    Good times. Darn good times.

Interesting to note that there was no Labour Day Classic games with the Cats in these years.

For a few years in the 1980s (1982-86), Montreal was the Ticats' Labour Day opponent. In 1981, Edmonton played a memorable Labour Day game in Hamilton which ended in a tie.

Every home game I was drunk. I don't even have to remember it's just what we did. Thanks to the fine people at GO for getting me most of the way home.

This is a gem of a post, ...lol, not many guys would admit that they were shitfaced at every home game...lol. I remember being at a game during this period with an older brother who was of drinking age, I'd just become a teen so it never crossed my mind, but some fans would make me laugh my head off at the games because I could tell they'd had more than enough....they'd be screaming at players from 30 or 40 rows on the 1st base side, where the seats in that section veered away from the playing field...if I remember CNE stadium, I believe Section 2 or 4 which were located near the end zone on the newly built 1st base/right field side for baseball which was pretty much behind the huge scoreboard was known for drunken shenanigans...I think some of the behaviour may have gone a little too far, let's face it, they were'nt family friendly sections were they. I remember reading that the Jays offices had urine stains on their ceiling from people peeing in the stands...I don't know if that's true, or whether that was an exaggeration maybe even perpetrated by them or the media. (In hindsight, it would not surprise me) Maybe it was rainwater that would stain when combined with insulation or whatever building material it mixed with...who knows...anyways I remember reading it.

    1981 Labour Day....Edmonton 34, Hamilton 34 in a great game.
    1982 Labour Day ...Hamilton 28, Montreal 9...
I remember the Argos were 5 pts up on the Ticats with a week off after beating the Lions 20-19 in Vancouver on Aug 28, a Saturday night game at old Empire Stadium. This made the Argos 5-2-1, while the Cats were 3-4. After beating Montreal 28-9 on the Sept 6 Labour Day, they would beat the Argos at the CNE on the Friday Night, just 4 days later 30-25 to put them 1 pt behind the boatmen at 5-4. The Boatmen fell to 5-3-1. The Argos would go on to finish the season in 1st one game ahead of the Cats at 9-6-1. The Cats finished 8-7-1. Hamilton could have had a shot at first on the last Sunday of the season, if the Argos had not beaten Ottawa to clinch the East on the last Saturday of the regular season. With 2nd spot clinch the Ticats still played hard at Ivor Wynne vs the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and prevented the Bombers from clinching first place in the West by beating them 24-21. The Eskimos clinched 1st place on the last Sunday by beating Saskatchewan in Regina. Both the Esks and Bombers finished 11-5 with the Esks winning the tiebreaker for first based on their head to head meetings and their points scored. Winnipeg had beaten the Esks at Commonwealth 32-26, in what probably was one of the best games of the season in early August, while the Eskimos would not lose a game in the 2nd half of the season and whip the Bombers at Winnipeg 33-17 to win the head to head point differential and take the division because of it.

Going back to Labour day games at Ivor Wynne, the Cats would host Montreal again in '83 and possibly from 84 through to 86. I remember the Argos losing a terrible Labour Day in Calgary in 1985 to a terrible Stamps team that was in last place. They had also played the Stamps in Calgary on Labour Day in 1981. The Argo-Ticat rivalry was finally renewed at Ivor Wynne Stadium in 1987, when the Argos got a big victory in front of the largest crowd of the season, and maybe in years at Ivor Wynne with over 24K.

Oh there was plenty of guys that would piss in the stands. No word of a lie. I had seats in the Scotia Bank Section which was along the 3rd base line and I remember getting on the dugout with a few other hammered buddies which isn't saying much as everyone in the stadium was hammered and we cut up a TiCat jersey. Remember those cheesy thin ones you used to be able to buy at the CNE. I remember running up behind Ontario Premier Bill Davis who was a huge Argo fan and slapping him so hard he just about fell down. I said how about that win Billy? Those were great times. I remember our section being like a party. I actually took a bus trip with a bunch of guys I met in that section to Grey Cup 86 in Montreal. Did an all nighter at a guys house in Scarberia before heading to the bus station and the party never stopped the whole trip.

    Cool

    Exhibition Stadium was FUN !!!

Yeah, I was drinkin' too. Never got really shit-faced, since we always had a puff of the good stuff.

Sitting in the South Bleachers, there would be a Police Constable who patrolled the walkway at the top of the bleachers (I've told this story before, but it's worth repeating). He patrolled back and forth, one end to the other. Depending on the wind direction (east or west), when the Constable passed us one way, we'd walk up to this same walkway, and walk in the other direction, sparking up a spliff. Fun times! Hard to remember the games though. But it doesn't matter; we were living in the moment. And still are.

    Cheers !

Gill, your posts are always generally awesome but this one is especially so. Love hearing the Exhibition Stadium memories. This would have been around the time my older brother took me to my 1st Argos game. I believe it was an Argo loss to the ticats in Sept. 82 (friday night game). I was quite young so the on field stuff i really don't remember. I do remember the place being packed ( google search puts atten. at 53 thou that night) , And we sat at the west end of the grandstand. After the game we were walking past the east end gate on the way home and 2 guys were absolutely kicking the living $#!% out of each other right at the entrance with no sight of anyone being brave enough to put a stop to it. The Ticat fan was a pretty strong athletic looking type wearing a Ticats jersey. The Argos fan was pretty skinny. He was sporting the whole kenora tuxedo look (jean jacket/jeans/sneakers) and was rocking one hell of a mullet. The prototypical Toronto early 80s rocker who looked like he could use a good meal. And i'll tell ya, the Toronto rocker guy gave the Jock ticat fan all he could handle. I was thouroughly impressed. To be so young and to be exposed to something like that has stayed with me into adulthood. Most people would have been horrified to see such a nasty fight but that memory has stayed burned in my memory and represents the passion and intensity that is the CFL.

For some reason I'll never forget the blowout loss to Calgary in '83. Calgary QB Bernard Quarles had the game of his life, and I thought he was going to be a star, but it neve happened.

That game came less than a week after the 50-16 Argo win over Hamilton. The Argos simply weren't ready for that Calgary game and that loss was probably not the worst thing that could have happened to them.

I could and can still walk home pretty good. Although it took me to my last year in Mississauga in 02 to pass out after a game and badailis on the train and miss Port Credit. I had a bag on Cinnabon goodies. I got off in Clarkson and was going to walk until I found a cap. Luckily there was one close.
My first game was with my mom back in the early 70's and you do remember the crazy stuff. I remember what I believed to be a 26er now to be tossed from the stands just missing the first row. Then some crazy Green Rider fan was being carried by a bunch of cops down the stairs on the covered section. He was going insane.

My first game was with my mom back in the early 70's and you do remember the crazy stuff. I remember what I believed to be a 26er now to be tossed from the stands just missing the first row. Then some crazy Green Rider fan was being carried by a bunch of cops down the stairs on the covered section. He was going insane.

great stuff, Ya, its tame today by comparison. The yellow skydome gestapo are a real killjoy. It's important to keep it safe but i actually saw a few of those yellow barnyard commandos telling a ticat fan to keep it down last season.
