It's just the way it is the people you speak of are hopeless they will never give the cfl a chance, and it's not just confined to the GTA/Ontario.I grew up in Ontario but now live in the maratimes and get the same treatment when i wear my Ticats gear out. Some people for some reason have a high level of hatred for our league. It makes me very mad when people bash the cfl in front of me, it's not a joke it's a league with over 100 years of tradition, it is a league for the most part with great football it is my favourite type of football and i will never have a higher level of passion for any other sport. The cfl bashers will continue to do so i say it's their loss

You can use two words to shut them up F@#K YOU!!!! Most of those morons aren't even football fans. I cut two friends loose because they used to call me and leave messages bashing and joking when the Argos would lose. That was about 20 years back and I don't miss the F@#Kers.

People hating the CFL was (and probably still is) a problem in Thornhill. There were few people at my high school interested in the CFL, they were simply the "pro-NFL, anti-CFL" types. The reason probably was simply "it's not the NFL." There seemed to be a little bit of increased interest in the Argos in 2004 when they went on their playoff run and won the Grey Cup, but since I graduated high school in the spring of 2005, I don't know if that interest was sustained. But, even going to University it wasn't much different. You saw Roughrider jerseys and sometimes Blue Bomber jerseys on the University of Ottawa campus, but I'm pretty sure I was the only one with an Argo jerseys. My roommate's throughout university weren't football fans except for 4th year, but he was an International Student from Washington and was a huge Redskins fan. In 2010 a bunch of us went to Filthy McNasty's to watch the disastarous Eastern Final against Montreal. There were about 9 or 10 of us watching the CFL game, but the amount of people enamoured by the NFL and not paying the CFL any attention was astounding, but not surprising I guess.

It isn't isolated to the GTA though, in Las Vegas last February we even met a douchenbag from Saskatchewan who slammed down the CFL. He had obviously had a few of the $1 margaritas from Bill's Gambling Hall, he was trying to pick a fight over his hatred of the CFL.

I always wear my Argos clothing whenever I go out and I still remember being insulted by complete strangers as far back as 25 years ago. It seemed to have started when the CFL ran into financial problems in the mid 1980's. It became worse when SkyDome opened and people in the GTA incorrectly believed that this new stadium was built for an NFL team. I had just started a new job in May of 1989 which was just a few weeks before SkyDome opened and I made sure that all my new co-workers knew that I was an Argo season ticket holder and that I had an extra ticket to sell to each game. I still remember one of my new co-workers at the time getting mad at me for buying Argo season tickets since by doing that, I was helping the Argos stay alive and keeping the NFL out of Toronto. I told him that was exactly why I was doing it. People seem to think that the sooner the Argos fold, the sooner an NFL team will come to Toronto. Everytime that there is an NFL game played at SkyDome, it reinforces this belief.

I had no idea this was an issue for so many people. I regulary deck out in Argo merch (cap and shirt) and no one's ever said two words to me about it. Maybe that's the way it is when you're really really ridiculously good-looking <blue steel>.

I am not shy about wearing the odd cfl item and i have never had anyone with enough nutsack to say a neg word about the CFL to me. In fact its been the opposite. A few times in NYC ive had americans come up to me and ask me if i'm Canadian and theyve said they liked the CFL and occasionally have caught a few games on MSG. And when back home in TO its been sort of a beacon to other CFL fans that have brought up the game to me knowing i would be receptive.

Interestingly i went to the ski show a few yrs ago wearing an Argo cap and walked right by BMO as Tfc fans were congregated before a game. i felt the eyes focusing on my cap especially seeing this was around the time the Stadium issue was in the forefront, but again nobody said anything. Its pretty sad you are taking crap for supporting the greatest league in the world. Hopefully i run into you in the street someday , i`ll certainly throw some props your way.

There is a time-honoured tradition in this country of bashing anything "Canadian". Some things like Justin Bieber deserve to be bashed but much of what is Canadian doesn't deserve this bashing. The CFL is a bit like Canadian films. If you ask the average Canadian to provide their opinion about Canadian films, they will say that they "suck" because they have seen very few of these films. We actually make a lot of great films in this country (Quebec filmmakers are as good as any in the world IMO) but nobody can see them or people choose not to see them because they are not "American". Of course, Americans make loads of crappy movies every year but that doesn't seem to matter. People who bash the CFL rarely watch the league because they make the same assumptions that they do about other Canadian cultural products.

