.

Not sure who had the better overall D last season? Argos was the best group by quite a bit IMO.

I agree. Only Wpg and (last half of the season) Mtl were in the conversation IMO.

Well, he's already made 1 bad decision as a head coach then. Brett Lauther may set a record for scoring.

LOL! I was thinking the same, typical sunshine and lollipops optimism from the new HC.
Harris is coming off a serious leg injury with a $250k roster bonus due February 1st which makes it no sure bet that he will make it to training camp IMO.

The 2024 edition of the Toronto Argonauts D signed a pair of players today. DB Jordan Jones and DL Tyler Williams who appeared in the 2023 season finale but didn’t record any stats.

I wish both these youngsters well in their respective pro football journeys.

I suspect the 2024 Argonauts D will look quite different in both personnel and scheme.

Great to get Giffen (a potential starter, IMO) and Carnell back. The others are prospects who might or might not pan out, nice to have them available. We are going to need some new o-linemen when we say goodbye to Bladek and Richards (and hopefully not to Ciraco) so Paradis would seem to have a shot at being kept in 2024 despite not having started in college this past season.

Giffen played very well when he had the opportunity. If the team losses Ciraco, Nicastro could move to C and Giffen to R.G. The question is, who will be backups for the OL Wonder if Doxtator will finally sign with the team? Carnell was very effective in 2022. If he can return to that same form, he will challenge for a starting spot in the secondary.

I'm curious to know the story on Carnell as it pertains to the 2023 season. He got injured late in 2022 and I think it was just before the playoffs started that year. Originally, I had heard that he'd be good to go by Labour Day, but then he ended up missing the entire season. Given that there were injuries sustained by Amos and Daniel, he must've suffered a setback that resulted in him missing the entire season instead of just half.

Do you think Carnell would have an idea who the DC is going to be? My rational being would a player commit not knowing what kind of schemes would be implemented?

He has too small a sample size to not sign a contract when offered to him. He played well when he played, but is still relatively unproven.

He probably didn't have any leverage coming off an injury that kept him out the entire year.
