TORONTO -- The Flyin' Hawaiian is the CFL's outstanding player.

Versatile Chad Owens of the Toronto Argonauts claimed the honour Thursday night at the league's awards banquet. The 30-year-old native of Hawaii got the nod ahead of Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish in voting conducted by the Football Reporters of Canada as well as the eight CFL head coaches.

The 2012 season has been a magical one for both Owens and the Argos.

Owens led the CFL in receiving (94 catches for 1,328 yards and six TDs) and return yards (2,510) and accumulated a league-record 3,863 all-purpose yards. Owens, affectionately dubbed The Flyin' Hawaiian, is a big reason why Toronto is making its first Grey Cup appearance since '04.

Owens and the Argos are indeed in the 100th Grey Cup, where they will face Cornish and the Stampeders on Sunday at Rogers Centre.

Through all the ups and downs of the last three years, Owens has never stopped fighting for the extra yard figuratively and literally. Great job Chad! Return one (no two) all the way against Calgary!

"I've got plenty of motivation; I just want to go out there and be the best every time I step on the field," said Owens. "That's why we play. We don't play to be second place."

Other winners announced during the evening included Calgary Stampeder Jon Cornish as the Most Outstanding Canadian (beating out Montreal Alouettes linebacker Shea Emry) Winnipeg Blue Bombers receiver Chris Matthews as the Most Outstanding Rookie (beating out B.C. Lions defensive lineman Jabar Westerman), Jovan Olafioye of the B.C. Lions as the Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman (beating out Josh Bourke of the Montreal Alouettes), Edmonton Eskimos' J.C. Sherritt as the Most Outstanding Defensive Player (beating out Emry) and Chris Williams of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as the Most Outstanding Special Teams Player (beating out B.C. returner Tim Brown).
Montreal Alouettes receiver Brian Bratton won the Tom Pate Memorial Award for his leadership on the field and in his community.
