Just subscribed to ESPN Classic to watch some old school NASCAR. I see they have alot of Canadian content and tonight it's an August game from 1987. Calgary vs. Ottawa.

ESPN Classic typically shows CFL classics on Tuesday nights and sometimes on weekends. As discussed, however, the range of games are limited. They tend to have Grey Cups going back quite a way, but otherwise are limited to a bunch of old CFN games from 1987-1990. Lord knows how many times the 70-18 massacre of the Stampeders by the Argos from September 1990 has been shown on that station. They also have some games from 1994-1995 and then finally from about 2000 to the present. But, no classic regular season games from the run n' shoot offense that the Argos ran, the Rocket year and the Flutie era.

This was an entertaining game and one of the greatest comebacks in CFL history but the folks at ESPN Classics did not do it any favours in its editing. I believe that they have edited out at least two Calgary fourth quarter TDs in this game. Strangely enough, the Stamps actually fired their head coach, Bob Vespaziani, after this game.

ESPN Classics came on around 2000 or 2001 IIRC and I have been waiting since that time for them to expand their CFL offerings to no avail. You would think that there has to be at least a few CTV telecasts from the 1970s and early 1980s that were preserved and that they could show but no luck so far.

I really doubt there are any CTV broadcasts left. The network reused tape all the time. CBC also has shockingly few intact games, judging by what's listed in its archive. I went looking for one particular game from 1982 as part of my research for the book (and because I wanted to see it again) and found it in the archive listing, but when I pursued it I was told it was actually not available.

how do you guys explain all the 70's 80's 4 minute game clips on Youtube?? Were these not taken from full games that were aired publically at some point after their original airing? Or are these just a part of the original uploaders personally taped games that will never find there way to the public in their entirety?

I am guessing that most of those are part of his/her personal collection. However, the curious ones to me are the ones from the 1970s with the CBC logo in the corner such as this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=li3P--l7iJY

There were no logos on the screen back in those days (I think that we only started seeing logos in the early 1990s) so this would appear to have been recently digitized with the logo. How did this individual get their hands on this?

Some games from the CBC archive have found their way into the hands of collectors. I have obtained a few of them, and I'm not the only one. But again, I suspect that there is little in the cupboard beyond what is already out there.

There is a guy who posts seemingly random four-minute excerpts from old games on Youtube. I don't really see a lot of value in that compared to clips specifically chosen for their importance to the game or some other historical reason, but I guess it is better than nothing.

As a reminder, I have tons of Argo and CFL clips up at http://www.youtube.com/user/pxw13

And clips about the 1981-83 Argos are up at my other channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/BouncingBackBook
