Didn't Pfeffer sign a ridiculous long term contract?

Pfeffer was also on Lawless' list previously, but has since been taken off, so it would seem he's not an FA this off-season, which sucks.

In other news, Redtag.ca has become an official partner (sponsor) of the CFL.

I have no problem with that. Mike Lysko was the exact opposite of quiet as commish, and I don't think too many want him back. Orridge's job is develop partnerships that will make the league stronger financially. I don't need to hear from him in the media.

I was hoping though he would present his vision maybe like the top 5 things to accomplish.
Also disappointed how expansion was nowhere on his immediate plan to pursue in Atlantic Canada.
Give Cohon credit he did visit out east many times and was responsible for the Atlantic games over the years.
For most of us here expansion is likely at the top of especially since now the Argo situation looks much better.

The guy has only been on the job a few months and is still learning all of the ins and outs. He will have a State of the League address next week so I am sure that he will answer some of your concerns then. As for expansion to Atlantic Canada, that is probably at least another 10 years away if it ever happens. At this point, I think that he has to be more concerned about arresting declining TV ratings and attendance than about expansion anyway.

No doubt we'd all love to see a tenth team. But until a credible owner surfaces with a viable plan to build a new stadium, I don't see expansion as anything more than a secondary objective for the league.

I could be wrong, but I get the impression the league was less than impressed with the Atlantic games.

Orridge's presentation may have been a bit awkward, but embarrassing is not the word I'd use.
While I'm still disappointed that the new CFL website hasn't been unveiled (in fairness, Orridge never made the comment, some media members did) and that there still isn't a drug testing policy in place, of which could be announced during Orridge's state of the League address, he has done some good things as of late. Getting the playoffs and Grey Cup on youtube, making the game available to most of the world is a good initiative. Also bringing in Kal Tire, BF Goodrich and Redtag.ca as league sponsors also are steps in the right direction. Not to mention some of the new playoff sponsors such as Odds Shark, Canadian Beef, Casa Di Mama, etc. I for one am really looking forward to the State of the League press conference, would love to hear what his and the League's plans are moving forward.

Orridge is a businessman is he not? When was the last time a President/CEO of a company be solely judged on their public speaking or how "boring" they seem? It's what goes on behind the scenes that really matter. If Orridge is getting things done like what SnowRogue posted, then I'm thinking he's doing his job (for now at least). It will take a few years to see what kind of overall impact he's had as commissioner.

tweets via CFL_News, tweeting snippets from the column.

#Riders Pres./CEO Craig Reynolds will create buzz wherever he goes this wk. Ppl will want 2 C w/ whom he is hanging around.

O'Day would probably like this week to fly by without Reynolds talking to anyone, but that won't happen.

(John) Murphy is one of #CFL's top personnel men, as evidenced by #Calstampeders' success over the years.

O'Day, Murphy & Sunderland could have stiff competition as rumours swirling that some big names have entered the fray.

#Riders are the richest franchise in the league by a long shot, and there is no pension plan in the #CFL.

A renowned GM at the end of his career could pocket a few million dollars with one final deal.

That's why names like Wally Buono, Jim Barker and John Hufnagel shouldn't be ruled out until the new boss is named.

Jeff Tedford isn't a slam dunk to return next season & #BCLions getting worse ever since @GM_Brillo quit coaching.

If Tedford returns to the NFL or NCAA, that's two head coaching positions that are open.

Offensive co-ordinator George Cortez's future is also said to be up in the air.

#Esks Chris Jones is a natural born head coach, but he also has the ability to find players (for #Riders GM/HC role).

.@PaulLaPolice believed to be O'Day's favourite HC choice but #Bombers also interested in him as their new OC.

#CFL Insiders say: If Tedford goes it's likely one of Cortez, (Mark) Washington or Buono returning to the sidelines.

#CFL Insiders say: People around the league are surprised at Montreal's decision to retain their full staff.

