"I was being interviewed about the wide world of sports media on a radio show last week when I was asked a question I've heard dozens of times: Why does the CFL insist on going head-to-head with the NFL?
My answer, which is basically the same answer I've been giving for years, is that Sunday is a good day to draw people to a stadium and despite the relatively big TV contract the CFL is still a gate-driven league. Secondly, the CFL has nothing to fear from the NFL when it comes to drawing TV viewers.
That certainly was borne out by the ratings from last Sunday. The 4 p.m. CFL game between Saskatchewan and WInnipeg averaged 1.1 million viewers on TSN. The 4 p.m. NFL game between San Francisco and Dallas averaged 683,000 viewers... "

Here are the most-watched sports events on English-language television for the past weekend, according to BBM Canada overnight ratings:
1. CFL, Roughriders at Blue Bombers, Sunday, TSN: 1,107,000
2. MLB, Blue Jays at Red Sox, Friday, Sportsnet: 821,000
3. CFL, Stampeders at Eskimos, Saturday, TSN: 753,000
4. NFL, 49ers at Cowboys, Sunday, CTV: 683,000
5. CFL, Lions at RedBlacks, Friday, TSN: 668,000
6. NFL, Early games, Sunday, CTV: 601,000
7. NFL, Colts at Broncos, Sunday, CTV: 595,000 (NBC viewers not measured)
8. MLB, Blue Jays at Red Sox, Saturday, Sportsnet: 528,000
9. NFL, Giants at Lions, Monday, TSN: 495,000
10. NFL, Chargers at Cardinals, Monday, TSN: 430,000
11. CFL, Ticats at Alouettes, Sunday, TSN: 413,000 (RDS viewers not measured)
12. MLB, Blue Jays at Red Sox, Sunday, Sportsnet: 346,000

16. Auto racing, NASCAR Sprint Cup, Saturday, TSN2: 192,000 (Fox viewers not measured)
16. NFL, Patriots at Dolphins, Sunday, TSN2: 192,000 (CBS viewers not measured)
18. Auto racing, F1 Italian Grand Prix, Sunday, TSN: 170,000

20. Tennis, U.S. Open women's final, Sunday, TSN2: 138,000* (CBS audience not measured)
21. Equestrian, Spruce Meadows Grand Slam, Saturday, CBC: 126,000
The NFL early game beat out the Ticats-Alouettes game. We'll have to watch that trend over the next couple of weeks. It was two eastern teams on a very nice day, but if all-eastern games were to continue to be beaten out by the NFL I don't think it would help counter the argument that pro-NFLers have about the majority of CFL ratings coming from western teams.
TORONTO ARGONAUTS FOOTBALL CLUB
GREY CUP CHAMPIONS: 1914, 1921, 1933, 1937, 1938, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1950, 1952, 1983, 1991, 1996, 1997, 2004, 2012, 2017, 2022
Early 'games' CTV airs 3 or 4 different 1pm start games across the country depending on the region and without RDS numbers we don't have a complete picture.
That proves that CFL has drawing power on it's own as opposed to sum of 3-4 NFL games totaling more than 1 CFL game.
Personally with both games airing on ESPN. I would really like to see those ratings.
This guy seems to be keeping up with ratings south of the boarder. Maybe I'll shoot him an email

Try this site, they've been tracking CFL ratings on ESPN all season:

Keeping track of that one too. Not bad that CFL games are getting 150k + south of the border. I'll post an update when I find something
Als/Ticats game had ratings of 160k and the Riders/Bombers game 104k

TFC. 14k. (No ... not joking)

Ha ha ha, TFC drawing less than family and friends.
Our CFL numbers as expected are getting stronger in the fall.
I was curious how the Argos would do against TFC, a team that is considered by some Toronto media as "Main 4 Sports Teams in Toronto" head to head for ratings....the people have spoken loud and clear.....good choice too I might add
Again, where is the Argos PR. All we here is Doom & Gloom, and they don't fight back. If your the most watch sporting event in the country ... should people be talking about you folding. Come'on where are the Argos PR people! I know they read this site. Come'on guys!
Look at TFC, they can fill their stadium, yet don't have any fans. And the Argos have fans, and can't fill the seats.
Just shows, the live event market is a different market that general fan market.
Fans are on strike until the argos do something stadium wise.
DOGS OF THE WEEK: Toronto FC continues to create more interest for its boardroom machinations than what takes place on the pitch. Saturday's game against Chicago drew an average of 14,000 viewers to Sportsnet 360. Regardless of the possible explanations, that's as close to being a non-entity as you get. Coming close to that kind of irrelevance was Canada's Davis Cup matches against Colombia. They could do no better than 35,000 on Sportsnet 360 on Sunday.

Yeah I went to a game a few weeks ago and there were a Lot of empty seats. However I think that most professional sports teams report Tickets Sold as opposed to actual attendance in the stands.
I don't care for Toronto FC as much as the next guy, but I really have to ask in what way does making fun of Toronto FC's TV ratings help the Toronto Argonaut Football Club?
TORONTO ARGONAUTS FOOTBALL CLUB
GREY CUP CHAMPIONS: 1914, 1921, 1933, 1937, 1938, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1950, 1952, 1983, 1991, 1996, 1997, 2004, 2012, 2017, 2022
It still, in my opinion, has nothing to do with Argonaut football. I'm not unpleased at Toronto FC's misfortunes either due to the sentiments of some of their fans, but the focus here should be on the fact that the Argos drew 871k on Saturday and not that Toronto FC only drew 14k.
