Most Significant Touchdowns in Argos History

It doesn't necessarily have to be a Grey Cup game, you could also define significant as important, too, but what are some that come to mind. I'll start with one, and people can add as they wish:

Arland Bruce III kick-return touchdown in the 2004 Eastern Final. The Argos had lost two straight Eastern Finals to the Alouettes, and Montreal had just taken a 7-0 lead. Bruce's kick-return TD in response helped Toronto keep pace, and while it was a lower-scoring game, the Argos eventually came on top 26-18.

The Rocket's return TD (with the beer can thrown at him) in the 91 GC; which was preceded by Ed Berry's pick six on Calgary's opening play of the game

Pinball's game opening kick-off TD return in an East play-off (not sure what year - was vs. Montreal?)

Cassius Vaughn’s 103 yard FR TD late in the 2017 Grey Cup in snowy Ottawa. Not a lucky play as Argo haters would have you believe. Both Jermaine Gabriel and Cleyon Lainge ( if memory serves) didn’t give up on that play, forcing that fumble.

Cedric Minter back to back weeks with the winning TD in the final minute in the '83 Eastern final and Grey Cup. You can't have the 2nd without the first, but I would say the one that officially ended a 31 year championship drought has to be the one.

The suspense of that last drive of the 1983 Eastern final was brutal but what a feeling when they scored!

Pinball's winning TD in the 1997 Eastern Final was as dramatic as it gets.

It was incredibly dramatic, but it was the preceding play that was third down. With 53 seconds left, on third and about 18 inches, Minter squeezed through for just slightly more than needed. It was on the next play, on first down with 30 seconds left, that he scored.

Wilder's reception was a huge play on third down -- undoubtedly the most clutch play of that game -- but it was not a TD. It was followed by two more plays: a completion to Armanti Edwards at the one, then a plunge for the TD by Cody Fajardo.

I'm with you Angelo regarding Minter. I am old enough to remember those days (early 80's) when the Argos still mattered in Toronto. As an honourable mention I'm going with a tie between Posey & Vaughn in the 2017 Grey Cup, because I was at that game, which was an incredible experience.

Both good choices. Argos were heavy underdogs going into that game, and they really struggled offensively against Calgary for a few years leading up to it. If I had to pick 1, it would be Vaughan's as the game was done if that never were to haopen.

And after the 2017 Grey Cup Argo fans, unbeknownst to them would suffer through back to back 4-14 seasons then a canceled season. Thanks to Vaughn, Argo fans only had to wait 5 years between Cup victories instead of 10.

The Minter TDs were more significant I will concede.

From 2016 to 2019, the Argos went 22-50 during the regular season - only slightly better than the horrific 1992-95 era (20-52). The one bright spot was the second half of the 2017 season and that march to the Grey Cup.

    But what a bright spot.

I've supported this club since I was a young lad (50 now), and the one saving grace of embracing the pain of the many write-off seasons is that they've always paid us back with Grey Cups. And some of them were true story book championships.

I look back at the old-timer die-hards (and yes, I know that to the kids, I am now among them) and the Grey Cup dry spell pre '83 and I am awestruck in regards to their emotional fortitude.

A few that spring to mind somewhat randomly:

Martin Cox vs. Mtl and Cedric Minter vs. Cal in 1981. Gave us our only two wins that season. Cox's was so improbable as to almost defy belief; the Minter TD that culminated a late drive orchestrated by Holloway provided a sense of catharsis that might never be topped.

Terry Greer vs. Edmonton -- two of them -- in the 1982 home game. The first gave us a huge halftime lead that had fans believing Argos might be for real; the second erased any doubt about it after Edm had crawled within two points.

Greer, Pearson and JoJo Heath in the 1982 Eastern Final. Greer set the table for the win with a superb adjustment while being covered by Carl Brazley. Pearson's TD (longest of his career, I believe) in the thick fog made it look as if Argos were going to run away with the game. Health's pick six, while seemingly meaningless in a 37-point victory, was the definitive proof that Argos were going to the Grey Cup, and triggered an explosion of joy in the stands at the Ex.

Minter's two TDs in 1983 mentioned above.

Tank Landry, Gill Fenerty and Danny Barrett in the 1987 Grey Cup: even though we lost, all were undeniably thrilling.

Rocket's punt-return TD in the 1991 Eastern Final to make the score 22-0 in first quarter.

All four TDs in 1991 Grey Cup, but the one I'm most fond of is DK Smith's in the third quarter. How Dunigan threw such an excellent pass with a fractured clavicle is beyond me.

Pinball opening-kickoff TD in 1996 EF, and his game-ending TD reception a year later.

Adrion Smith's game-clinching TD in the 1996 Grey Cup.

John Avery's longish TD run late in the 2004 EF.

Ricky Ray's unexpected scramble for a TD in the 2012 EF.

The Posey and Vaughn TDs mentioned above.

Kurleigh Gittens' TD in 2022 EF that essentially slammed the door on what was shaping up as an Alouettes comeback.

I'm sure I could come up with many more if I thought about it longer. Obviously they can't all be the "most important," but they are all hugely memorable to me.

What's weird about Paul's great list is that I remember the TDs from the 1980s and 1990s better than some of the ones he mentions from the 2000s.

Paul reminded me of Gil Fenerty's TD reception in the 87 GC - what a great play (i think it was likely a wheel route?) and a RB catching a pass and going for a long TD is more uncommon plus spectacular.

I also have to go with one of Leon McQuay's long runs in his first Argo days - a powerful RB with big-time speed, exploding thru the line and pulling away from all defenders (80 some yarder - maybe a couple of those ?) was amazing to see.