Yeah - interesting - I wear CFL gear (got hats and other stuff from ALL CFL teams) often, and I`m in the camp who has hardly ever had anything negative said to me (a couple of buddies who are more NFL betting wannabes will razz me about the CFL); and often I`ll get a positive comment or a question about the CFL if somebody sees me with CFL gear. I got a few people respond to my Argo cap in Florida a couple of years back - `"Arrrrrgoooos`" is nice to hear.

And I know the CFL bashers - cause it ain`t `major league" or "world class" - a lot of that stuff was propogated by all the lemming like wannabes in the media up here - are widespread in Canada, certainly run into some here and hear about them all over Canada - so it`s certainly not just a Toronna or Southern Ontario thing. Good thing I haven`t had the real mouthy types spewing CFL hate in my face - my reaction would more likely be to ask them if they`d like their teeth kicked in, rather than to try to use a polite, reasoned defence of the CFL.

The only "negative" comment I've ever had was from my girlfriend, who asked me "why am you wearing that stupid jersey again, we're going out to dinner to a nice restaurant, jerseys and hats are for bars" lol. I should point out that she is an Argo/CFL fan, just that we were going to eat at her favorite restaurant that day, so I let the "bashing" slide.

I wear my Argos gear all the time. Nobody ever says anything to me (of course being 6'3" 275 lbs might be a reason). But frankly I wouldn't worry if anybody ever did. At least I know that I have the ability to think for myself and not have a need to go with the "cool" or "trendy" crowds.

I have to disagree in regard to the Biebs. I wouldn't care to hear his music but this kid made himself. There's nothing wrong with a young Canadian making it huge singing main stream crap that all the young girls love. At least he was made like all of those wee boy bands. I say good on the young guy. He's a good down to earth kid.
Canadian make great films as does much of Europe. I'd have to say it's Hollywood that pumps out the crap. I haven't been to a movie in 12 years and only two in about 20. However I do enjoy some of the cool Canadian or European stuff you come across while flipping channels.
Most people only follow mainstream crap and don't realize how much of a very cool underground there is out there. All of my music I listen to with the exception of a few bands would be bands that most would never have heard of. Killer bands like The Supersuckers, The Real McKenzies, Throwrag, Gunsmoke, The Deadcats etc. Just because it isn't mainstream like the NFL doesn't mean it's crap.

Anyhow, i was born and raised in TO and there is no shortage of douchebags in this town present company excepted of course. Music is a matter of personal taste, and a lot of people like Justin Bieber's music. He doesn't deserve to be bashed any more than do Stompin' Tom, Rush, Arcade Fire, Anne Murray, Kardinal Offishall, etc.

The NFL players make more money thing is a laugher , and its reasoning i have heard NFL fans use. My response to that is That you gotta love NFL fans, Bragging about multimillionaire salaries while bringing 12 bucks an hour home for themself. I think it's also appropriate to be realistic; NFL players *are* substantially better, on average.

I don't follow the CFL because I think its players are the most talented in the world. CFL teams represent cities that I have an affinity for, and they play a version of football that has a unique appeal. It is less predictable and more likely to produce strange plays.

We don't have anything to apologize for, but pretending that there isn't a talent differential seems unwise.

Wobbler some great points. I can relate to our league and the money they make as well. I can't relate to a football player making sick NFL money.

It doesn't take much other that hitting Grey Cup to see that the CFL without a doubt has the greatest fans in the world. Everyone comes from all over Canada and generally gets hammered for two to four days with very few problems. I have yet to witness any drunken brawls, stabbings or general BS. I've been to what 24 or 25 cups.

It's funny how some of the same people who criticize CFL players for making too little will also cut up pro athletes (Grabovski, Liles, and Komisarek of the Leafs for example) for making too much money.

