A lot of guys on this list that I'd love to see in double blue.

I posted this in the Preparing for 2016 thread but might be better in this one.

The official FA list is out. Here is ours along with my list of priorities for re-signing:

ADJEI, Natey*
AGNEW, Vincent
ALIX, Anthony*
CUMMINGS, Euclid yes
FOLEY, Ricky*
GABRIEL, Jermaine* yes
GILLANDERS, Brendan* yes
GREEN, Isaiah
GREENWOOD, Cory* yes
HARRIS, Trevor yes
Jones, GREGORY yes
KEEPING, Jeff
KING, Jarriel
LAING, Cleyon* yes
MILES, Thomas* yes
MITCHELL, Scott*
OKPALAUGO, Tristan yes
OWENS, Chad
PALARDY, Justin*
RAY, Ricky yes
ROBINSON, Zander* yes
SMITH, Wayne*
STALA, Dave*
STEELE, Curtis
UNDERWOOD, Brandon
VEGA, Jason
WATERS, Swayze yes
WHITAKER, Brandon yes

Some of these guys are going to have multiple options so I hope Kilmer/Bell are willing to give JB a fatter wallet. Interesting that Kackert is not a FA.

Agreed. IMO the most overrated player in the CFL.

I think we need to bring Keeping back. Having the option to play Van Roten at C is nice, but I don't think that should be plan A.

It'll be interesting how many players actually hit the market. I'm not sure how much Owens, Foley and Keeping have left but I think all 3 can return but at a discount. I'm not sure other teams will even offer anything more than the Argos, if the Argos are even interested in retaining these 3.

Ex- CFL linebacker Brian Peters led the NFL in special teams tackles this season; he was a pretty good but nothing that spectacular player in the CFL IMO.

All sorts of CFL players could make the NFL if they get on the right team in need at the right time.

Believe I read on Lionbackers that Norman was not really that injured all of last year and some were wondering why he was out of their plans ?

IF he is not injury damaged - he could still be a CFL starter at centre or guard.

IMO, Brackenridge is a great ST player and not much else. He is a liability when covering in the secondary, and you can't blitz him on every down. He just isn't an every down player on D.

I'd have to disagree a bit there AV; Brackenridge is a good hitter and tackler, but that's if he is playing close to the line as a LB; as a safety he is too hit & miss in coverage and whiffs on some tackles going for big kill shots. Not saying he could replace some of the better OLBs in the league, but maybe somebody will give him a shot, and he at least has CFL experience to be able to go in and play OLB or safety for a team that needs versatile depth, plus like you say he can play STs; he is very doubtful to get the money he got before though IMO.

I truly believe his hi-light real of big hits masks his overall weakness on the field. As a LB, he's too small to play weak side, and his coverage skills are too weak to play strong side. You would need to get plenty of the over the top help from a safety if he's playing LB, leaving the deep middle vulnerable. Great at timing the blitz, but not a great defensive player. I think he kind of jumped the shark when the RedBlacks lineman caught a pass in 2014 and ran over him.

If possible I would like to see them sign Medlock and Hajrullahu. Don't like dressing only 1 kicker, and we've seen the Argos scramble and need to use Staala already. Medlock is the best FG kicker in the league, while Hajrullahu is very good at putting (with the ability to be a good FG kicker as well).

I thought I read somewhere that he was planning to live in the area permanently, along with Chad Owens when he made the move last year. But I may be wrong.

I'm not sure I want a pay top dollar for a K/P but if Medlock can do both than it's a plus. Much better than having 4 kickers on the roster. We need to move on from Palardy and Alix but not against bringing Waters back.

Bourke would be a huge signing for any team; although, I think he stays in Montreal. I'm surprised Lawless thinks the Lions may be interested in Messam; Wally stated not too long ago that they would rather go with 2 Internationals, but he may have just comparing Harris' ask to what they could get with internationals.

To what Harris is going to make, you could probably sign 3 international RBs, no doubt. But finding a back as good as Harris, that is going to be a challenge.

IMO Bulcke is one of the hidden gems of this year's crop, if healthy. He could be had for a lot less than Laurent and would probably be capable of starting for us. Ticats would be scrambling a bit if they lost both Bulcke and Laurent. They have lots of other NAT DTs but it's mostly guys with potential who aren't really proven yet.

I have been lobbying for Bulcke to become an Argo for some time. Reports indicate he is finally healthy, he would be a sound signing but would not break the bank like Laurent.

Medlock doing both jobs? - while he is a very accurate place kicker, he is about the worst punter in the CFL.

However - IMO - kicking (both place kicking & punting) is so important in the CFL, I would pay big bucks to a guy who is great at one of the jobs even; it's very rare for a dual kicker to continue to be top notch at both jobs - like Watters was 2 seasons back; I hope Swayze could be re-signed and bounce back to the superb form he showed awhile back, but if not I would gladly sign Medlock - as place kicker only though and find a real punter.

In signing Chris Rainey before free agency occurs, BC has improved its return game considerably over what it hard at the start of last season. After signing with BC in August, he gained 761 yards on kick returns for a 28.2 yard average and 593 yards with a 12.6 yard average in half a season (9 games).

