Tyree barnes reporting for duty with argos

The Toronto Argonauts Football Club has enlisted WR Tyree Barnes for active duty at 2012 training camp. The U.S. Navy graduate has returned from 24 months active service where he served off the coast of eastern Africa.

Lieutenant Junior Grade, and receiver, Tyree Barnes played four seasons at Navy and as a senior he accounted for nearly half the number of receptions his team made that entire season. Barnes signed with the New England Patriots after college and was immediately placed on the Reserve/Military List for the next 24 months as he reported for active duty with the U.S. Navy.

During his service, he was an electronics warfare officer who dealt with counter-missile activity. His most recent tour (2010) was off the coast of Somalia where his ship, the USS Gonzalez (DDG-66), worked anti-piracy missions. Barnes returned to New England last July and spent all of training camp there.

An impressive catch he made in the video! If he caught 20 passes in 2008 and that was nearly half of the number of receptions than Navy certainly doesn't throw the ball very much, but I think I already knew that about the Midshipmen. Here's a little more about him:

Solid signing by the Argos, has great hands, runs under a 4.5, has decent size, might take him a while to get the CFL game, but clearly has talent. With Ballard, Boldin, Bradwell, Feoli-Gudino, Fortson, Kouame, Mann, Owens, Strickland, Tranks, Watt, and Durie, there seems to be a lot of potential with the receiving core, which hopefully translates well on the field. I'm still hoping for Gardner to be signed, I think both he and Feoli-Gudino could be star receivers in the CFL.

Yah I thought that about Gardner last year and I guess he sucked in camp. Anyway I think we'll end up with an all Barnes import receiving core. I bet he'll never be late for a meeting, practice or anything and will work like a madman. Playing football would be a piece of cake after going through Navy and then being in the Navy. Solid signing of a true boatman.

Really? - we'll see if Gardner is re-signed for a TC shot; Feoli-Gudino could be in tough to make the roster - though i think he is a nice package receiver. Argos have a pile of import receivers now for TC.

He might be able to impress in TC competition; the Argos have Mann, Owens and Jason Barnes as 3 import receivers with CFL experience; i have a feeling they may end up as 3 of the 5 starters in the 5 pack; but i hope it is earned thru real, tough TC competition and not just pencilled-in stuff.

Unless they have just awful camps, I think you can mark Mann, Owens and Jason Barnes in the starting 5 in permanent ink along with Durie. Just my take.

I'm not sold on Mann at all and there may even be a chance that Owens goes back to just a return man based on what any of the new import receivers does in TC. I think Jason Barnes is a lock as he and RR already have had success together. Owens dropped quite a few passes last year that were catchable balls so he needs to have an excellent TC as a receiver or he could get beat out IMO. Andre Durie will be a starter out of the slot and hopefully will have a big season.

Maybe - potential big mistake though, IMO - the pencilled-in stuff - maybe they just defer to experience; not sure Mann or Owens are CFL starting 5 calibre receivers; and Durie is a tailback by trade who needs to be utilized properly in a smart offence.

Lots of time to go till TC and competition and working on the offence there - things can shape up well and a bunch of the receivers could have great camps; I just hope this new Argo braintrust did not think just getting Ricky Ray was good enough and they could go el cheapo on receivers and also defer to same old, bland CFL standard 5 pack passing look offence. I hope they have lots of imagination plus a run game up their sleeve.

At the salary Owens is commanding (1.5 x Cory Boyd's) there is no way he is used as just a return guy. Maybe a reduced receiver role, but no chance just a return guy.

Your main return guy - and a dangerous big-play / league best calibre one at that - who can also contribute some in the passing game on offence because he's speedy = a valuable asset who deserves pretty good CFL bucks. A CFL offence playing a return specialist full-time at receiver - who has hands problems and is not really a solid, polished starting receiver = perhaps foolish and a sign of poor TC talent evaluation or a problem in recruiting & evaluating receiver talent.

I think Owens can improve on his receiving but he's always going 100 miles an hour. He has to learn that not all plays call for going crazy like your returning a kickoff. It's better to take a few less yards rather than looking up field before catching the ball or going for that extra yard or two with the loaf of bread.

Does the CFL keep fumble statistics? I can't seem to find any on the CFL website.

While I'm not saying that Owens can or will be a top flight receiver in the league, I think he's a little bit better than some people give him credit for. He needs to cut down on the fumble for sure, but he can still be a valuable contributor I think.

I'm not sold on Owens either as a good receiver, but like AngeloV said, when he's making the money he is, they won't use him as just a kick and punt returner. My position is that Owens is overpaid.

I think you might be underestimating Durie's potential as a slot receiver. I think he will thrive there as right now imo he and Boyd are our best skill players outside of RR. Maybe I'm totally wrong and they don't even use him in the slot, but as long as we get him the ball in open space, good things will happen.

I'm also looking forward to what this new offensive system will bring.

Navy is a "heavy run" program, and in 2008 Barnes accounted for almost half of their completions. There seem to be plenty of games from 2008 where Navy attempted less than 10 passes, and if I'm reading the website accurately (http://cfn.scout.com/2/837838.html) then there was a game where they didn't even throw the ball once. His biography on the navy website describes him as a good blocker with good hands. I can't seem to find a ton of independent confirmation of that fact though.
