Here's an article about Johnny Forzani and how he plays the most outer receiver position, Z much like Spencer Watt. I encourage you to read it, you might learn something and have a greater appreciation for the Z position.

Z for zero! Well why don't coaches a try a new approach to throw everyone off and actually work in some plays for these guys. Lets start with Watt on Monday and it should fool Hamilton.

Nice to see a news story supporting what some of us have been saying for weeks. As Ravi (I think) said, the second wideout position was just as ignored when Geoff Townsend was playing it 30 years ago as it is today. It's a function of the wide field and teams' desires to spread the defence.

Having said that, there is one ridiculous statement in that piece -- that all of the great receivers in history have been slotbacks. Obviously the writer is too young to remember Terry Greer, Merv Fernandez or Brian Kelly, to name just three of many outstanding wideouts to have played in this league.

The writer of that article is lumping the Z position in with the short side wide out position and these are two different things. However, the major point about the Z position being somewhat of an afterthought in the offence is correct.