Interesting questions include:

Does Montreal pass on 33-year-old Canadian tackle Josh Bourke and use his reported $225,000 salary to chase Laurent?
Does receiver Shamawd Chambers, the top Canadian in Edmonton's Grey Cup win last November, re-sign with the Eskimos, or does the Markham, Ont., native return to southern Ontario with either Toronto or Hamilton?
Which of its 30-plus free agents, including American kicker Justin Medlock and Canadian defensive linemen Laurent, Brian Bulcke, Michael Atkinson and Hasan Hazime, will Hamilton re-sign?
Will Toronto re-sign kicker Swayze Waters, who battled injuries last year, or pursue Medlock, a former Argo?
After being active in free agency last year, which free agents, including Capicciotti, veteran defensive tackle Keith Shologan and defensive back Jovon Johnson, can Ottawa GM Marcel Desjardins re-sign?
Will quarterback Trevor Harris remain in Toronto and compete with veteran Ricky Ray for the starting job or leave?
How many of Edmonton's free agents will follow former head coach Chris Jones, now Saskatchewan's head coach/GM?

Five key players to watch in CFL free agency when it opens Tuesday

Andrew Harris, Canadian running back, B.C. Lions: The 28-year-old Harris seems set to move on after seven seasons in B.C., and plenty of teams should be interested. With Jon Cornish's retirement (https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/cfl-55-yard-line/jon-cornish-retiring-at-31-should-be-another-cfl-concussion-wake-up-call-201104913.html), Harris looks like the best Canadian running back out there. ...
Ted Laurent, Canadian defensive tackle, Hamilton Tiger-Cats: Laurent has become one of the most consistently-effective defensive tackles out there, earning league all-star nods in both 2014 and 2015, and that's before you consider his passport. With it, he's a true ratio-buster who can let you play Americans elsewhere. Laurent's three sacks in 2015 were a step down from the nine he had in 2014, but he still filled gaps, stopped the run and generated plenty of pressure, and he also had an interception. At just 28, he should have plenty of good years left. ...
Justin Capicciotti, Canadian defensive end, Ottawa Redblacks: Capicciotti is another Canadian excelling at a traditionally-American position, which makes him worth his weight in gold. He's a great pass-rusher, notching 23 sacks over the last two years. He had 12 sacks and a forced fumble last season, and is just 26.
Cleyon Laing, Canadian defensive tackle, Toronto Argonauts: Laing is one of the league's most feared defensive linemen, and he had a fantastic 2015 with eight sacks and two forced fumbles. He's also only 25, which adds further excitement; he may be just hitting his peak.
Josh Bourke, Canadian left tackle, Montreal Alouettes: Bourke has long been one of the CFL's best offensive linemen, with seven East Division all-star nods and two selections as the division's top offensive lineman. He's one of the few Canadians who has proven to be able to consistently protect the quarterback's blind side and do so at an extremely high level. The 33-year-old Bourke is older than everyone else on this list, but many offensive linemen have performed well into their late 30s, and Bourke's combination of skill and passport (combined with an overall group of free-agent linemen that doesn't stand out as much as it often has) may make him in high demand.

Kirk Penton discusses the free agents the Bombers might try to sign.

A look at some of the players the Bombers will or should pursue when free agency opens on Tuesday at 11 a.m.:
RB Andrew Harris, B.C. – The soon-to-be 29-year-old Winnipeg native is all set for a homecoming. He produced the second 1,000-yard campaign of his career last season, and he wants to return home to be near his daughter. He's a ratio breaker, and he's better than what the Bombers have had at the tailback position in recent years. Should be a slam dunk.
K/P Justin Medlock, Hamilton – It looks like the Tiger-Cats are letting one of the CFL's most proficient field goal kickers get to free agency, and you can bet the Bombers will give him a call. Medlock has made 87.5% of his field goal kicks over five seasons.
K/P Swayze Waters, Toronto – If Medlock doesn't work out, Waters wouldn't be a terrible second choice. Despite injury woes last season, he told The Sun two weeks ago in Mobile, Ala., that he hired a nutritionist and personal trainer to get into tip-top shape. He was the CFL's special teams player of the year in 2014.
DB/LB Keon Raymond, Calgary – There have been rumours for more than a month that the Bombers are going to go after the versatile 33-year-old. He has recorded nine interceptions over the last two seasons and has 24 in eight years with the Stamps.
DT Ted Laurent, Hamilton – If the big man makes it to free agency, the Bombers owe to their fans to make the call. He's going to cost a ton of money, but he is a stud on the defensive line and he's Canadian. He's the cream of the free agent crop.

Lochard was a pretty good RB with Laval in CIS ball; he is viewed just as a special teamer / 3rd string RB or fullback in the CFL - didn't play any offence with good ole Wally, and would make the Bummers as a ST guy / back-up RB too.

Not when mediocre import players keep getting handed playing time - game after game and sometimes season after season - and they are terrible, and Canadians on the same roster get next to zero chance to play at the position. Grant is a classic CFL case of this.

60K is barely above CFL minimum; and I'll bet the only players in the league who make that are new raw rookie imports and young NIs - new draft picks or guys who have just been back-ups or special teamers.