Barker told Steve Simmons last week that he is definitely not leaving Toronto. Regarding the B.C. situation, I don't know how the Lions can sell Buono as head coach again as many Lions fans are sick of him and believe that it is time that he retires. Mark Washington and George Cortez aren't all that inspiring as possible head coaches either. Lions need to do something to stop the bleeding of fan support out in B.C.

Here is some additional chatter from that column:

"The best referee this season has been Tom Vallesi. Hopefully he gets Sunday's game"

One of Penton's "insiders" said this. Vallesi has, arguably, been the worst ref in the league this season and did not work any of the post-season games so I am pretty sure he is out of the equation for the Grey Cup. I would go with either Kim Murphy or Andre Proulx.

Yesterday was the first anybody has ever heard about it I think. At first I thought it might be due to some of the injuries he's suffered, but apparently not, I heard he might want to pursue some non-football opportunities.

A key advantage Langsdorf would have is that he coached GM Ed Hervey in Edmonton. Will that be enough to get the head coaching job?

If Austin doesn't give Steinauer some sort of promotion that is a BS move on his part. You are not supposed to stand in the way of assistants interviewing for HC jobs. I don't see him giving up the HC job either to be just GM, so unless he decides to pack up and leave, I think Steinauer is stuck.

I could see Austin jumping ship, I think it could be really interesting for the 2016 off-season. Huff is rumoured to still have the coaching bug and his deal ends in 2016. Austin's deal also ends in 2016 and he's not known for sticking around. So I could actually see Steinauer become the Head Coach in Hamilton. Although, I'm not sure who they'd go with as GM, Tillman maybe ?

I'm pretty sure Steinauer signed a bigger-than-usual coordinator contract and the quid pro quo was agreeing not to allow his name to be considered for any HC jobs during the contract. I don't like Austin but he negotiated a deal that works for both parties, and Steinauer signed it willingly.

http://ottawacitizen.com/sports/football/cfl/redblacks-talking-contract-with-gm-marcel-desjardins-head-coach-rick-campbell
Contact extension talks ongoing in Ottawa for their GM and Coach.

And...............

Hunt also said the Redblacks’ late-season run to first place in the division, the stirring 35-28 victory against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the East final at TD Place stadium and even the 26-20 Grey Cup game defeat against the Eskimos had boosted renewals and new sales of season tickets for 2016 ahead of last year’s pace.

The Redblacks sold 15,000-15,500 season tickets (or equivalents) for 2015, which was down from about 17,000 for the team’s first season on the field.

Hunt said the boost in sales was “encouraging that people are responding well to the year we had and are feeling good about renewing their season tickets and being part of R Nation.”

The Redblacks sold out 24,000-seat TD Place stadium for seven of 11 games played there this past season, including the playoff contest against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Very good news IMO.

Well, the article says that Steinauer's contract has a "no move" clause in it.
I'm not a fan of Austin, but I think he is justified to be angry about this.
Did Steinauer not understand what he was signing?

So basically, I was bang on when I called him an A**hole for not allowing Steinauer to interview for a promotion. Once a jerkface, always a jerkface.

More importantly, if the Esks don't hire Steinauer, this can create a serious rift in the ranks of the Cats coaching staff. Anyway you look at it, ADVANTAGE ARGOS!!!!

I disagree. You can word it any way you want, but it's also an unwritten rule that a team can't stand in the way of a coach being offered an upgrade to his current role. Head coaching gigs may never be offered a 2nd time. You should grant him permission regardless. It's the right thing to do. Otherwise he just takes the Chris Jones approach.

It's an unwritten rule unless the two parties to a contract actually agree to a written rule, which I believe is what happened in this case. If Austin gave something good to OS (like more money or extra job security) in exchange for OS agreeing not to pursue any other opportunities, Austin is an idiot if he now allows OS to leave. Unless he gets something of equal value back.

Sorry, I still disagree. It should always be permitted to allow an assistant to interview for a HC job. That contract was signed prior to the 2015 season and likely 2016 was not even taken into consideration. I don't think that type of clause should be allowed to prevent coaches from improving their careers, and obviously either the league, or the team president agree, because the permission has been granted.