And then there's the irony of some calling the CFL bush and wanting an NFL team, yet outside of a dozen or so regional markets, the NHL is either ignored or hated (thought of as bush in other words) in the rest of the U.S., and outside North America hardly anyone cares about American gridiron football.

Last or second last in total points in the league.

None really, and there lies the problem, in a crowed sports market, the Argo's just became another one of those losing teams.

The only reason I think the leafs "sellout" everygame is somehow MLSE managed to keep the myth that tickets are hard to get, that may be largely because owning Maple Leafs tickets isn't about hockey, it's seen as a status symbol.

The team had won 2 Grey Cups in a row in the late 90's and had the greatest player (Doug Flutie) to ever step on a CFL field playing and couldn't even bring in more than 18,000 people to the stands.

A lot of papering............. first year C+S bought the team the Argos only had around 2500 season ticket holders, it peaked in 2008 at 12,000 ST holders.
In terms of comparison, the Ticats have been averaging around 12,000 for quite some time now (Ivor Wynne is in a horrible location and is getting old....... yet people still show up) and from what I've read every other CFL has at least 17,000 ST holders (Riders the most with around 26,000).
The Argos will sell well this season because of the Grey Cup and 2013 they should do okay, but 2014 and onward the wheels will fall off again. Like I said the day will come where the CFL runs out of Patzys and humanitarians to own the Argos.

Since I have been following the Argos from 1990, they have been on their death bed numerous times including just before the Hollywood group bought and gave us the Grey Cup in 1991. The last 22 years have proven otherwise to your prediction of the Argos demise. So, I have reason to predict and believe this team will continue for another 22 years. History is on my side.

I am ashamed of this to the point where I am considering not visiting this site anymore because of these innane threads on "manning" and asking if the leage is a joke. Especially bad we're having these so called "discussions" in a year we're hosting the 100th Grey Cup.

I may just start enjoying my football team and games in a very personal way without caring what non-fans and fans think. While I agree that an outdoor intimate stadium would help the Argos, the comparison to Montreal is unrealistic for the following reasons.
1.The big Owe was a good 10.5 kms outside of the Montreal DT core, Molson Stadium is in the DT core and only 2.4 kms from the Bell centre. The Skydome is as DT as you can get in T.O
2. Population, Montreal metro pop is 3.8 million and they have 3 pro teams, Toronto metro pop is 5.6 Million and there are 6 pro teams
3. Impact of the NFL, while a lot of Canada watches the NFl you never hear Montreal calling for an NFL team, that's all Toronto seems to want.
4.CFL Competition, Toronto has the TiCats just down the Highway, Mtl has no rivalry and there is a football boom in Quebec, something Toronto hasn't seen since the 1970's.
5. Media coverage, we here continually complain of the lack of CFl/Argos talk, check out the MTL Radio and tv stations, they get even less coverage then we do.
6. Competitiveness, since the Stallions moved to Mtl the Alouettes have been the most consistent competitive team in the CFl for 15 years, Toronto at best has been up and down a lot more down than up.

Again as I've brought up countless times, that is only because Patzys and humanitarians have been found, eventually no one will be willing to bleed money on the Argos. The fact that David Braley owner of the BC Lions also bought the Argos is a testament to that and no serious group came forward to buy the team.

yeah this thread is goofy and now we've got some talking about moving the team.

If I am the last guy in the stands so be it, I'll shut off the lights and tell my grandchildren (if I have any) about a time when this city used to be great and its people used to care about things Canadian.

Bang on! I thought this "negativity" was only supposed to last on the old forum. Geez how did this become the Argo haters forum? I don't mind criticism to some point but all I all I hear is our fans suck blah blah blah. I would rather have a a strong group of true fans than some wannabes. I've been to a Riders game (Taylor field) and yes they sell out but some people still have clue who is who on their team. Its just cool to go to a Riders game in Regina.

Although the title of this thread may suggest otherwise the discussion isn't calling the CFL a joke, but rather having a discussion of the type of attitudes that people have encountered from others on the street.

^ I know and have no problem with it because at school all my friends make fun of me for being a CFL fan but for some strange reason this thread has got married and divorced like 6 times adding and losing bits of pieces here and there.

