Interesting that another team would have used a 2nd round pick on Sackey. Good to hear that the League was concerned with Justin Dunk tweeting out the picks before Orrdige announced them.

“We grade players how they fit for us,” Barker said. “There’s players that were drafted in the first round that we had (ranked) lower than that. Just because for us were lower fits, that doesn’t mean they aren’t fits for the team that took them.”
Found this bit curious as well.

The Argos signed free-agent Canadian Malcolm Williams, a native of B.C., and were impressed at how the towering athletic receiver looked at the team’s mini-camp.

On a side note - happy to see the Star using O'Leary to write about the Argonauts. I was a bit concerned that the Argonauts/CFL wouldn't be covered.

I agree. TSN should be doing a much better job with the Draft and CFL as a whole.

I know one could easily stay off Twitter and wouldn't be spoiled by Dunk's tweets but it still seemed a bit strange to me. And I know some have no problem with what Dunk did but still seems like a bit of a jerk move by Sportsnet.

Yeah, I agree. From here on, I will refer to him as Dink. His face is also annoying. Surprised he hasn't been hired by Austin in Hamilton. A couple of jerk faces.

I guess the jerk store is running out of them then.

I call bs on the story that other CFL teams were so interested in Sackey that they would have picked him soon after the Argos did (we'll never know unless some CFL comes out and states it in plain English - rather than going by a kiddy text message). Why did he not get an invitation to the CFL Combine or even one of the regional ones? Why wasn't he called to play in the CIS East-West game if he is such an amazing athlete ?

I hope his hip movement ability and "athleticism" pan-out down the road so he becomes a starting Argo O-lineman. Some "projects" who did little in college ball do pan-out to become good pro players. Very limited list though - minuscule number compared to the number of top notch, proven, all-star/top-stat college ball players who have made good pros. Way to check? - compile a list of the top 50 or so Canadian players in the CFL over the past few years, and tell me how many were average or back-ups or little recognition college ball players or "athletes" who barely played any college ball; then tell me how many on the list were college ball all-stars (conference or national), amongst college ball stat leaders, award winners, selected to play in all-star games, played numerous times deep in the play-offs, won championships, etc.

*** Edit - I stand corrected - Sackey was at the Toronto regional Combine, but not selected from there to go on to the CFL main Combine; his test # at the regional include 21 bench reps (not bad, but nothing special for a lineman) and other #s don't seem anything special either.

Those guys are less likely to get all-star team and award votes, especially if they don't play a skill-position.

OK then, fair enough - Take my test challenge please - use just O-lineman if you wish or pick players regardless of position - take 25 or 50 top NI CFL players/starters and break them down into the 2 categories I indicated; and then tell me how many on each list.

Good one; I prefer Dustin Junk (can't take credit though - think i read it on riderfans.) Guy comes across as a goof and CFL shill/sheep "reporter".

People complain about Canadians putting down the CFL and preferring the NFL and then they make cracks about Canadian company BlackBerry.

Do your own work if you want a detailed breakdown.

Still doesn't mean players from non-elite programs can't be great pro prospects.

Sensitive much ?

Not at all. However I am tired of Canadians running down anything Canadian and assuming that if it's Canadian it's inferior.

What would Barker's motivation be to lie about this? It makes complete sense that they would use an earlier pick on Sackey if they were fairly sure that another team would use an early pick on him. The Argos, like all other CFL teams, do mock drafts ahead of time and they also have good contacts both around the CFL and in the CIS.

Who said he lied? The text came after they picked Sackey and seemed like more or a joke or jab, but if you want to take it as some big confirmation that other CFL teams were right there to pick Sackey too and also that it shows what a genius Barker is for stealing such an amazing prospect, then have at 'er Ravi.

The point I would make again - the Argos used a 2nd round pick to take a not highly rated prospect with little on his college ball resume when they could have instead drafted highly rated talent like kicker Van Glyswick, RB Timmis or receiver Brescacin to name a few; and I'd also bet any amount of money, that there was no way in hell some other team was about to pick Sackey that round or next or 4th round (no way to prove this unless another CFL teams comes out and says they would have) = Barker could still have got Saceky in a later round and also could have had a talent like Van Glyswick to compete in TC. You can believe other wise - to each his own.

I'm not a Moderator, but IMO we should try and keep the personal remarks about the media people down and be thankful they are giving us some CFL news. Doesn't mean we have to agree with everything they say, just do it with a little respect.

But without a quote as you have done above, it is only an assumption, and leaves the post as some random rant about iPhones.