Are you suggesting that a coach should be prevented from signing a contract that guarantees him a particular salary, a full payout in the event of termination or some other valuable consideration provided he's willing to waive certain "rights"? Why should free trade be restrained that way? These are adults signing contracts that are binding on both parties. If the contract does not require either party to do something illegal, what business would the league have saying a "must-stay" clause is verboten? I can see the league saying No to contracts that allow a team to fire a coach without any severance at all, but why would or should the league prevent a team from being more generous than it otherwise would have? And where should the line be drawn?

If a team says "we'll pay you twice the going rate if you agree to fulfil the entire length of your contract," how is that harming the person -- again, an adult, and likely one who gets independent advice -- who agrees and signs?

Steinauer would have known he might be a candidate for future openings elsewhere, and he presumably signed the deal with full knowledge of the potential consequences. IMO he could and arguably should have been forced to live up to the contract he signed. If he went to Austin a year later and said, "thanks for the sweet deal but I changed my mind," it is he, not Austin, who should be condemned IMO.

I read somewhere that while Steinauer has a no move clause, Austin still had a choice of letting Steinauer interview or not (url and quote below). This is clearly Austin just being Austin and it sounds as though Orlondo might have had to fight to get the opportunity to interview. (take with a grain of salt)
http://www.torontosun.com/2015/12/10/cfl-snapshots-orlondo-steinauer-getting-interview-with-eskimos

http://www.thespec.com/sports-story/5823940-cfl-coaching-openings-put-focus-back-on-ticats-orlondo-steinauer/

Late last year, Steinauer was quietly signed to a contract extension that included the 2015 and 2016 seasons. As part of that agreement — which provides an unusual measure of job security for a co-ordinator — a no-movement clause was included.

But general manager and head coach Kent Austin retains the right to grant permission for Steinauer to interview with other clubs.

Again, I disagree. Any time a head coaching job becomes available, any non head coach should be allowed to go for it, regardless of contract status. Obviously the league and the Ti-Cats president agree, or the status wouldn't have changed.

That is accurate. IMO it is absurd and wrong for parties to agree to a special consideration, and for one party to pay a premium in exchange for it, and then have the beneficiary of that premium insist that the special consideration should be invalid. Not saying OS did that in this case because we don't know the full story, but IMO if he did it he is clearly in the wrong.

Would have been a nice signing for the Argos. OTOH - it's IMO nice to see some players sticking with the team that drafted them or recruited them - some loyalty for being given a chance. Turner has gradually evolved to a very good starting CFL D player; and DT was the only position where Huff employed a NI as a regular on his D last year (Turner + other draft picks Quinn Smith & Derek Wiggan getting to play there)

If Bowman's contract numbers are true or even close to that, IMO he's ridiculously overpaid. Yes, I am aware that he's one of the top receivers in terms of yards, but he's targeted significantly more than any of player and he drops a lot of passes. IMO one of the most overrated players in the CFL.

I don't know -- that reads to me like $225K guaranteed in US $, with another $75k attainable. That's about $300K Cdn guaranteed plus $100k potential. No receiver up here will get that kind of money with a $5M cap.

So you meant he could have got same sort of dollar figs in Cdn $, i.e. @225k Cdn guaranteed? I agree he probably could have got that, but that's not how I read it.

He would have only gotten around $200K guaranteed in the CFL, that being his complete salary. He's getting $225K guaranteed for basically nothing in the NFL, then another $5K for training camp and another $450K in salary for the season. So total package of around $680K. <iframe id="rufous-sandbox" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true" allowfullscreen="true" style="position: absolute; visibility: hidden; display: none; width: 0px; height: 0px; padding: 0px; border: none;"></iframe>

Rogers deal is 2 years $1.19 million, so $680k in season 1 doesn't make sense.