AG, stick with it buddy I was exactly like you a CFL outcast and I loved it.
Instead of drinking the NFL kool aid, for years I would take the CFL is the best position and the other side could not or would not understand the concept.

The Toronto Argonauts are going nowhere. They are a Canadian institution and all of the mainstream sheep wannabee NFL knobs with nothing better to do can go F themselves and there putting down of the CFL. I heard sh!t like this 30 years ago.
These knobs aren't football fans. I don't need to come on here to get all pissed off. My life in Duncan does that enough for me. I just got a nice reply from our town council ripping me for swearing my head off in an e-mail about my buttplug neighbour having a good ole back yard garbage burn on Sat night. Somehow we moved to the 1960's.

First off...i absolutely HATE (i said it T-Bone) HATE the name of this thread. The CFL is not a joke, and never has been.

Second, while snow rogue ruffled a few feathers with his comments, he was also right on 2 points. 1- reagrding the downtown comparison to MTL, 2-Braley was the only person out there willing to buy the Argo's. If you all remember the LEAGUE owned the team prior to C & S.
Im sure that there is a big money owner somewhere who may purchase the Argo's, but not right now.

As for all the negativity??..sometimes it gets out of hand, but that is usually in regards to other sports posting, or maybe disagreements on the calibre of a player or coach. Lots members hammer Area51, yet i see him as very informed, and accurate with most of his commentaries. This is freedom of speech at its finest.

The Argo's are awesome, and us fans of the Argo's are the most passionate in the world, problem is there simply is not enough of us.

If there is a strong core of 24K fans, maybe its time for us all to "put up or shut up", why not look into a community owned team (like the Eskimo's). (at a thousand a piece thats 24 million to start)...

That's unfortunate because like the Argos ad campaign says we need "All hands on deck!" I hope you will reconsider.

There is a difference between negativity and hostility. I agree with you that Area51 is very informed and accurate with many of his commentaries but the way he delivers them is what turns people off I suspect. He always feels the need to throw in insults and jabs instead of sticking to the crucial information. Sure it's freedom of speech but just because you have the freedom to do it doesn't mean you can't go about doing something with out being rude and disrespectful to others.

The Argo's are awesome, and us fans of the Argo's are the most passionate in the world, problem is there simply is not enough of us.
That's why I personally feel this is a good place to start with the passionate hardcore fan base here on the message board. If we can get more and more people out to meet ups, slowly over time maybe things will snowball and we can build up the community again.

The thing is that The Argos have tons of fans but they watch games on tv. The issue is getting them to get off the couch and down to the dome. I have a friend who is very high up with one of the huge Canadian companies who do polls. He sent me an e-mail last year about a CFL poll of the most followed CFL team. The Toronto Argonauts topped the list. I asked him if I could post the info but he said that I shouldn't. He's one of our Grey Cup buddies from another province. Perhaps the CFL hired them to do the poll. But just because we are the most followed team does not mean we have the best fans. We need more asses in the seats.

I actually like wearing my Argo gear. I guess as a female it's a conversation starter. Especially in the elevator at work. I work on Bay St. it's fun to see the suits all confused when they see my Argo jacket. Then they ask if I'm a fan...etc.

I wondered where those comment were coming from SnowRogue. Seemed like right out of left field. I like your ideas. They don't need a one year one off type marketing gimic. They need a great marketing plan for the long haul. I've often said that they play in the business capital of Canada. I'm sure they could work with a KILLER marketing firm. They need fans to want to get off the couch, trip down to the dome and enjoy. It might help if people stop bashing the actual facility. I can see how the security nazis piss people off but the dome is a nice comfortable place to watch a game. I miss hitting a restaurant before games and badalis after.

David Braley is trying the Water Boys concept from B.C. in Toronto so let's see how that works over the long-term. From what I have read, they are making some nice strides with that.

Your last comment reminds me of Steve Simmons' column in today's Sun: http://www.lfpress.com/sports/columnists/steve_simmons/2012/03/13/19498531.html

BTW, I have always been under the impression that the TV ratings in southern Ontario are fairly good contrary to what Simmons says here.