Veteran import players who are viewed as starters = doubtful they sign for anything close to CFL minimum, just like I highly doubt CFL teams attract ex-NFL roster guys with minimum wage - maybe the odd time though.

Speculation / gossip/ guessing / rumours - gotta love the fun CFL $alary talk. Not that I care that much, but IMO there are some real fairy tale, cliched notions about CFL salaries.

Getting back to Bacan'tcatch Grant - we'll see if he makes the Stamps - who lost Rogers to the NFL plus have Fuller as a FA; but if Grant makes their team, what happened to the great scouting by Huff and crew - thought they could find import talent at a dime a dozen pace?; and if that stiff Grant gets playing time while impressive young NI receiver talent like Durant & Charbonneau-Campeau sit on the bench = really sad, but CFL typical, IMO.

And he wins wherever he goes. Saskatchewan will be much improved and compete right away.

Yeah - he did win as a rookie HC (on a season where the seas sorted parted / perfect storm type conditions in the league = Ticats lost Collaros; Stumps were decimated with injuries, Argos folded like a cheap suitcase late in the year; got to play a young Ottawa team in the GC and barely beat them).

Looking forward to see how Jones does in a rebuild job with the Riders where he has total say (GM & HC); if they are sub-500 will it be OK to say he ain't that great of a "winner" after all?

R.J

Proven winner HC to me is winning multiple GC, multiple first place finishes, multiple years in a row in the play-offs = things like that. Being on the staff of a CFL play-off team - in an 8 or 9 team league - more than once = something I guess.

Cory Chamblin, Ned Flanders (Higgins), the Garden Gnome (Maciocia) and Millanovich have all won GCs as a HC.

Scooter McCray

When he was here in 2012 he ran the US camps and found talent that helped the Argos win the GC. He coached that talent on the defensive side of the ball into a dominant force by the second half of the year. He has done this wherever he has been. He is driven and tireless coach. I don't expect him to win a GC in 2016 but I bet he will be competing for one by the time riders have their new stadium.

Wally's coaching record isn't by accident. He knows what he's doing.

The B.C. Lions gave him that opportunity Wednesday, signing him to a one-year deal worth about $75,000, a $10,000 bump up from what he made last season with the RedBlacks.

Johnson had been looking to double his salary from last year, according to one article, but didn't end up with anything close to that.

A superior season, without injury, and he'll probably command such an amount.

A bit surprised; I've continually heard that Price has little interested in being in the CFl - either his tune changed or he likes making some $$$ playing football or riding the pine.

I really wanted the Argos to go after Price. too bad.

Is this the end of Greg McGhee? I would be interested in giving him a TC look if the Lions cut him.

The Bombers have signed Jerrel Jernigan.

Jernigan (5-8, 189, Troy, June 14, 1989 in Eufaula, AL) joins the Blue Bombers after four seasons with the New York Giants. Jernigan was originally selected in the third round, 83rd overall by New York in 2011, and appeared in 34 games over four seasons. During that time, he caught 38 receptions for 391 yards and two touchdowns. Jernigan won the Super Bowl with the Giants in 2011, playing in the game as the Giants’ primary kick returner, and was a teammate of current Bomber defensive back Bruce Johnson in New York.
Jernigan played collegiate football at Troy, seeing action in 50 games with 37 starts. He hauled in a school record 262 receptions for 3,128 yards and 18 touchdowns. Jernigan amassed a school and Sun Belt Conference record 5,972 all-purpose yards and totaled 25 touchdowns on 490 touches through his tenure at Troy.

The Ticats have extended Peter Dyakowski through 2017.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced Wednesday that the team has signed National Offensive Lineman Peter Dyakowski to a contract extension through the 2017 CFL season.“Peter is a team leader, our longest serving player, and a vital member of our organization both on and off the field,” said Tiger-Cats Vice President of Football Operations and Head Coach Kent Austin.
Dyakowski, who will enter his 10th season with the Tiger-Cats in 2016, has appeared in 132 career CFL regular season games.
He has also seen seven playoff games, including two Grey Cup appearances in 2013 and 2014.
The offensive lineman was an Eastern Division All-Star in 2012 and the Tiger-Cats Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman in 2011.

With Mike Reilly signing an extension through 2018 and Bo Levi Mitchell already extended to 2018, it's possible both could be on the free agent market in 2019 at the same time, making for some interesting bidding.

I think that is when the current CBA expires, so their agents are probably expecting a bigger big pay day with the new deal. I think we'll be seeing a lot of top flight players not extending past 2018 until the new deal is done.

That makes sense, but I imagine the number of players who will be offered contracts extending beyond 2018 will be in the single digits until after the 2017 season. A couple of QBs like collaros and a few NAT o-linemen is probably about it. Everyone else gets one-year deals whether they like it or not.

True enough I suppose, but Montreal released him and by all reports he was the most inconsistent/worst QB at Riders mini camp.

I just think it's hilarious that Lefevour going to the NFL makes him amazing all of a sudden to some. By this logic that means Ray, Burris, Reilly and Collaros all suck because they're not there.