Signing bonus is paid up front. The only thing Rogers would get paid in Year 2 would be $500K. 1.2 million minus 680K comes out to roughly 500K, so it makes perfect sense.

Huff would be able to give a shot to the likes of promising young receivers who have flashed serious talent in Charbonneau-Campeau or Lemar Durant a chance to step-up and play a way more prominent role in their pass attack there with the departure of Rogers to the NFL; but I doubt that will happen and a guy like Moore would be given that shot due to his birth certificate mostly; and those other 2 guys would still have a role at the little used "NI receiver" position.

When Cobourne was with Hamilton he and several Ticats ran a youth football camp in Burlington that both of my boys attended.
Not to compare this with pro football by any stretch but his enthusiasm, communication skills and love of the game became immediately apparent to all who attended that camp including all of the parents.
Good move by Winnipeg!

Riders have signed two new players for training camp.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced the signings of two international players — quarterback B.J. Coleman and offensive lineman Quinterrius Eatmon — on Monday. Terms were not released by the CFL team.
The 6-foot-3, 231-pound Coleman spent two seasons with the Green Bay Packers after being selected in the seventh round (243rd overall) of the 2012 NFL draft. He played in four pre-season games over two years before being released by Green Bay in September of 2013.
The 27-year-old Coleman, who played NCAA football at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, spent part of the 2015 Arena Football League season with the Arizona Rattlers.
The 6-foot-6, 310-pound Eatmon attended training camp with the Oakland Raiders in 2015, when he played in two pre-season games. After playing college football at South Florida, Eatmon signed with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in May of last year.

The Bombers have resigned National DE Louie Richardson.

Former Manitoba Bisons defensive end Louie Richardson has put pen to paper on a new deal with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The pending free agent is coming off his fourth CFL season, half of which he played with the Bombers. Richardson had three tackles in five games last year. He’s racked up nine defensive tackles, 23 special teams tackles, two sacks and two fumble recoveries in 31 career games.
Richardson is the third pending free agent Winnipeg has signed this off-season. Nine other Bombers, including kicker Lirim Hajrullahu, fullback Michel-Pierre Pontbriand and receiver Nick Moore, could hit the market when free agency opens on February 9.

Exactly Paul, teams need to know where they stand in regards to their own FA's, and formulate a plan, as previously speculated I'm sure teams have been in contact (one way or another) with various players ahead of next week.

Their version of Mike Bradwell perhaps?

DesLauriers came into the CFL at the same time as Fantuz as 2 of the best CFL draft receiver prospects in a long -time and both big size targets. Fantuz based on great CIS production (4 straight years a CIS all-star = rarely done + setting receiving records); and Deslauriers put up some great receiving numbers in Div I ball. Fantuz clearly panned out wayyyyy better in the CFL, but I often wondered why Deslauriers kept re-signing with the Als where he never rose above a little used receiver ? - decent CFL career but way under-achieved for such a seeming great receiver prospect.

Bradwell had basically one big CIS season on his resume coming into the draft = not near as highly rated a receiver prospect; not as big as those other 2, but certainly faster than Fantuz (for what that is worth - Fantuz maybe one of the slowest CFL receivers in some time, also happened to lead the entire league in receiving in a season).

The Montreal Alouettes re-signed Canadian defensive end/fullback James Tuck to a one-year deal Friday.
The six-foot, 230-pound Tuck was a 2014 fourth-round pick by Montreal. The 25-year-old Toronto native also saw action as a fullback last season.

"James is one of the hardest working players on the team," Montreal head coach/GM Jim Popp said in a statement. "He has been making a nice transition to fullback and creates matchup problems on special teams."

Tuck played collegiately at York University.

We need to target our spending at areas of need, like o-line and secondary and second QB. Receiver is the least of our concerns. Smith is a nifty little receiver but we have considerable ability and depth at that position even if we lose Owens (which I doubt will happen). Can't see us getting into the market for Smith at all.

Chambers to the Ticats makes sense IMO; they don't have any NI receivers they like aside from Fantuz (who they may not re-sign even).

