You can't ask a question like that. Us older guys (soon to be 44) have a tough time with things like that.

1argoholic and I, are over forty. In fact, we are closer to fifty than we are to forty ... and the beauty of that true expression is, that it can be said, even when we get up into our sixties and beyond.

Mind you, we do not live together; we would drink ourselves (even more) silly.
He lives with his Wife, and I see my Girlfriend mostly on weekends.

Though we share the same Blood Type.

Old enough to know better.......

To quote Bryan Adams "18 'til I die...."

And then my wife and kids remind me that I'm in my 40's and that it's time to grow up.........sigh....

50 in Oct. But people are very surprised so I guess I don't look it. I act 12. Have to admit this is hitting me more than I expected it would. How the hell am I going to turn 50. Like where did that time go? Plus I'm really down about living here and want to move back to Ontario.

Nob where do you live? I can tell you that this Duncan/North Cowichan area has been a very hard nut to crack. People are strange and real flighty. We've decided to move to the Peterborough area in the next few years. I'll have to start my landscape company from scratch again and my wife is in bookkeeping but would like to become an accountant of some sort.
I just don't like so much about BC from the F'ed politics to the strange people. The attitude is so different.

1argoholic - I'm in Maple Ridge. Agreed. This is one weird, somewhat f'd up place. In addition to being 3 hours behind in time zones they are so far behind I everything else. Plus the education system for the kids has been disappointing.

I miss Ontario. Fortunately I landed a terrific job with a fantastic company (which is what broughtme out here). I am greatly indebted to them. It is a strange fate, but the Ontario economy let me down when I needed it. London's unemployment spelled my end in the heartland.

OT :

1argoholic, and others who may or have not been following the life

of John (Ivan) Demjanjuk :

He died yesterday, March 17, 2012, in an elders home in Germany. He was 91.

Some believed he was a part of the Nazi, and/or German extermination machine in World War II (2).

Others thought he was just a Man trying to survive, and not starve to death.

The fact that evidence was hidden by prosecutors in his first, and second trial,

which may have proven him innocent, suggests that he was scape-goated,

to take the fall for Nazis, who have conveniently been avoided trial.

This is not the place to deliberate his guilt or innocence, but as a Ukrainian, and a Canadian

(I am both - equally), I must say that for me, March 17, no matter what year in the future,

will be a day to remember.

Midnight

Midnight Blue

Anyone interested in learning more about John Ivan Demjanjuk, can do an internet search of his name.

Peter Worthington, and Pat Buchanan have a lot to say.

As do many others.

The Man had most of his life taken away from him. He deserves a read.

And yes, many Jews and others were exterminated in WW2.

They deserve a read too.

Personally, I have always believed, that if Demjanjuk was some violent, heartless monster,

then he should HANG.

But if he was simply a prisoner, forced to work where he was sent,

then he was only a prisoner, forced to work where he was sent.

BTW, he was not convicted of any crime. It was only suggested, that he was probably there.

It was never proven. And even if he was there, he was a prisoner, and should not

be held responsible,

for the horror,

of the Nazi Regime.

From the Western Ukraine, specifically the Carpathian Mountains, my ancestors are Hutsuls.

Not exactly Def Leppard and Motley Crue, but the dance in the last link, is said to have

Welcome to the over Forty club !

I have read somewhere in the past, that the words Slav, and Slave, are related. "Slava", means "glory", in Ukrainian. Whatever. The Kozaks fought for their freedom, and for the freedom of the rest of the people in the area, and apparently they somewhat succeeded, since there are at least a few of us around, to keep up their drinking traditions. And yes, sometimes we like a "wee puff", of the good stuff.

I did have family here and that's why we moved. My parents bought a place in 88 in Shawnigan Lake. They rented it out until they could retire but on Oct 20th 91 on the Skywalk on the way to a Calgary/Argo game my dad died of a heart attack. My mom decided two years after that to move here anyway. Being an only child on visits I could see my mom wasn't getting any younger and we decided to move. Every area has issues but they've added up in a big way over the years for us to really hate it here. It really is like moving to the 1960's. It's also very funny that the folks here are both friendly yet they don't let you in to their lives. Not nearly as welcoming as in Southern Ontario. It's like you poise some sort of threat. Strange vibe..really strange vibe. Backyard burning, litter, tree topping, abuse of women, animals, booze, drugs and hippy bullcrap to name a few. BC politics especially in a very NDP area of this valley sucks. I could go on and on. We've met some great folks but one couple moved back to Ottawa, another two couples to Alberta and one couple to Montreal. I will miss Victoria as it's a great city.

Hey - it's not you and it's not them -- you're just very different from them, and you will never get close to them. BC is full of pockets of folks who are 'different'. Rednecks, hillbillies, survivalists, religious zealots - the list is endless. I think they move there together so that they can stay different, which is exactly what they want to be -- and they don't want to change anything. . You see this phenomenon even more so in the western USA.
Decades ago, we moved from Calgary to BC, and bought a beautiful oceanside property on a gulf island - two years later, we moved into Vancouver, where time had not stood still. Visited the island about 2 years ago and nothing had changed -- flower power, headbands, bell bottoms and lively discussions about Karl Marx over a few joints.
You are to be congratulated for holding out so long.
By the way, the most redneck place I have ever lived was a small town north of Lindsay, ON - very like North Cowichan but ultra right wing, but that's another story !

It's different. Right now we have a huge debate over backyard burning. They just don't get it. They'll burn anything because when given an inch they take ten miles. I still can't believe we have a backyard burning season with regs but no one follows or enforces. I hope we can sell next summer and get the heck away from here.