However, there are lots of these "makes sense" destinations for many on this long list of FAs this year but I wouldn't count on a lot of them happening; we shall see starting next Tuesday - might be some whacky or weird signings; could possibly rival the CFL draft for head-scratcher type moves, but probably not, as certain teams will surely target some known commodities to address team needs ?

With so many free agents, teams have to be careful they spend on any one of them.

The Ottawa Redblacks weren’t huddled in negotiations with defensive end Justin Capicciotti and his agent.
The B.C. Lions said this week they wouldn’t be making another contract offer to running back Andrew Harris.
Word from Hamilton was that the Tiger-Cats maintained they won’t be held up for ransom by defensive tackle Ted Laurent.
Money was the sticking point in all three cases, and the fact those three “ratio-breakers” remained unsigned illustrated the discrepancy between the premium placed on national talent by Canadian Football League teams when constructing their rosters and the relatively tough talk preceding the start of free agency on Tuesday.
With one eye on the salary cap of $5.1 million and another on the unprecedented crop of free agents — 52 nationals among an overall total of 131 as of mid-day Friday — teams seem to be thinking of trying to find other ways of retaining the required ratio of nationals to internationals on the roster and in the starting lineups on offence and defence while replacing higher-priced Canadian starters with (cheaper) Americans.
Doesn’t that sound a little bit like the Temporary Foreign Workers program that created such a public controversy before the last federal election campaign?
OK, that’s an overstatement, but hopefully it makes the point.
Many players entering the CFL will find their starting salaries trending toward the $52,000 annual minimum, and contracts are guaranteed for the current season only after a designated number of weeks on the schedule: nine games for six-year veterans, 10 games for five-year CFLers, etc.
As well, given the extreme physical demands of the sport, there’s time or opportunity for players to make significant financial gains.
A league notes package from the start of the 2015 regular season said the average player had 2.62 years of previous experience; 46% of all players were in their first or second year in the league. That meant they were still working under terms of their first CFL contracts and hadn’t yet benefited from the opportunity to sign second, third or fourth contracts that, with their abilities having been proven, would provide for presumably larger salary increases.

I find the news on Elimimian a bit weird? Isn't he making something like $235K per year and the highest paid defensive player in the league? Why make that contract shorter? I would assume it would be harder to make more than $235K per year for Elimimian in 2017?

He will be 30 in October, just after the start of the NFL season and failed to make the Vikings or Browns in 2012, so I think he'll have a hard time making it now. The Lions may be hoping to keep him happy for the shorter contract. He may also have agreed to come back to them if he doesn't make it.

You don’t need to give Mercer Timmis a lesson on the machinations of the Canadian Football League ratio.

He already knows.
If you have one Canadian running back, you need two. Ideally, maybe even three.
That has the University of Calgary Dinos tailback eyeing up CFL free agency this week with keen interest, as his landing spot in the 2016 CFL Draft three months from now could be tied to where veteran ball-carriers Andrew Harris and Jerome Messam land.

B.C. Lions GM/head coach Wally Buono has already thrown in the towel on trying to re-sign Harris, and the 28-year-old Winnipeg native will definitely hit the market Tuesday at 10 a.m.
Messam could follow if the monetary gap that exists between the 30-year-old running back and the Calgary Stampeders can’t be bridged by the time the frenzy starts in 24 hours or so.
Once those two players sign, Timmis will have a pretty good idea of which teams will have him on their draft radar.
“Definitely,” Timmis said when asked if he’s been tuned in to the CFL hot-stove talk this off-season. “A big thing for me right now is just watching the free agency and seeing what happens with Messam, what happens with Harris because just for the teams that want to draft me, from what I’ve heard, they need a Canadian running back if they have one of those guys. I’m just excited to see what’s going to happen here.”

Why did they bother signing Mumaba last year? However - Bear Woods was hurt most of last season, no? - and he had a good year at MLB for the Als the season before; wouldn't surprise me in the least if Poop would rather have Woods at MLB, especially if it is not a "ratio problem" forcing them to use Muamba; but I thought they might think of playing some 3-4 with both guys in the middle.

Argos should be all over trying to get Muamba if he is up for grabs, and with the loss of starter Jones; Muamba is an excellent play-making MLB IMO.

Of course they could. Isn't Owens big $$$s off the $M$ now anyways ?

If that mediocre MacPherson is making anywhere over 100K (as most back-up QBs with some experience easily do i think) - I would cut him in a second to add a player of Muamba's skill; then you could sign a young QB for CFL mimimum wage - several young Canadian QBs would jump at that chance i bet - Yantz, Cousineau, Wendell from the GGs ... maybe AV comes out of retirement and would play for that coin ? ;o)

Lots of other options on who to cut to free up some dollars for Muamba - Van Zeyl, Hazelton, ...there should be a way and I can't believe some would make up an excuse to not take a shot at that kind of talent in a big area of need now.

Als general manager Jim Popp has been making calls to teams around the league letting them know Muamba could be had. The Eskimos and Riders have reportedly been receptive with regards to possible trade talks. Montreal needs to trim some salary for cap reasons.

Muamba is due a bonus north of $55,000 in less than a week, which could force a transaction by that deadline. He has one-year left on his contract for the 2016 season that would pay him in the range of $235,000

I'm confused because initially (via the media) Popp was looking to move Henoc due to money (he's due a big bonus soon) and the addition of Vaughan Martin, I just don't see too many teams interested in Henoc at his current rate. Either Popp is doing some damage control and trying to increase Henoc's trade value or maybe he's telling the truth and other teams have actually called.

Meanwhile, numerous sources have told the Montreal Gazette the Als are attempting to trade non-import middle-linebacker Henoc Muamba. Edmonton appears the most interested and could relinquish a high draft choice. Muamba’s scheduled to earn $225,000 next season and is owed a significant bonus next week.

Popp is simply setting a price and creating a market for a player who would be in high demand.

Poop looks like an @$$-hat again IMO.

Load of B$ last year about how Muamba was such a great signing and fit for the Als; spends wads of cash on an over-rated clown like Duron Carter; and now stating Muamba is up for grabs (if he was not "inititating" talks, how would any other team know to inquire about a supposedly great Als signing from just late last year?) Poop wants to cheap out on paying Muamba a decent bonus due, and would rather play his boy Bear Woods at MLB; other CFL teams should just ignore Poop on this, and then he would have to cut Muamba who he treated just as an "asset" I guess - then it would I believe come down to waiver wire priority as to who could claim/ sign him first ? - Jones and the Rider just blew a pile of cash on FAs including a good MLB pick-up in Greg Jones; Bummers next in line, but they spent lots of FA cash too, and would Muamba go back to the Peg? Then its BC - who have Sol-E & Bighill, ... then the Argos would be next in line ... I think ???

Disagree. Players get cut before a bonus which is somewhat of an advance on salary. Since it's done prior to actually working, at least they are not losing money for services rendered. Price OTOH, took money and ran.

I get that both are good faith things, but as I said, in the Muamba case, he had the bonus taken away before actually doing any team related things.

Price's bonus was a signing bonus for signing the contract - which he did. Personally I see no issue here; if CFL teams are allowed to release players from their contract with no penalty - players should have the same right IMO.

Not saying it wasn't a douche move, but it was a signing bonus, maybe things changed and he decided it was time to retire; I don't know. For years GM's have gotten away with releasing players before they have to pay a bonus - I'm kind of glad it was the reverse this time.

No, not really; though I do believe he is quite over-rated and a legend in his own mind type; he did win the GC as a HC last year; Milanovich, Danny Garden Gnome Maciocia, Cory Chamblin and Tom Ned Flanders Higgins have also won a GC as HC in the recent/ "modern" CFL.

I find the Price situation more amusing or ironic given the state of mind of some Rider fans - defending anything/everything the new Jones regime does there as the work of football genius.
